PR's

5K: 21:26 (2005)

4 mile: 28:10 (2005)

10K: 43:33 (2010)

10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

1/2 marathon: 1:34:31 (2011)

marathon: 3:19:15 (2013)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

AM: 8 miles, 1:07:43.

PM: easy 4.

What to do, what to do?  I feel like I am getting sick.  I am not sick yet, but I am super tired and my chest feels tight.  I am supposed to do 20 with 8 miles at MP tomorrow.  I am not sure if I should temp fate or not ... I am going to DC on Wednesday.  I could probably get 20 in on Thursday before my meeting, unless I get sick.  I have been taking vit C and zinc for about 4 days now -- noooooo, I can't get sick.  I am pretty sure sick would be worse than missing a run, though I would prefer to do neither.  I AM running this marathon, even if I have to run it with pneumonia.  seriously.

my (humble, perhaps even hypocritical) suggestion would be to take it easy. you've got some substantial mileage under your belt, so tempting fate by further weakening your immune system with a long run might not be the best idea.

that said, i've run more than a few colds off, and i think the key is whether a fever is developing or not. if you have a fever, run = bad. if not, the run might raise your body temp enough to kill the little bugs.

in any case, good luck...

thank you so much Nevels! Nice to hear from you. I have run through just about every illness, but man, this is just not good timing. I think I will be playing it by ear and seeing how I feel as the day/night/morning progresses. Maybe it is all in my head!!!

playing it by ear is definitely my standard m.o., especially when it comes to potential "runner's hypochondria"...

oh nooooo! i'm sorry.

you have a monster mileage base (YEARS of consistency), so if you do have to scratch some mileage, i think you will be just fine. whatever you end up doing tomorrow, just make sure the non-running parts are very restful (i.e. only get out of bed to run) ;)

safe/healthy travels next week. the taper should help you bounce back, and then you can glide on in to the woodlands feeling fresh and fast.

take care, bonnie.
