Running Accomplishments:

I've never worn compression socks.

Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 5 miles easy along the canal, followed by some PT and functional fitness.

I was able to run without any major discomfort - some slight stiffness in the tibiofibular joint and some referred pangs into the mid-substance achilles. But nothing major. Very pleased, mainly because the hip plague has done one.

Bad news: I think my digital scales are kaputt! They gave out a reading of 144lbs - yeah, you know what I mean. Fat chance of that being correct. That would mean that I've put on between 11 and 13 lbs in about 6 weeks. Come to think of it, they might be in perfect working order.

Time to knuckle down, no more faffing about - everything has to be about getting super fit. Sorry Janz, no time for shenanigans - top athletes need to stay focussed, self centred and disciplined. From now on, it's all about me... unless the wife tells me something different. I'm off to work on pronating...

That's not bad over 6 weeks (but I know the lament well). I think I put on 8 or so after 2-4 weeks after the marathon. And I was running a bit. Getting down there now, but I sure ain't no 144!

If it makes you feel any better Bam - I was 147 this morning - a good 8 pounds up from being race-fit in the fall. But I have a plan...as do you. Time to execute.

Great news! I easpecially love that last paragraph Bam. Stay the course, those pounds will come right off if you do it right... but you know this :).

You've done it before you can do it again on the weight loss. The good news is the important part -- sounds like you will be able to start ramping up soon.

more pronating... haha love it!

somehow, somewhere, pronation became ingrained in everyone's heads as a BAD word. The ankle is a tri-planar joint, pronation is a natural movement. Obviously too much is bad... but too little is just as troublesome.

Thanks chaps. The lard will vanish in time. Main thing is that I can 'run' again.

Jake, I didn't think anybody would get my little pronation joke - just goes to show.

Good news Bam. Keep on keeping on.

yo. [that's american for "listen up, bam" and/or "good morning"]

i want to see your FRB prediction list. post it on janz's blog in your favorite dingbat font.

also, i'm happy to hear of your good news.

From Bam on Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at 11:56:14 from 89.126.28.24

Rachelle - haha. Thanks.

allie - Dia duit. Póg mo thón. (That's Irish for - actually, better if you look it up: I might get in trouble if I translate it here; when you translate it, I'm only joking.)

I'd be happy to post my predictions but they might upset some people, so I don't think it's a good idea. If, however, you want to know what I think you'll run, I'll post it...

From allie on Wed, Feb 20, 2013 at 12:07:43 from 161.38.221.168

ha! and póg mo thón slides right on through the FRB UFF censor...

post on march 3rd. :)

Lardish at 144! I'm a brute of a runner in comparison :-) Good to hear you're feeling improvements. I'm off for some shenanigans (I love that word). And yes, Jake is probably the only person on the blog that got your pronation joke. You guys are fanatics!

When I don't run my weight shoots up much faster than that. So, I'd say you're not doing too bad. Glad to hear you are running a bit more pain free.
