Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

Day 22: 6 miles in 51:30. Ran steady tempo, with a slightly faster last mile. Pleasantly tired at the end. Pushups tonight and some planks/situps. Got to get this girlish figure looking better.

So this is running,
All it takes is all you've got,
Work hard... big payoff.

On a (+) side, i am down 7 pounds since the start of this challenge. I am eating more healthfully and trying to minimize stress. Feeling better and sleeping better. Starting weight was 231, and I weighed in at 224 today.

Day 23: 7 miles with the last three a little faster. Total time was 1:03, good for 9:00/ mile.

Oh sweat, I loathe thee.
Yet I adore the feeling
Of sweet victory.

Got to get motivated to get at least one more 26+ mile training run in before the 50 miler. Might have to make myself do a long run at Olivia's, as it is pretty good elevation gain, iffy footing, and challenging single track on the way down. I just don't want to embarrass myself too much in the 50 miler. I mean, Anita Ortiz is going to be there after all. Would be nice to have her ONLY beat me by 6 hours or so.

Weighed 226# at the start, and 220# at the end.

Day #27: 9.5 miles - 14:00 into the first loop at Olivia's Overlook, at the Overlook (high point), a hornet flew up my left nostril and stung me. It immediately swelled up and I starting coughing out mucus and was a sight to see. I continued to push it down the other side as I still had 2 miles to go in the loop. Ran into a group of two dozen coeds that were out on a Kripalu walk of some sort. They must have been scared to see my big sweaty, mucusy lumbering form coming right for them. Still ran one of my fastest loops ever, at 35:00. I came home and iced. When Emm got out of work, I was determined to be vindicated and went back up and around the lookout for another 3.5 miles (41:00 ish), and then did an extended trip around the block with Lizzy and Emm when we got home (36:00). First run in my orange NB Trail Minimus. Love them! Favorite shoes of all time possibly. Total moving time today was 1:52:00.

Ouch! Oh no! A bee

Day #33: 6 miles total including 1 loop at Olivia's Overlook with Emm and 2.5 miles by myself in 21:15 while she took Lizzard around the block. Highlight today was when a guy sitting on the rock wall asked : "Hey do you mind if I read your bumper stickers?" That made me smile. Today was a tough day. Many of my colleagues went to honor one of our teachers who recently lost her fight with an illness. I couldn't go to the memorial service. Ever since third grade, I have not handled loss/goodbyes/partings well. I do not like the thought of not seeing someone again, and seeing coffins, ashes, etc. is even more unnerving. I thought a lot today about what I would have said if I could see Yvonne again - how things might go, and also thought about what things I might take away from our interactions in the past. Though abrasive and to the point, I respect her desire to see everyone succeed. It resonates not only in our students, but in our mutual friends. I see people striving to do this hard work called "teaching" but also do an even harder work - "learning". I think that we can all do better to strive to learn about our surroundings, our coworkers, our strengths, our weaknesses, our limits, and our dreams. What I learned from Yvonne was to never settle for the status quo. Never stop reaching, never stop pushing. This run's for you, Yvonne. Thanks for opening my eyes and making me see that the only one that can push me towards my goals is me. I wish you could have seen the transformations I am seeking to make in mind, body, and practice.

Life's short; Strive to love
Push towards transcendence - Give back.
Cherish each sunset.

Day #51: 7.5 miles. Ran with my cross country team. Biggest showing yet. 13 runners with still more in the wings. Hoping for a really great season. I have high hopes for both boys and girls teams. Warmed up and stretched at Russell Field. Sent the 5 quick boys out for a run to add some miles and helped the others around the field for a couple laps of jogging/walking/movement. Then joined in a 6 x 150m hill workout with them before jogging back to the school. When I got home I went for another run and did 4 miles in 33:21. Curtis reminded me today that I need to put fuel in the tank to get the calories burning. I have a suspicion my metabolic rate is in the pits right now. Hoping for a better result once I remember/force myself to eat breakfast and lunch. Funniest parts of the practice today were when NC found a baseball and told me he wanted the whole team to sign it and it could be our mascot, and when MC told me "You know Mr. Griffin, we might not all have asthma, but we all have sports-induced wedgies!" Priceless. (1:09:57 Komodos)

Conquering those hills,
Pushing past our comfort zone,
Working hard... Payoffs?

Day #52: 5.5 miles total. 2.5 miles very easy out and back to the bridge. Two new runners showed up for the first time. Just wondering where my top 4 girls from last year are. Girls team is dead in the water and they just don't seem to care. My boys team looks fired up and is ready to kick ass and take names. Went to Nonnos afterward and then saw 4 deer up in the field. So cute! Ran 3 miles at home in 24:46 (8:15/ mile). Going to Galway for a day tomorrow to see Harry who started college this week. 48:49 total (Komodos).

Sometimes it's funny,
Only as strong as your five,
Boys rock. Girls seem lost...
