Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

Day #116: 4 miles on the treadmill before headed off to County Championships from 11am to 8pm. Long day. I ran the fastest I've ever run since 2007 in a 4 mile tempo and it felt remarkably easy! Total time was 27:59, and I ran negative splits the whole way. 7:26, 7:02, 6:53, 6:37. Going to run tonight and try to log some more miles and a longish run tomorrow. So proud of my kids. So many set personal records. So many became heroes. So many realized the impossible just became possible! They're awesome!

#119: 6 miles total; 4 miles with the cross country team doing a fartlek with 8 striders at the end. Then 2 miles later with Emm before watching a little election results pour in. Third presidential election I voted in, but the state race was more important in my mind. The people holding Elizabeth Warren placards thanked me for my vote. They must have seen my liberal propaganda hippie mobile pull in. Felt alright. Right ankle sore and don't know why. Guess that means I should probably just bag the 120 day challenge, now eh Jason Fitzgerald?

Day #120: 4 miles total in 34:11; Got through the day at work and came home, knowing that I was going to complete something if it killed me. I must have rolled my ankle without knowing it in practice on Monday and my ankle was incredibly sore the last two days, but nothing was going to stop me from completing my goal of running 120 days in a row. I've learned a lot during my 120 days of movement. I've learned that I can persevere if I set my mind to it. I've learned I can somewhat balance work and personal life together and that making myself run a mile even on the really bad days make those bad days not so bad. I think running is a truly amazing thing, a great passion of mine, and something I want to pass on to others after I'm dead and buried. I want to help people infuse their lives with happiness, with forward movement. There were days that I told myself, "no way, no how" am I going to log that mile today. But then I forced myself to roll off the couch (sometimes at 10:30 or 11:00 at night), and made myself slug through a mile. I have run miles barefoot, in Vibram Five Fingers, in work shoes, in hiking boots, and in warm, comfy slippers. No mile was particularly more valuable than another. Rather, it was the whole of the activity, the pursuit of the goal of 4 months of continuous movement that has changed my outlook on the sport. Along the way I've logged over 632 miles, ran a personal best at the marathon distance without a set training plan, scaled the highest mountain in the state of Massachusetts 3 times within as many weeks. I have endured aches, pains, and sicknesses. But the bull-headed stubborn me fought through it, refusing to concede defeat. Have I come out lighter? Mildly. I am finally sitting under 220 pounds for the first time in two years. I feel like I have gained muscle and lost some fat, but still sitting at 219#. I have gained energy (on most days). It is really great to think about what the future holds. I want to inspire others to push themselves to do what they think is outside their reach. I want them to strive and work, and if they do not succeed the first time, revise and revamp their approach and give it another go. Life is too short to be filled with "I cants". We need to change the world one step at a time, whether it be a step up a mountain, down a hall, into a classroom, into a doctor's office. Make the change and the choice you are given each and every day to live life to the fullest. I hope to join some of you in your quests for personal greatness and I hope you will follow me. I am not done yet!

Day #121: 4 miles relaxed; 2 in the snow and fading sunlight with my cross country team teaching them about "surging", "hanging", and "cornering". They took it in stride and really did a bang up job. Now comes the time for them to rest up, hydrate, cargo load and visualize the race. I want them to walk away from this season feeling like they have accomplished something great, because in all actuality they have. They've inspired me to push myself harder, give more of my time and energy to their cause, and believe in something greater than myself. Northfield @11:40 and 1:00 on Saturday! Hilly 5k where we get to see them give their best and run their guts out. Had two runners work so hard they puked last time, so I know they have it in them!

Believe in yourself,

Day #123: 3 miles running at Northfield Mountain and then a mile by myself later. My kids did real swell on the hardest course they've run thus far. We'll have them better prepared for it next year. Tomorrow is my favorite race, Stockadeathon 15k in Schenectady. My Grade 1 sprain in my right ankle is still a bit tender, so going to take it easy. Last year I ran a 1:21:xx, one of my slowest times ever on the course. Going to see if I can narrow the gap with my previous PR of 1;07. Something around 1:15 would be nice I think?

High knees, keep it light,
Fight or flight, runners's delight.
Conquer the demons!

Tomorrow morning I will embark to finish my 8th Stockadeathon in 9 years. Trying to rest this sore ankle to see if I can have some redemption from last year's humid, sweat soaked demise.

Day #124: 11 miles; Got to Central Park early and was happy/relieved that I did not have to weigh in for the Clydesdale Division this year. They took my word that I was 222# and/or felt sorry for me/too lazy to get a scale. I was number 653 and made it my goal to finish higher than 653rd place. I stayed in the car a bit and then went to the starting line. It was weird. They had a guy separating girls from guys (nothing like segregation in 2012). We ended up having the same start corral and time though, so it did not make much sense to me.

