Woke up at 4:20am to get to this race on time...Was initially excited that none of the really killer fast guys were there and I had beaten all the people at least once this year who ended up beating me so I was disappointed that I was 15 min back, 5 mins at the turnaround. I just didn't have it today. The worst was getting passed at the end by a 54 yr old. He has now beaten me in the two longer races but I can barely take him in shorter races. He ran a 2:51 marathon at Boston last year and he is clearly better than me in endurance right now. He also weighs 113lbs. Oh well...at least I beat Haynes :)

I think the race every weekend is starting to take it's toll on me. 22 mile race then a 14 mile than a 17.5 mile and then this week a marathon trail race which doesn't look easy by the elevation profile. I was hoping that everyone is going to do the 50k the week after since this is the first year of the marathon. If only the 5 or so people that beat me every week aren't there i have a chance to win...although my running prowess is not there right now....

Haynes and i decided to switch to a marathon with a net 370ft elevation loss in order to get better marathon times...i'm beginning to worry that breaking 3hrs isn't going to be as easy as i originally thought after 4 months of track workouts earlier in the year.

Don't get too down. If you think about it, we are only slightly worse than we were at the end of last season with all that track work. We just need to string together a month of good training. It doesn't need to be 70+mpw. It just needs to have workouts or races almost every other day. Today I am planning on doing a little speed with tons of recovery fartlek style. It seems stupid, but I like my vo2max pace to feel slow. Then tomorrow I will do a 5x1k workout and then have a recovery day before the wrentham trail race. Assuming I am not destroyed by that I will do 2 vo2max workouts next week. The next weekend there is a 30k road race in ma that I am thinking of doing. After that there is either another 30k or the providence downtown 5k (which at this point seems questionable that I could PR at but could be a good workout). Then there is the hogsback half and then the taper.

You sure do race alot. What marathon did you two switch to?

From haynes on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 00:00:02

Yeah, I do race a lot during a season. But I wouldn't say that all of those races are 100% efforts. Most of them are 90-95% effort. The races that I intend to go all out on this fall are the half marathon and the full marathon and the 5k if it is pretty cold (

Hey Josse! Nice to hear from you again...the marathon is called the Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon.

Can't wait to see what both of you do.
