Short-Term Running Goals:

Have not seriously raced since 2005, but just run for fun while gettting over several injuries.  Goal is to get back my fitness and not get re-injured.  I am much older now and recovery takes a bit longer.  Goals for 2011, besides staying healthy:

Wasatch Back Relay

Top of Utah Half Aug 1:32

Reach the Beach Relay (Sept)

The Other Half marathon Oct 1: 30

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would love to do a 50 miler, plus get back to running a marathon in the 3 hr + range, but need to get running healthy again.

Personal:

Married with two grown boys.  One has embraced running and the other is a snowboard fanatic.  My profession, I am a computer analyst and geek.  After hours, I am a fitness nut who also enjoys reading and hanging out with my family.

Buffalo Run 25K.  Ran about 20 min slower than when I ran it in 2007, but happy with being able to run that far post ankle surgery.  Had to walk a bunch on the uphills, but left feeling goo the last 3 miles.  Didnt stay for the official results, so no idea on placing.

Great course and fun atmosphere!

Hi ya, just wanted to say welcome to the fast running blog. :)

I was at the buffalo run Saturday volunteering. It was a crazy looking race.

Welcome to the blog! Looks like you had a good time! I was out there running the 50K, so I'm sure we crossed paths :). Results are posted on the website if you're curious.

Thanks for the welcomes! I think I was 11th in my AG. I was surprised that for a race of this size, the AG are 10yr groupings.

Nice job on the race! Trails after ankle surgery have got to be tough!!!

Big goose egg for running today.  I had a gait analysis in the morning which got me into work around 10:00 just in time for production issues at work.  Sigh.  Gait analysis was good.  Part one, the videoing on the treadmill, was today.  I meet with the sports med doc in 1 week.  He will analyze the video and whats going on with my form.

Hi Kelli, who does your daughter run for and what event? My son runs for Weber State and I think is running the 5000 this afternoon. He sat out of indoor track so that he could have a full year of eligibility next year, his last college year.

From Kelli on Fri, Apr 01, 2011 at 15:22:26 from 71.219.97.85

My daughter is actually still in high school! She is a senior at Riverton. I thought she said it was at UVU, maybe I am remembering wrong. She is running the mile.

Ran 9,1 easy miles (approx 8:25 pace) after a restless night of sleep.  Oddly, I felt great.  Must have been the Kashi Go Lean cereal with fresh blueberries & almond milk pre-run.  Usually, I don't eat much before morning runs.

Course was from home thru the Lagoon trails winding over to Legacy Parkway.  Ran total about 4.3 miles out.  I returned a slightly different route, just enjoying the morning.

Oddly, it was sort of a zen type run not thinking about the past, the future, but only what is.  Very nice!

Snow last night?  Really?  I was tempted to bag running, but then the sun came out so I decided to go for an easy 4.2 miler (33:52).  Just ran from home thru the trails behind Lagoon and back home.  Felt suprisingly good.  Yoga has been my magic ticket on getting healthy so I will make every effort to make time for class!

Some sort of bug bit my toe and I kept waking up in the night.  I finally got up and found some sort of ani-itch cream to stop it.  Yuck.

NRR for me, I just found out that my youngest had to run 1.5 miles for his fitness class at SLCC and ran it in 8:40!  This is my "I hate to run" son.

Ran from work, up City Creek Canyon to the 1 mile marker and back. 6.7 miles in 54:18. Slow up the canyon and low 7ish pace on the way down. The creek is running really high. I hope we don't have flooding issues!

Still having some insommnia issues. I fall asleep quickly, but then have been waking up and unable to get back to sleep. Its been 3 nights of this.

Wanted to go to yoga, but had to work late. Its marked on my calendar for tomorrow after work. This one is called Strength/Core yoga.

Beautiful run at lunch.  4.7 mile course from work, up Memory Grove to the guard shack at City Creek Canyon and back (38:42) .  Ran easy on the way up and quicker on the way down.  What a difference it makes being able to run in shorts and sports bra.

Went to a Yoga for Strength class after work.  Lots of strength moves, planks, handstands, balance moves plus hip openers.  I think this is already helping my running.

Note, this was my fifth running day in a row.  Have not done that since my ankle surgery in December!!!

Yoga was excellent.  Highly recommend Avenues Yoga in SLC.  They have great personal teachers and really work well with runners.

Met my good friend Anna at the Einsteins on Wasatch Dr and I am glad I had someone to meet cuz the weather was awful.  On my own I would have run on the treadmill and not as far.  We did a loop running south on Wasatch, then dropped down the hill running west and then back south again and wound up by Porcupine Grill (Big Cottonwood Canyon), then ran back on Wasatch.

Weather was really a horrible mix of snow, ice, and rain.  Roads were also slick, so our pace was approx 8:50.  Very slow for us.

I have been really sore since the Buffalo Run 25K so scheduled a massage for this afternoon.  I hope that helps put the bounce back in my legs!

