Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

4:00 PM - Running inside on the treadmill for the first 3.5 or so in 32:00, followed by a really fast mile+ outside. Ran down to the turnaround in 4:28, and back in 4:11. Coming back was tough, uphill. Felt good. Did another lap inside again to round out at an even 5 miles. Legs were really sore the first two miles though from yesterday's Vibram run. Eclipsed my longest run in the Vibrams by close to 4 miles yesterday.

6:00 PM - Home sick today. Was up all last night with fever and chills. Pushing myself too hard, but as always, my MO is to try to run when I'm sick. I think it helps get the sickness out. Ran 5.05 miles on the treadmill in 46:00. Felt good afterwards, but really hurt during. Calf muscles pretty sore from long run last week.

6:15 PM - Today was a sucky day. If there is one thing I would suggest for next year it is to not schedule "hell days" for teachers. My Tuesdays and Thursdays since Thanksgiving have been 11:00-3:35, 3x 7th grade blocks (2 x 90 and a 1 x 60), followed by 1 hour of after school hell (I mean helP). Not to mention earlier in the day I have an advisory and a senior seminar. I'm friggin exhausted on Tuesday/Thursdays. If there is one thing that a charter school can do it's burn out first year teachers. I understand why turnover's so high. Doesn't help that my classes keep changing every trimester either. I feel like I finally start to know the kids and then I'm back to teaching something else. Oh well. Such is life. Goal is to not try as hard. I have no free time right now. We got rid of cable because all we do is work, come home, eat, work more, fall asleep for a couple hours and repeat. No time for married life either right now. Sucks major.

Ran at the track tonight. First time at Taconic since the snow melted. Gorgeous. Temperature was 53 degrees at start, 48 at the finish. Did a couple miles warming up, hit a nice hard mile (fastest since I think last June!), and then coasted in a couple more miles. Did a .50 mile cool down afterwards (4:00). Splits were:

  • Mile 1: 8:48
  • Mile 2: 8:16
  • Mile 3: 6:22!
  • Mile 4: 8:13
  • Mile 5: 7:29

10:00 AM - Chilly and brisk, about 34 degrees at the start. Wind advisory in effect, but not nearly as bad as yesterday! Emmy and I went to Taconic High School and brought all the fixings for a good run. Clif Bars, Luna Bars, plenty of water, towels, change of clothes, apples, bananas, etc. Emm hasn't really run in a month or so because of work and she has never run more than 9 miles. I set out to help her beat this and to make sure she felt good while doing it! We ran most of the way together, minus the couple bathroom breaks she took. Wind picked up during hours 3 and 4. I had originally planned an ambitious 6 hour jaunt, but it didn't happen. Splits were:

  • Mile 1: 12:21
  • Mile 2: 12:33
  • Mile 3: 14:53
  • Mile 4: 12:43
  • Mile 5: 15:24 (water stop and changed shirts)
  • Mile 6: 12:11
  • Mile 7: 13:41
  • Mile 8: 11:36
  • Mile 9: 11:43
  • Mile 10: 12:35
  • Mile 11: 11:11
  • Mile 12: 13:28
  • Mile 13: 11:06
  • Mile 14: 11:51
  • Mile 15: 11:51
  • Mile 16: 12:30
  • Mile 17: 10:21
  • Mile 18: 14:49
  • Mile 19: 12:38

Emm ended up walking with me towards the end. I felt good. A bit tired, but not really screaming in pain. My calves were sore from the vibram runs earlier in the week. Emm ended up not only becoming a half marathoner today for the first time, but also ran about 16 miles! I am so proud of her!
