Short-Term Running Goals: 3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!
Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)
Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013 Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!
Long-Term Running Goals: I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?). You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit? That is what I would like! Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

A naughty 60 mins of ellipticalling. So, weirdest thing. Last night, in the middle of the night, I woke up with the most horrific back (flank) pain. I thought, "I have run 85 mpw and have never hurt like this before, but I hurt my back from CLEANING house????". So I roll every which way in bed trying to get rid of the never-ending pain. I got up, walked around, laid back down, ...., just waves and waves of pain. So then I lay there hyperventilating and thinking, "Oh my, I might have to go to the ER, this might be some sort of kidney pain and it just won't let up". Dean woke up and asked me if I was ok, and I told him what was going on and then when he asked if we needed to go to the ER, I said, "I don't think so" ... After about 1/2 hour more it sort of abated -- I could still feel it, but the waves were getting a little less nauseating. I can feel it this morning, and still can't tell if it is muscular or deeper. I can definitely feel something when I take a deep breath, but I don't have a fever or any other pain, so I am right now, assuming (hoping) it is just something going on with my back. The only other thing it could be, without any other signs of infection/inflammation, would be a kidney stone ... and so far, I have not passed one. I am dragging today because of lack of sleep, and pain, so I can't tell if I feel sick or just drained. I didn't feel particularly "good" on the elliptical, but when does one anyway? Anyway ... it was weird, and it kind of pissed me off. Back to work. I hope you are all enjoying your Sunday!!

| another day, another hour + wu/cd *in* the gym. Which is probably ok, since it still is 100F degrees here!! This is way outside of normal for us this time of year, it should be in the 80s now! | another hour another ...yawwwwn ... hour. Difficult to get up, Dean got home from work at midnight (grant deadline), poor guy.
Thursday -- pool running (I hope my new mp3 player gets here by then). My aircast should be here today ...I am hoping by wearing it when I am walking, and ellipticalling, I might speed this healing up! Back/kidney is better, still can feel it, but not really painful, just weird. I guess I just can't clean my house, for health reasons. Do you think insurance will pay for a house cleaner? One hour on the elliptical. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I watched "Hell's Kitchen" (cooking "reality" show). An hour of my life I will never get back. I hope I never have to see that again. (I don't have a choice on what is on the TV).

A little over an hour of gloriously boring deep water running. I had spent some money (and some time downloading a few pretty cool "radio mystery shows" - kind of like Philip Marlow done on the radio) on a "waterproof" MP3 player. Well, the dratted thing died after 5 mins. I am sending it back and demanding my money back, but it goes in the "pile of things to get sent back" (like walking cast-boot, extra aircast - because they told me they did not have one, yet sent me one 5 days later after I already had obtained one, and 2 swimsuits that did not fit). Just to add insult to injury (pun intended), not only can't I run, but I am paying a lot for the privilege. Anyway ... I did finish a whole hour and broke it up with doing 2 min hard, 2 min easy, 3 min hard, 2 min easy, 4 min hard, 2 min easy .... etc. I don't think I killed too many brain cells in the process, just my spirit ;-). I hope you are all training well, recovering well, tapering well, and just plain ole, being awesomely well!!!

1 hour deep water areobics + 30 mins water "sprinting" both with and without the floatation belt. I have good news and bad news ... good news: I CAN RUN!!! bad news: It is still going to hurt!!! The the MRI came back negative for "stress fracture" ... but unfortunately, I have extremely severe (per radiologist) "medial tibial stress syndrome" (e.g., shin split). Mine is not only severe in terms of "grade" but also because it covers the entire medial aspect of my tibia (from ankle to knee). It is "correctable". However, it was not "caused" by "too-much-too-soon" or other training mistakes and since the other tibia is also showing the beginning signs of the same problem (though it never hurt) I need orthotics. This is not a problem, I will be fit for them next week (though I am not sure I will be able to wear my favorite shoes (Nike Free TRs) for a while. What is a larger issue (to me anyway). Is that it is unclear how long it will be until I don't run with pain ... John thinks that the orthotics will help with the pain. While it is possible that I *could* be ready for Houston (since Dean, my coach and John think it will only take me ~ 3 weeks to get back into shape) - I am not sure that I will be where I would want to be for a marathon, so I am not sure if I will 1) defer my marathon entry to next year or, 2) run the half -- both are options. Right now, I am leaning towards deferring my entry to next year --- but who knows, if I can get right up to where I was (due to my horribly boring but consistent cross-training activities and the fact that I have gained *0* weight) ... I might reconsider in a month or so. But, I will start adding some runs tomorrow! Yippeee!!!! I hope all of you getting ready for races this weekend have wonderful runs!! | A little over 30 mins. No pain in my leg (though I would not call this run "pain free" 3 weeks off is a looooong time)!! YIPPEEE. I can't wait to see the results from St. George, I know it was hot, I hope not too hot.
