ran my pre-race day 3.3 miles on the dirt path in town. felt weak, tight and got my weird shimmering vision and dizziness thing going on. it's all anxiety related. finally figured it out. It didn't progress to spots and losing vision though which was good. For some reason easy runs do that to me. Never in a race or hard workout cause i'm distracted from myself. i'm kind of nervous about doing well at nipmuck tomorrow. I have all these expectations for myself since i came in 2nd place at my last trail race. I just want to feel good and not bonk tomorrow. I have no idea how conservatively i need to start but if i don't push myself as much as i can i'll be disappointed. a marathon, especially a trail marathon is a strange distance because you can't keep a steady pace due to the terrain and it is impossible to know what that steady pace should be. i'll be psyched when it's over although i'm looking forward to it.

Don't get your underwear all in a bunch. I think this takes more out of you than you think, just go out easy and work into a good pace. It is all beyond your control at this point anyway.

I get that blurry vision thing when my salt content is low or over hydrated. So be careful this is more dagerous than being dehydrated. They have some articles in runnerworld.com about it.

good luck and have fun, that is what it is all about anyway.

Thanks for the advice! Going out comfortably is smart, it's how one would start a road marathon anyway. My vision thing is clearly not due to salt content or hydration. I used to think it was but I only get symptoms during certain times, usually on very short easy runs. There was a period of a full week where i couldn't run even 2 miles and thought there was something horribly wrong with me, but the next week i did the transalpine run (a 140 mile stage race in the alps and felt fine the entire time). It's kind of like a panic attack although kind of different. I've been working on it with a therapist lately, realizing it for what it is and trying to have it not impact my running. It's definitely triggered by stress though...

How often do you have problems...

and yes, i'm a hypochondriac so I worry about hyponatremia all the time :)

and i don't wear underwear when i'm running, so no worries about it bunching up!

I'm talking about right now silly, I don't know who would wear underwear while running-to much chaffing.

The vision thing happens in hot marathons, I get really sick after as well. So I am trying taking salt before long runs, today my stomach was upset. But that was probably from eating to much 7-grain ceral and black beans yesterday.

I just stinks to be nervous before a race. I get terrible nerves before marathons, I hate it because I think it takes way to much energy to be nervous.

Deep breathing, Deep breathing:)

you should bring salt with you. What do you drink during the long runs/marathons? Haynes and I are sold on nuun. It has about 5x the salt content of gatorade and we don't even do workouts without it. Not sure you want to overload on salt and then slowly lose it. Would probably be better being more consistent. With 50m races it is essential to use salt. I take 2-3 every hour starting from hour 1.

I usually just do water, but in the last marathon I started having the problem at mile 6 so I started taking poweraid. That seemed to do the trick although I didn't feel the greatest the whole marathon. I use Heed in training, I like the Hammer co. stuff because they don't have alot of sugar. If I take to much sugar in running it makes me sick as well.

I actually was going to try that is my next marathon, the salt thing.

power aid is no good. same with gatorade. heed is pretty good. i love nuun but wish it had calories or they had a calorie nuun for racing that had carbs. no sugar in that. you should try it! i'm sure you'll do much better with the salt!
