Married, we have one daughter so far. I ran for Alta high school and was trained by Rob Murphy, he is a great coach, one of the best there is. I also ran for Southern Utah University.

4x400m max effort after a 3 mile warm up. The first two were uphill, last two were downhill. I ran 60-61, 60-61, 57, 58. Since it wasn't on the track I didn't really have a goal for the time I should hit. I just won each one and tried to push it as hard as I could. I would go out easy for about 100m, and then boost ahead of everyone and try to maintain that speed all the way through, it was fun! I love max effort 400s, 400m workouts are my bread and butter. They're confidence building, fun, I feel faster afterwards, they make me faster. They're by far my favorite, sadly I can't just do 400m workouts. I think other track workouts can be fun sometimes, but I love any variation of 400m interval workout. From max effort to 1600m race pace to 5000 race pace. 1600m race pace is my favorite obviously. I'm feeling good going into state, only one challenge left to prove myself on before state, a gully time trial.

When is state?

If you are going to be doing the gully time trial, I would do it this week. If state is next week you will probably want to taper down next week.

No reason to squeeze in any hard workouts now.

Trust in the work you done up till now and begin tapering off. Do some workouts to keep sharp but not that will tear you down.

I remember when I was in high school, I had no real coach, so was pretty much self coached and knew nothing about training, and the week of the state track meet I did some of my hardest training of the season. I remember going into the state mile race so sore. I totally embarrassed myself. It was my worst race of the year.

So if you don't have the training behind you now, you won't be getting it in the next few days.

Just trust in what you have done up till now, and go into the state meet fresh.

Sorry I should have specified, my team is doing the time trial on Saturday and State is on Wednesday so there will be a good 4 days before I have to race. That would be really rough, I'm very grateful for my Coach! I am confident, I've worked hard this season and I think it will pay off at the state meet!

That's a tough workout. Enjoy the max effort-5k stuff when you're young; when you're an old man, you find marathon pace to be just right!
