Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

A naughty 60 mins of ellipticalling.

So, weirdest thing.  Last night, in the middle of the night, I woke up with the most horrific back (flank) pain.  I thought, "I have run 85 mpw and have never hurt like this before, but I hurt my back from CLEANING house????".  So I roll every which way in bed trying to get rid of the never-ending pain.  I got up, walked around, laid back down, ...., just waves and waves of pain.  So then I lay there hyperventilating and  thinking, "Oh my, I might have to go to the ER, this might be some sort of kidney pain and it just won't let up".  Dean woke up and asked me if I was ok, and I told him what was going on and then when he asked if we needed to go to the ER, I said, "I don't think so" ... After about 1/2 hour more it sort of abated -- I could still feel it, but the waves were getting a little less nauseating.  I can feel it this morning, and still can't tell if it is muscular or deeper.  I can definitely feel something when I take a deep breath, but I don't have a fever or any other pain, so I am right now, assuming (hoping) it is just something going on with my back.  The only other thing it could be, without any other signs of infection/inflammation, would be a kidney stone ... and so far, I have not passed one.  I am dragging today because of lack of sleep, and pain, so I can't tell if I feel sick or just drained.  I didn't feel particularly "good" on the elliptical, but when does one anyway?

Anyway ... it was weird, and it kind of pissed me off.

Back to work.

I hope you are all enjoying your Sunday!!

That sounds horrible. We tend to err on the side of going to the ER. Problem is you don't know what it is if its undiagnosed. I hope tonight you can get some sleep.

Just a thought, were you on the elliptical before or after the cleaning? Maybe if you are a bit tense on the elliptical it could cause such a problem?

When I have used it in the past I tend to not use the big sticking out arm things, but use just the small ones and then most of the work is done by my legs rather than my arms.

Hi Chris, I don't use the arm things, I try to make my arms feel like when I am running. I think the arm things keep your legs from working as hard because your arms do the work ... I am now thinking that I just haven't worked my "housecleaning" muscles enough and somehow that involves a lot of my back. We'll see how today goes.

Hope you are felling better Bonnie! Hopefully it's nothing worse than muscle pains in the back (i.e., muscle pains can feel really painful in other areas of the body at times). Also, you are really a true runner not counting your elliptical miles as running miles (i.e., I count them, because if I did not, I might force myself to run on an injury). Best of luck getting over your back soreness!

Awful! Your body has been through a lot of change. For what it is worth, my body does not like the elliptical at all, it hurts me. Hope things get better as the day progresses.

What does cleaning house entail? Is your living room full of barbells that you have to move in order to dust?

From Bonnie on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 13:05:29 from 128.196.228.134

ha ha ha ha ... Mike, I love it. I don't know what would do it (which was why I was leaning towards something more sinister) -- Dean and I were laughing last night because I told him the main reason I did not go to the ER was because I didn't want to spend hours there only to have them sigh and say,"well, it is only muscle pain" -- and Dean said, "Mam, it appears you have strained your shower cleaning muscle".

Rossy, thank you for your kind post. I don't know about "true runner", but I am a "purist" I suppose ;)

Thanks Auntie, I am hoping it is just some freaky muscle thing, but it was truly more like "toothache" pain than muscle pain -- waves and waves of take-your-breath away pain. I actually think I pass a kidney stone ... although I haven't actually see one, I have heard they don't have to be big to cause a lot of discomfort.

Have a good day everyone!

Bon!! I said no cleaning!! You are feeling better now??? Did you pass it or you are unsure if it was muscle related?

Hope you are well now!

From Bonnie on Mon, Sep 27, 2010 at 19:38:54 from 128.196.228.134

I thought of you saying that when I first felt it Dan!! lol. I have not passed anything, but am feeling more sure that it is not muscle related ... don't worry, I will let you know how things "come out" ;-)

From Nan on Tue, Sep 28, 2010 at 16:37:20 from 24.8.144.22

Ouch!!! I passed a couple of tiny kidney stones once when I was pregnant and oh yes, it hurt in my lower back, abdomen, and made me very nauseated. I actually couldn't hold anything down for half the day and ended up having to go in to the clinic for some saline and morphine to rehydrate and enable me to get some sleep. Its a wicked little chore passing stones. I hope you are feeling better!

Then again, I've also had back muscle spasms as horrific as you described. So I wouldn't be surprised if it was that either.
