Short-Term Running Goals:

To do a race.

Long-Term Running Goals:

1. Break the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group, when I'm 50 in 2015.

2. Never wear compression socks.

Personal:

Married with two girls (6 and 10).

The Qwer Old Fella's Marathon Method is a four year experiment.

The first year (2012) was about getting back into running, staying off the smokes and booze, while sticking to a healthy eating plan and shedding mountains of lard. All boxes ticked.

Year two (2013 - age: 48) Injured Jan through March. Build back up and work on my 5k speed. Goal 15:45.

Year three (2014) will be about doing my first marathon in the spring. (Just for the experience and on a tough course - maybe Tralee; goal time, 2:30ish.) Then begins the prep work for Berlin 2015

Year four (2015) is all about breaking the world record for the marathon in the 50+ age group - it's only 2:19 :).

The above might sound nuts; it is, but then I'm nuts. Please do not copy any of the training I do: if you do, you are likely to end up running like me - not a good idea.

The idea is to have a laugh along the way. If I fail, I don't know what I'll do - my whole belief system will crumble and I suspect that this little rock might just stop spinning for a couple of seconds. Jakers, I better not fail for all our sakes. That's some burden, even for SuperBam.

a.m. 3.5 miles at silly o'clock. Had to get my run in early as Grace is skiving off school with a cold.

Did a good bout of AIS and glute activation stuff before the run and followed it up with more AIS and glute activation exercises. Plan is to do 90 mins PT later and then repeat this morning's  exercises and 3.5 tonight.

I felt better running this morning - in terms of my leg/butt/achilles/brain - than I have in months. But I've lost my aerobic fitness and put on a pile of lard.

Luchtime: 90 mins PT and functional fitness.

p.m. 3.5 miles easy. Repeated this morning's routine. Injury has gone. But my achilles is still a touch tender to the touch, which isn't too bad. I think it'll clear up in a day or two. Great stuff:)

The lard that I put on in my absence from running isn't going away as fast as I would like. Stubborn lard.

Glad to hear you are feeling good Bam and I hope Grace is feeling better too. Sick days were my favorite as a kid. :-)

Good progress, Bam! Now stay healthy!

I hope you get better soon. The high-mileage Jakes are multiplying at the top of the mileage board.

Your fitness will spring back. It won't take many weeks. That's what's great about running. It takes a bit to get back into shape, but it's nothing compared to the time it originally took to get you were you were. I'm not sure what tense that is, but I think you follow me :)

Derunzo - I'm going on the scales today - I'm sure they will be faulty:)

Rachelle - thanks. From the back-chat I'm getting, I'd say Grace is on the mend.

Matt - Thanks. The plan is to be conservative.

Jason - Thanks. I hope you're right about the fitness. I don't plan on banging out 100+ mpw. I'm going to build up to 80-90mpw and then drop down to 70. Watch this space...
