Day 3. 20 minutes and 46 seconds of the old lady shuffle.

Weather: 60 °F, 36% humidity, wind 9 S.

I got out and went really slowly like I was supposed to, though I did speed up slightly over the course of the run. McMillan's instructions say to run on flat terrain. That's not really possible for me, but I did try to take a less hilly route than usual. I went 46 seconds longer than I was supposed to because I was too far from home when the 20 minutes were up. I kept running until I got to the bottom of my hill sprint hill, then walked up that hill and home. I'm still feeling tight, particularly in my left hamstring. That's the only muscle that's really hurting at this point. It was always a little tight for the weeks before the marathon.

When I got to work yesterday one of my coworkers had decorated my office with streamers and confetti and congratulations signs. Some of my coworkers are more excited about what I've done than my family is.

I'm starting to think fairly seriously about the American Discovery Trail marathon, which runs from Palmer Lake to Colorado Springs and is on Labor Day. It's a downhill course mostly on packed dirt trail and has slightly more overall elevation drop than Ogden (and is at a higher elevation overall). I was thinking I'd like to do a fall marathon and this one would be the least stress and cost to me and my family since it's close to home. My only hesitation about it is that it's a little sooner than I would like it to be. If I take 4 weeks to recover from Ogden, I'll have 12 weeks left after that to prepare for that marathon, one of which I'll be spending on a cruise ship. I guess I can run laps around the track on the ship.

I think you should do it.

If you stay up on your training 12 weeks should be plenty for you to prepare. You are already in marathon shape, maintaining that shouldn't be as difficult as getting there the first time.

From Tracy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 09:54:49 from 209.175.177.37

I just need to reiterate--you are my hero.

I'm glad to see you're already thinking of the future. Don't forget when you're deciding that you will have a better base at the start of those 12 weeks than you did before you started training earnestly for this marathon. And I'm sure you'll be itching to get back to training too!

How early in the training is your cruise? I'm jealous, by the way.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 10:21:40 from 71.229.164.25

The cruise is the 2nd of the 12 weeks.

I probably should do it. It'll actually be easier for me to train in the summer than other times because the kids and my husband are out of school. I don't have to be running kids to music and swimming lessons (my husband can do that) and I can do 2-a-days sometimes by running to and from work.

I've just got to come up with a 12-week training plan.

From Tracy on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 10:49:20 from 209.175.177.37

Sounds like you already made up your mind :)

Are you planning on running Boston next year?

From april27 on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:10:06 from 99.188.251.180

Since you have already ran a marathon I would say go for it. and the cruise is in the 2nd week of training you should still be okay...

From JD on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:23:29 from 64.65.159.206

You're fit enough, with a solid mileage base, you'll be fine for a marathon by Labor day is my guess.

Cool of your co-workers to celebrate your accomplishment with you.

My wife recently went on a cruise and she ran laps every day. There had been a track on one of the decks. Talk about an ocean view!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 11:34:34 from 198.241.217.15

Tracy, I'll probably run some marathon in the Spring next year. It may or may not be Boston. I'll just have to see how things go with myself and with some other people.

From Snoqualmie on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 12:35:16 from 67.171.56.164

Sounds good. 12 weeks isn't a bad training period. I think running on a cruise ship might be kind of fun; I'm sure you won't be alone and you'll have endless supplies of "fuel." Don't those buffets stay open all the time? lol

From Metcalf Running on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 15:44:09 from 71.219.133.242

Carolyn, running laps on a cruise ship has to beat the running you did on the indoor track for one of your training runs. I mean how many miles was that? Like 20 or something. All I remember was thinking you were crazy.

From Kelli on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 16:39:36 from 71.219.85.34

That sounds like a fun marathon to run. And way to go on running today, I have not dared you. Tomorrow will be the day.

You get to go on a cruise? I am jealous!!!

From Scott on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 17:42:21 from 71.212.221.189

Congratulations on your marathon. I'm from Colorado as well and don't see too many other Coloradans on here...

It looks like you did great! You should be proud of yourself...way to go!

Running laps on a cruise didn't work for me because everybody kept getting in the way. But I did get in some quality treadmill time. The line I was on had great treadmills and nobody used them but the staff (and me).

Do the marathon. This one will just be for fun and you'll love running in dirt. I predict a 3:35.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 20, 2009 at 09:58:02 from 71.229.164.25

Maybe I can avoid the crowds on the cruise ship if I get up early enough. Yeah right. Who am I kidding?

Actually, I went on a cruise on the same cruise line a couple of years ago and I remember being up in a lounge that had windows overlooking the track, and some teenagers in the lounge were watching a girl running the track and there was a boy down on the track who would chase for a little ways each time she came to the area where he was.

Of course, that was an Alaskan cruise, so it was kind of cool out on the deck most of the time. This one is a Caribbean cruise, so maybe there will be more people on the deck.