Times for the 200s were MUCH slower than when I have done them in the past.  Avg 48 sec per 200.

Thanks Julie! 2005 was a great running year and unfortunately when I broke 3:00 in St George I said "I am retired". Never say that. I have had a string of injuries since. I am optomistic tho about 2011 and my goal is to get back into the groove.

5th running day in a row and legs of lead. Decided to do a short easy run as I had a scheduled yoga class later. The first 2 miles up city creek were dog slow. Then my legs perked up and finished at a 7:30 pace!

Visited the PT today for my first eval prior to the gait training.  Found that my right hip/glute/adductor muscles are much weaker than on the right.  Ran for about 4 mins while the PT videoed me and he found also that I tend to run like I am on a tight rope, adductor dominant.  He then had me run to a metronome to keep cadence and videoed me again.  Wala, form cleaned up.

I will go 3/x per week for about 2.5 weeks and will run for about 30 mins on the treadmill there doing all sorts of gait training.  The kicker ... no running outside of PT until I am done. Yikes!

Went to PT "Gait Training" today and ran 4 miles in 30 mins on the mill while listening to some sort of beat to keep at 180 strikes per minute.  Appointement was at 7:00 am and I felt like I was getting a cold so it was hard to start this pace right off the bat.  Before long I got into a groove.  The PT videoed me at the slower strike per minute and then to the beat and showed me the difference,  slight difference but over the course of miles and mile of training it will make a huge difference in not getting hurt.

Also added more glute and abductor exercises to the mix.  Left feeling pretty worked over.

Did yoga later in the afternoon.  More of a stretching type which was needed!

It has been years since I ran a 5K, but when I found out this was being run in my absolute favorite area ... City Creek Canyon ... I had to sign up.  I did a warm up with my huz and jogged to the City Creek gate and back.  2 miles.

Lined up a couple of rows from the front.  Lots of joggers, strollers, and DOGS.  No idea why dogs were allowed.

Took off fairly conservative as the course climbs at the start. 7:13 pace for the first mile.  Course  continues to climb for another .6 or so then turns and runs down down towards Memory Grove.  7:11 pace and slipped on dog poo.  Yuck.  Last 1.1, I put on the guns.  6:15 pace!

I don't know these trails very well, so generally just follow the gals.  Very cool morning which is odd for June, had to wear a long sleeved shirt!  Beautiful tho!  Rachel and I ran the loop with Heather bringing her back to the stadium in 1:09.  Heather is pregnant and thats about all she wanted for the day.  I wore my Garmin 405 and it registered 7.2 which we are sure is short.  The GPS is really bad for trails like these, lots of switching and hairpin turns.  We are guessing more like 8 miles.

Then Rachel and I went back out towards the Pipeline trail, pretty flat for another 4 ish miles.  Total for the day is about 13 we guess.  Not sure which is the nice thing about trails.

My first leg of this year's Wasatch Back Relay was leg 7.  Our team, Full Nelson, started at 1:30 and I was expected to take the handoff at Eden Park at 6:10.  Almost to the exact prediction, teammate Tim came barreling into the transition and I took off.  I had some sort of mishap with my Garmin 405, but thats another story.  I was running and immediately passed two gals, but felt like my breathing was off.  Temps were very warm and I felt dehydrated.  Didnt know why.  I drank enough fluids during the day, but felt off.  I kept running and picking off people, not bothering too look at my GPS, and felt just "okay" and then died the last mile or so.  I passed a guy soundly, but then he didnt like being chicked and passed me back.  Total time reported by our team was 27:23 but my GPS showed 28:34?  I have no idea on the discrepancy.  I uploaded my workouts from the GPS and it shows the "moving time" to be the same as what the team reported but the actual time more.  Don't understand this because I didnt hit stop or anything.  I ought to go back to the good old Timex?

We didnt hang around the finish so don't know how our team placed.  Overall time was 23:08.

I feel like the slacker on the team mileage wise.  Leg 19 was 3.8 miles climbing out of East Canyon to Hogback Summit.  It seemed harder than rated Moderate, but still very enjoyable.  I took the bracelet around 1:00 AM and there was a full moon.  Temps were a balmy 34 degs and I wore gloves, a beanie, shorts, but two long sleeve shirts.  Quickly I was too warm.  I started off with breathing issues again, but just tried to focus on passing people and was amazed at how many I passed during the climb.  I counted 22 people that I passed and most were walkers.  I tried to just keep moving and felt strong.  Total time was 30:49 for 8:06 pace.

Leg 31 was an easy 4.2 miler thru Heber.  I took the bracelet at about 8:20 and felt really good.  Passed 54 teams and just kept moving.  Total time for this leg was 28:32 for 6:47 pace.  Still not sure if this leg was accurate.  My GPS showed 4.06 vs. 4.2.

Morning was gorgeous with lots of runners.  After the run, we got bagels at Einsteins and I started feeling yucky again.  Went home, cleaned up, napped for an hr, and still feel achy.  Maybe I am getting a bug?  Will take it easy the rest of the day.

