Today was my first ever win in any running race! Not super exciting since it is a 24 week series race but still...at least I can say i've won a "race" although it wasn't really a race as Haynes told me he would let me win today. I'm pretty sure I would have beaten him if we were racing though :) I've only ran 7.5 miles in the past 2 days before while haynes ran 22 or something.

We planned on running right around 31 min for the 5 miles. I was kind of nervous that I would be slow even though we ran a mile race the previous week with pretty good ~5 sec PRs. When we were doing 3 workouts a week there wasn't anything to be nervous about because i knew how each workout was going to feel like. i always wonder if suddenly i forgot how to run and will just be weak and slow. we went out in 6:09, then 6:14 on the only uphill mile, then 6:03, and I felt really good at this point and felt like i was just in the zone. my left hamstring felt tight like it did a couple weeks ago after a few miles and i was worried about it again, but like the last race, it just lets me know i have a muscle there and then goes away by the end. hopefully i won't have any real problems with it. i don't know if it's just my body or if other people's act up. my shin hurt during warmup,  then  my foot. then they just go away. So mile 4 was 6:01 and during this mile Haynes was complaining about the pace. I felt like I wasn't straining at all so decided to keep it there and actually accelerate to ensure that Haynes wouldn't have a change of heart and outkick me at the end. The last mile was a 5:54 which felt pretty easy. Averaged 6:04. My second fastest 5 mile yet on probably my least effort of the season. It's hard to taper though as i feel like i'm going to get fat because i like eating too much. I'm feeling pretty good and excited i may be injury free going into the marathon.

how do people normally taper? There is probably a great deal of differences of opinion. Do they run the day before? I plan on running maybe 4 miles or so to stay loose and an easy 7-8 2 days out. The two races i really care about are a 34 mile trail race in iceland on july 12 and the cape cod marathon on oct 27, although i don't see the point in signing up for a race if i'm not going to race. it's kind of a pride thing.

Good job on the win! Are you doing the whole series? When I taper for a marathon I start two weeks out (I use to do 3 but don't like that). For the last one I went from 75 miles to 60 miles to 58 including the marathon. I run everyday because that is what I am use to doing. But I don't taper if it is not a key race. You can always look at the top runners and look at what they do before the marathon.

Is the marathon this Sat.? Gook luck.

thanks! I've only done 6/10 so far. I'm moving to CT next month so I'll probably only do it 1 or 2 more weeks. Weekday night training race series are great. It's so much easier to do tempo runs and push yourself. I think 2 weeks out is probably what i'd do too. Not sure how much benefit one gets over a week. For ultras some people recommend a full 4 weeks of tapering! Although i guess the mileage volume is kind of more absurd with the back to back long runs. Marathon is on Sunday. Haven't done a run that long since march.i may bonk towards the end but i'm planning on eating tons. At least 1000-1500 calories. i think that is the real secret to being successful in the marathon is eating a lot starting early to fuel you the last several miles. when is your next big race?

I am doing a couple of low key races the next two weeks and then some halfs in july and aug. and St. George marathon in oct. which I hope to be below 3 hours.

I think I would be more afraid of falling on my face in a trial marathon than bonking. I have had some pretty nasty falls in trail racing.

Congrats matt. No matter what I say on my blog, you know I'm scared. I am glad that I didn't stay with you out of pride. I feel it shows maturity. But I'm still scared. We won't race on the roads again until next year possibly not until the marathon. I won't be too discouraged if you beat me in the marathon, but if we race anything shorter than 10 miles on roads and you win I will definitely be upset.

Yea for the first win! That really is quite an accomplishment. My only complaint is that you made it sound so easy. Darn you! If you're gonna run a time like that you better have to WORK for it. (He he he) Just kidding, I hold you in the highest respect. Congrats on a great race.

PS Is your blog picture just of a magazine, or is that actually you?

From matt on Sat, May 31, 2008 at 17:53:00

Thanks for the encouragement. I have worked harder than I have before. Still not hard enough! That is me in 2005 running in the grand canyon. It helps having photographers as friends who want to get running photos published! I've been in photos in trail runner magazine too :)

Anti - Haynes?, without MJ, great win, 300 commando points for the win. It seems you are ready for any rocky gut busting race, no doubt for toughness.
