45 mile bike ride, longest distance up till this point. It was windy when I left the door this morning. I thought it would be good training to push some of those hills in the wind, man was I right. I don't think I've ever been in wind that strong in my life. I was doing 12 1/2 minute miles for most of the ride, on a bike!!
The wind was so bad at some points that it knocked me over on the ground, twice!! I had to get off and walk at on point, because it was too dangerous to ride. When I was walking, the wind was blowing me across the road. I was hanging on to my bike with two hands and my bike was blowing like a kite in the wind above my head. It took all I had to hold on to it and to keep my footing.
The road narrows in some places where the cliffs/walls are on both sides of the road. At these points, the wind would pick up quarter sized rocks and blast them through the wind tunnels at what seemed 100 miles per hour. The rocks cut my arms and legs, leaving them etched and looking pretty rough. I said a little humble prayer at one point that I would make it home ok.
On the way back I had the wind on my back. I had to stay on the brakes most of the way, to keep from going too fast and out of control.
Needless to say a pretty crazy bike ride. I'm glad to be alive and glad to have done the ride. I hope I don't experience wind like that again. |