This was a dumb workout to do the day after speedwork, but I decided to park at the capitol and run up to the 2 mi marker and back for an easy 6.  Problem was I pushed it on the way down.  Mile 2 marker to Mile 1 marker was 7:00 pace, Mile 1 to the Gate was 6:46 pace, then the Gate to the Capitol was 6:50 pace.  Not stuff recovery days are made of!

Another horrible night of insomnia.  I go to sleep really fast, but wake up and toss and turn most of the night.  Got to get to the bottom of this!  Met Anna at 6:30 at the trailhead by Hogle Zoo planning to run the trails thru Red Butte and onto Shoreline.  We wanted around 7 easy miles.  We were worried about the fires, but the trails were fine from the fires but the construction at Red Butte messed up the run.  It was sort of a mix up of road & trail, but still fun.

We also saw two different races using the same course.  Odd.  The water stop was by the trail head and both races were using it.

Decided to try a tempo workout today.  Parked at the Capitol and ran easy up 11th to Virginia..  Plan was to tempo back.  First .7 was a slight uphill ... 7:22 pace.  Yikes.  Not tempo.  The next mile was slight downhill ...6:43 but it didnt feel good.  I felt like I didnt eat enough or something as I was already out of gas!  Next .67 was downhill then uphill into a stiff wind.  I was cooked.  7:25 pace.  I stopped to get a drink at City Creek and continued on a slight downhill to the car.  6:42 pace.  An up and down run, literally!  I felt really flat thru the workout but oddly invigorated too?

Opted to run with huz this morning. Usually, we don't do long runs together as he is much slower. However, I was still sore & tired from Thursday so thought it might work. We started at the Einsteins on S. Temple in SLC and ran up City Creek Canyon, until my Garmin said 6 miles. Pace was very slow and relaxed and we stopped for water and potty breaks when we needed them. Nice thing about this route! We then turned around and ran easy down the canyon. After a mile or so, I started to feel good so told R he was on his own. We both brought our Ipods just in case, so it worked. I ran back to the starting point, grabbed my hand held water bottle from the car and looped thru the Aves.

Overall felt good energy wise, but sooooo sore in the glutes and legs.

Race: Jupiter Peak Steeplechase (15.5 Miles) 03:03:00
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
15.500.0015.50

I signed up for this race to use as an easy long run.  I did it in 2004 when I was in really good trail shape and loved the course.  What I didnt realize was the course is now different and a much larger field of runners.

After ankle surgery in Dec, I have only run on trails in a limited amount.  The ankle stability is weak at best.  My goal for the race was to enjoy and have fun.  The drive from Farmington was about an hr and the packet pickup and potty lines took about a half hr, so no time to warm up. There was large field, maybe 400-500 at the start.  I positioned myself in the middle knowing I wasnt in trail shape.

Race starts and we went up towards the Legacy Lodge and under the Cresent lift.  I was immediately breathless and tempted to DNF.  I felt horrible till we got onto the single track trail, then I started to feel good and passed alot of people.  Maybe too many people.  After maybe 6 miles, I started having to walk sections.  The section where we climbed up to the top of Jupiter Peak was brutal for me.  I kept sliding back.  When I got to the top, I paused took a GU and enjoyed the view.

Course then had a rocky downhill and then another climb up to another peak, but not as brutal.  Then the fun downhill started.  I all of a sudden felt GREAT and tons of people.  What started to happen tho was mtn bikers were riding UP while we were running DOWN.  Not good.  With about 2 miles left to go, I swerved to avoid a biker and rolled my ankle.  I stopped for a bit and hobbled around.  Tons of folks passed me by.  I then tried to walk and found I could slowly run/walk.  I made it in at 3:03 but am sure I lost at least 5-10 mins with the ankle issue.  Frustrating.

Overall, loved the course & organization.  Aid stations were plentiful and awesome.  Only thing I don't like which seems to be a trend (Buffalo Run this happened also) is the trail races are getting too full for single track trails.  I think I prefer just running on the trails solo or with good friends.

Any trail racers know how to quantify effort with road miles.

Fun race. I have ran it three times and it gets bigger each time. Last year there were 300 runners. I think that should be about the cap for the race. 500 is too many. Sorry to here about the ankle twist. Hope it heals up soon for you.

From Jon on Fri, Aug 12, 2011 at 21:08:54 from 98.71.186.198

For trail miles, I just track actual miles plus elevation. If you really want to worry about your mileage, you could go off time or perceived effort (i.e. that was as hard as 19 miles on the road). I don't worry too much about it, though- tracking miles is just tracking miles, but actually running them is what makes us better. And your body did the same workout whether you count it as 15.5 or 19 or 100.

Hi Becky, I have had very sore quads after a downhill race ... it lasted well over a week. What really made a difference for me was: massage and very hot bath (25 mins if you can stand it) with Epsom salts. Slow running helps.

(are you the Becky that is friends with my friend Anna?)