Mile 1: It took about :35 to hit the line, but I started my watch on the line to ensure accurate chip time. They said there were over 1800 runners in the race! Ran a nice loop along the perimeter of the park and duck pond. (7:43)

Mile 2: Downhill past the school and more on the normal course as in years past towards Ellis Hospital (7:25)

Mile 3: Plunging down some side roads. Nice neighborhoods; running in the center and nearly slipped on the double yellow. Whoops! (7:11)

Mile 4: Past the guy playing the drums where he was every year. Found a group of Kinderhook runners and tried to hang tough as we came down to nearly the stockade. (7:08)

Mile 5: Through the stockade and then a left onto the start of State St. hill. They eliminated nearly all of the hill though and instead we have to hang a left and then go up a parallel road that is slightly lower gradient where it merges with bike path at the top of the street. (7:27)

Mile 6: Blisters forming on the top of my toes where it is rubbing on the NB shoes. Uphill and then rolling through the bike path on the way to the cemetery. (7:47)

Mile 7: Two more uphills, including the "Widow maker" back up the hill that we ran down in mile 2. They really hammer you in the closing miles. My steam was starting to run low. I knew it was going to be a rush finish. I heard some music and just put my head down and kept going. Grabbed a cup of water for the first time. (8:18)

Mile 8: Rolling hills around the pond as we got set to run the first mile backwards on the course. Ouches with each step. Wasn't going to give up now though! (8:38)

Mile 9: An old guy passed me and that's when I decided I wasn't going to let that happen so close to the pond. I have an image to uphold as a Clydesdale. We are noble and majestic and hard working, right? Pushed harder (8:07)

.3: Hopped on a train that was going past me and held onto the caboose for the last bit. Didn't have anyone pass me in the last .3 which was good. (2:22)

Chip Time: 1:12:10, good for my SECOND FASTEST Stockade-athon 15k out of the 8 times I've ran it and a 7:43 pace overall. Found out this morning the day after that I actually WON THE CLYDESDALE DIVISION. Seeing about possibly picking up my award sometime in the next week or two. Was proud of myself. Now comes the hard part - training to beat this time next year. I want to go sub 1:10 in the Clydesdale division! Or can I beat 1:07 for the first time? That's 7:15 pace!

Fatty division,

I ran hard for the gold, so

Now I can indulge!

Day #126: 6.26 miles in 50:07 (8:00/ mile); It was weird running without the cross country team after school, but I went up and out on the bike path towards Lanesboro for a 5k, then turned back around. Mile splits were pretty consistent: 8:38, 8:09, 8:07, 7:50, 7:43, 7:36. Negative split king anyone? Saw a couple walkers with dogs. Overall nice and relaxing. Must buy more body glide to get ready f

or the long races coming up! Onwards and upwards. Feeling stronger and recovering nicely after Stockade-athon. I am setting my sights at running sub 1:07 next year (sub 7:15/ mile) for the 9.32 miles. I can do this! Had a great meeting with my cross country runners today. Can't wait for the banquet in December! I will be a little sore though. It will be just a couple days after my marathon in Delaware!

Day #127: 1 mile only; front of my right ankle and underneath the ankle bone on the outside are sore whenever I walk. Running is about the only thing that makes it feel better. Really weird. Thoughts and prayers with our buddy Mark in this really tough and troubling time. I wish that I knew how to take the pain away. Life is too fragile and short. Day #128: 5.11 miles in 45:00. Just cruised and read from David Horton's "A Quest for Adventure". Read the first four chapters. Really inspiring and easy read. That guy (and his wife for that matter) are amazing people. I wanted to stop at 5k, but I ran an extra 2 for my buddy Mark and his father. The last two miles I closed the book and just thought about life, what we mean to people, what our legacy is and will be when we are gone. As I tell my runners, "Anyone can do it on a good day, but it takes a real hero to get it done on a [shitty] one."

Going to keep all my miles slow and easy from here on out until I'm done with the December marathon anyways. Can't jeopardize that now! Read about local legend Bob Dion and how he ran with David Horton on his AT speed record attempt. Kind of neat to see some local running history in print! Day #130: 5.2 miles; 3.2 miles in Lenox Mountain with Emmy. Got lost just a little on the way up. I kept slipping on the way down on the oak leaves and it was aggravating my right ankle. Such an annoyance because my body is screaming run MORE MORE MORE, and my ankle is being WIMPY WIMPY WIMPY! I did 2 miles tonight in 17:18 and it felt great! Maybe the key is that I can only run on soft, flat surfaces until this ankle heals. Am going to be in taper mode pretty much from now until December 1st when I have the marathon. 5 miles or under every day. I hope I don't embarrass myself at Turkey Trot.
