Running Accomplishments:

I've never worn compression socks.

Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 5 miles easy. Very slow. Odd twinge in the achilles but nothing too serious.

So I told the wife that all American 'men' shave their legs. Hoho, there was some chortling and guffawing in our house this morning:)

What a gross misrepresentation by saying "all". I wax mine.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 13:28:15 from 163.248.33.220

It's mostly a generational thing Bam. Based on my observations at the gym and here at school I 'd say that many men under 30 have opted for the hairless, womanly look. Most men over 30 have retained their masculinity.

From Kam on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 13:36:45 from 68.66.163.179

If shave my legs, my wife gets jealous because they are more shapely and attractive than hers.

From Bam on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 14:24:26 from 89.126.28.24

Russ - I doubt you wax: I've heard that it hurts when you pull the strips off - I guessing you couldn't handle the pain:)

Rob - So it's a young guns thing. I bet there are 'parlours' where Jake and his type go for a full double limb trim with a silky finish.

Kam, aka Sexy legs.

Dirty lies! I have so much hair that it whistles when I run!

From Jason D on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 18:16:32 from 24.1.80.94

No shaving for me. I would get beat up here. I do let me naturally hairless, becoming-more-boyish torso gather rays in the summer though.

Lore has it that shaving is for speed, but really it is to showcase, to which I say, let 'em shine.

Fear not Bam. I may wear those fancy socks and sleeves but the hair on my legs pokes right through them :).

From Andrea on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 07:57:39 from 72.37.171.52

In (only) Jake's defense, I made him do it because he cried whenever I would try to massage him with those hairy legs b/c I was pulling the hairs. Much easier now :) And it'll keep him cooler in the Phoenix sunshine for the marathon! I don't know about all these other girly guys! :)

From Lily on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 08:09:45 from 67.199.178.95

My hubs shaves his leg hair too. He doesn't opt for the bald ankle look. :)

Does your achilles bother you often Bam?

From Bam on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 10:46:07 from 89.126.28.24

Brandon - You've restored my faith in American men:)

Andrea - You can't fool me: Jake likes having girly legs:)

Lily - If I were to shave my legs I wouldn't know where to begin:)

My achilles was playing up because of nerve impingement, which was causing my hip/butt/leg problem. I've managed to 'cure' the achilles and everything else, by releasing the nerve. It took me 6 weeks to get to the root of the problem and then when I got there, it was so obvious and simple - I'm annoyed with myself for not sorting it out sooner. But all's good now:)

Not all American men, Bam. I never have, and I never will :)

From allie on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 18:28:54 from 97.117.83.221

that's why i married a brit.

From Jake K on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 19:25:13 from 67.177.11.154

Thank you Andrea, for pointing out how tough I am when getting massaged :-)

Plus, it just looks better when my legs match my chest.

From Jon on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 19:31:34 from 107.203.52.135

I don't shave my legs, arms, chest, and often even my face.

From Bam on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 03:09:08 from 89.126.28.24

Jon and Matt - you have been elevated into the supermale category with messrs Murphy, Taylor, Dase(half man - wears compression stuff and cross trains like a girl) and the posh junior: master Jason D.

Note: Matt, stewards enquiry - Matt is half a man too: he wears compression sleeves and has recently recorded cross training and worse still, counted it as real training (shock; horror).

Jake - there's no hope for you:)

allie - you were wise to marry a man:)

EDIT: Matt didn't count his cross training miles. Matt is elevated to 3/4 man - he still wears girly arm things when it's a bit chilly:)

From Bam on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 03:17:09 from 89.126.28.24

Russ, Kam and Lily's man - fall into limbo category.

Russ hunts - I doubt that hunters shave or wax; I suspect Russ may be joking. Time will tell.

Kam may have a penchant for silky smooth legs but his other half doesn't allow him to walk that dangerous path - so I'm not to sure what to classify him as...

Lily's man can't defend his reputation, so it's not fair to categorise him:)

From Russ on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 09:04:59 from 74.114.3.253

Okay, Bam, you've got me. I was taking the mickey. No leg shaving goes on for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, Jake. (Seinfeld?)

From Matt Poulsen on Wed, Feb 27, 2013 at 22:22:00 from 98.202.242.213

Thankfully, I'm still > 50% man. Boy, you work an entire life to be 100% man, and I wear arm compression sleeves only once, and my "man" status is now 75%. I have no excuses. I take full responsibility for my actions. Maybe there is still hope for me :)

From Bam on Thu, Feb 28, 2013 at 10:59:48 from 89.126.28.24

Matt - there's always hope:)

Russ - I suspect you might be a secret shaver.
