10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

I have good news and bad news ... good news:  I CAN RUN!!!  bad news: It is still going to hurt!!!

The the MRI came back negative for "stress fracture" ... but unfortunately, I have extremely severe (per radiologist) "medial tibial stress syndrome" (e.g., shin split).  Mine is not only severe in terms of "grade" but also because it covers the entire medial aspect of my tibia (from ankle to knee).   It is "correctable".  However, it was not "caused" by "too-much-too-soon" or other training mistakes and since the other tibia is also showing the beginning signs of the same problem (though it never hurt) I need orthotics.  This is not a problem, I will be fit for them next week (though I am not sure I will be able to wear my favorite shoes (Nike Free TRs) for a while.  What is a larger issue (to me anyway).  Is that it is unclear how long it will be until I don't run with pain ... John thinks that the orthotics will help with the pain.  While it is possible that I *could* be ready for Houston (since Dean, my coach and John think it will only take me ~ 3 weeks to get back into shape) - I am not sure that I will be where I would want to be for a marathon, so I am not sure if I will 1) defer my marathon entry to next year or, 2) run the half -- both are options.  Right now, I am leaning towards deferring my entry to next year --- but who knows, if I can get right up to where I was (due to my horribly boring but consistent cross-training activities and the fact that I have gained *0* weight) ... I might reconsider in a month or so.  But, I will start adding some runs tomorrow!  Yippeee!!!!

I hope all of you getting ready for races this weekend have wonderful runs!!  And, those of you training for races, have excellent training runs.  And, enjoy your weekend everyone!

well Bon, I do like the good news... and prayed you would be able to run soon... guess I need to add that 'pain free' huh??

Overall though, not having the stress fracture is good news :)

Well that is good news enough! You have been a very good cross trainer and now comes the payoff!

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 00:34:22 from 67.41.176.32

great news Bonnie. your situation sounds just like what happened to me in March 2009 except it was the posterior tibial tendon shin splint all the way down the inside left leg (and probably a stress fracture though i couldn't get an MRI because of my CI in my head). I still have lingering periodic problems, but fortunately I can't ever get an MRI, so I just figure ignorance is bliss... anyway, you might want to try calf supports and compression socks, they have really helped me. I wear the mcdavid neoprene calf supports for all my training runs and the lighter made for running CEP calf compression sleeves in races. makes a big difference for me.

That is good news!

I don't suppose you know anyone with an alter-g treadmill that you could use? I suppose you could combine cross training and running though

Can you do any exercises to improve the situation eg working on balance or is that not the cause?

That's great Bonnie. Won't rest help the shin splints heal, though? How about sticking to pool running for two weeks? What'd John say about heal time?

From Bonnie on Sat, Oct 02, 2010 at 12:58:16 from 64.119.33.134

Thank you!! I am very excited. 30 mins today, no ankle pain, just a little sore now.

Scott - thank you for the suggestion, I am going to order some, and I think you are right, they will help a lot!

Chris, good question - I will talk to John about it, I am pretty sure he thinks orthotics are the answer, but I would really like to "fix" the problem rather than just avoid the issues.

Michelle, I am cleared for running ... I will likely just start ramping up and see how it goes. Cross-train and run until I am back up to my usual mileage (3-4 weeks most likely).

That's great news Bonnie! You have cross-trained quite earnestly so I bet your fitness level has suffered very little. I do hope that the orthotics are the "magic" answer. Is it something about your gait and pronation causing the problem and thus the orthotics? I don't have any advice for you but am interested to see how you resolve the problem! As for me and injuries in general--the more I eat(mostly nutritious calories) the less I hurt. I just don't weigh and oblivion is bliss!

Good news! Shin splints - wow. I am sure your fitness level will bounce back very quickly; cross training is training, after all. I did much longer, and I did lose some fitness, mostly for the speed work. So happy that you can run again!
