I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Ski to Sea Relay today!  Got up to the mountain by 7am, gun went off at 8am.  I'm the first leg, so all 500 racers are starting in a big pack on the snow.  The first 200 yards or so, I was just trying not to trip someone with my skis or poles and trying not to get tripped!  I have had a terrible cold this week, and the coughing started this morning, so I was a little concerned about that.  But, once in the mountain air with adrenaline in me, I felt great.  I felt pretty good about my race, considering this is a brand new event for me.  Unofficially, I raced 4.00 miles in 43:47, AP of 10:42.  The effort felt about like a 5K.  The course is so hilly!  I found that on the flats, I was skating well enough to pass quite a few people.

Funny story:  on one of the uphills, a guy came up on me from behind and accidentally tripped me up a bit with his pole.  Of course, in a race like this, its no big deal, happens all the time, noone really cares.  So, he apologizes, and I said "No Problem Dude", and we go on.  Well, on the next downhill, I see him just in front of me, so I get into my racer tuck, speed up behind him and yell: "I'm up again and coming to get you!".  He looks back, and the look of terror on his face was priceless!  Good to know I can scare someone still when I have to!

I think I came in 197 out of about 500 racers, don't know my division time yet.  Heading down to the Bay now to wait for our kayaker (last leg), and celebration!

Update:  Added some bicycle miles riding downtown to see our kayaker come in home then riding home.  Our team came in 4th in our division!  That's OK.  Off to the after party now.

Did a wet and muddy "brick" workout with my friend this morning.  She has a 1/2 iron man next weekend, so she's tapering, and this is her last brick.  I sort of had a free day, so I did it with her just to see what it felt like.  It was OK, except its too wet and cold here right now!

I am trying to post a picture of my Ski to Sea Relay Team here, but can't seem to make it work.  I'll try again later.

"Easy" run of 3.48 miles, following an incredibly rainy and stormy night.  Beautiful bright morning, with playful clouds, a stiff breeze, and puddles everywhere!  The miles are all a bit too fast (8:48, 8:32, 8:42, 8:16).  Went immediately to yoga and  then a 1.5 hour bike ride, definitely at "easy".

Life is good!!

Early am track workout, wu, 4X1000 at tempo pace, cd.  Target pace on the tempo bits is 7:38 (Actual:  7:09, 7:29, 7:41, and 7:35).  Tempo pace is just so weird to me, not fast, not slow, just weird.

Went straight to yoga, now I'm very tired.  Tomorrow is a day off except for yoga, and I think I'm really going to need it for a change!

Another beautiful morning here after a very rainy night.  Its been raining so hard here the past few days, absolute waterfalls of rain.  I'm going to walk into the park this morning and look at the waterfalls; they will be raging.

Coached my third graders this afternoon; they were very unmotivated, so we played some running (sprinting) games, then ran laps barefoot around and around the playground.  Running barefoot is healthy, but running barefoot with a bunch of real kids is absolutely the bomb.

Marathon miles were in 10 minute segments with 5 minute easy running in between.   So, five miles at easy, the 10 at M (8:02), 5 at E, 10 at M (8:17), 5 at E, 10 at M(8:17), 2 miles at easy.  The marathon paces felt good, except for the first one, which I just couldn't get slowed down enough.  I think I was just a little bit too excited to run fast!  I'm happy with the second two  M pace sessions.  I felt sluggish on the whole run, though; sometimes I don't think a day off does me any favors.

PM Update:  An unexpected bonus run!  4 easy miles in the Vroom shoes, AP 8:44, just the lower end of easy pace.  Excellent run.

The light of late day

flickers and winks through the trees

making me giddy.
