I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Just easy miles.  Pleasant morning, kind of overcast and cool.  I saw noone and noone saw me.

I didn't start this afternoon until 4:15.  I HATE this time.  Did my tempo intervals on the trail first:  15 minutes wu at AP of 9:27.  5 intervals of 6 minutes each at target pace of 7:38.  They were 7:41, 7:41, 7:12, 7:31, 7:58, and 7:49.  This is pretty good, considering I was not running them on a flat track, but on gently rolling terrain.  I am particularly happy about the first two; they were on the exact same portion of trail, except that on the first one, I was running slightly down the whole time, and the second one I was running slightly up the whole time.

Then off to the track to meet my group, where we did some running to warm up (or in my case, to cool down!), then the leg tiring series of exercises, then a four mile jog on tired legs (in my case, very tired legs!).

OK, I'm officially doing a duathlon!  Its all really short, 2.8 mile run, 14 mile bike, 2.8 mile run.  Should be quick!  I have never "raced" on a bike before.

So my workout today is in two parts.  This morning's easy and short run, sort of a recovery run from last night's butt kicking workout.  This afternoon, I'm doing a bike warm up of 30 minutes, then 5 minute intervals at "time trial" effort.  I had to ask what "time trial" effort was.  Its supposed to be 85% effort, so sort of like a stride I guess, except that the intervals are 5 minutes long!  It sounds hard, and I hope I can find some flat road to do it on.

Fun stuff!

PM Update:  Bike intervals were fun, kind of.  Its really hard to tell what the right effort is.  Maybe I need to use the heart rate monitor.  Anyway, nice ride and a relatively sunny afternoon, and I didn't get knocked off the road by any cars.  Success.   Total mileage was 25.25 miles, but I can't really tell how fast the interval bits were relative to the rest of it.

Yoga this morning, and then easy miles this afternoon.  AP 9:15.  Its a pretty day, with sunshine and all, but it feels more like March than JULY!

A gloomy, rainy morning here.  I did kind of a short track workout; I'm saving some energy for my bike ride this afternoon with my bike club.  Warmed up on the trails near the stadium track, then did 5X400 target time 1:40.  They were 1:34, 1:36, 1:37, 1:37, and 1:36.  It is very strange to me that I just cannot seem to run these at 1:40.  I mean, its really not that hard, right?  You just slow down a speck.  Its almost as if my legs just have this pace in mind and cannot change it!  Cool down on the track.  I started kind of late this morning, so there were a bunch of grade school kids on the track, for a summer camp.  It was fun to watch them run.

I was too tired last night to post my bike riding update!   This was a great ride for me, with my Bike Club.  I have been afraid to ride with these guys; I was afraid they would go too fast for me.  But it turned out really great!  Our overall pace was almost 19 miles an hour; my usual pace is 16!   This is just the amount of pushing that I need.  We rode just over an hour and a half, finishing at 7:45pm.  By the time I got home and ate dinner, it was too late for me, and I just sort of fell into bed; that part was not so great!

A long and complicated run in overcast, cool weather.  This was a hard run for me.  I think maybe I worked too hard last week.  It took me several miles to even feel warmed up.  After the initial warm up and strides, I ran 30 minutes at easy pace, then ten minute marathon paced intervals with 5 minute RI in between, then a 10 minute tempo pace run, then 20 or so minutes of cd.  The faster bits felt fine while I was running, but I'm VERY TIRED now.

Stopped at the Coop food store after to get a "Mocha Monkey" that my friend suggested.  It was yummy!  Coconut milk, bananas, mocha, protein, I don't know what all.  Anyway, it is rather cold.  I drank it while I shopped for some groceries, and by the time I was at the checkout, I was seriously COLD.  Hypothermic time.  Its supposed to be July, and here we are absolutely freezing!  Its beyond ridiculous.  The checkout clerk had to put a little heater on the counter for me so that I wouldn't die on the spot and so that I could pay for my groceries.  I rushed home to a hot bath, and am now somewhat recovered.  You may think I'm being dramatic, but I was really, truly that cold.  I NEED SOME SUMMER!

Happy Holiday weekend everyone!
