I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

Mountain run.  Cold, dry day, overcast.  I didn't want to be outdoors, so I planned a run in my favorite mountain area.  Long, medium steep hills and technical trails.  AP was 11:40!!  Good 50K training.

Pool running this morning!  I've kind of missed it.  Not.  Hopefully the wind will die down a bit here by afternoon.  I've planned a 30 mile bike ride with my friend who is training for an ironman.

I signed up for a couple of races this morning.

1.  A 5K on Feb. 13 in Seattle.  This one should be fun; takes place at Greenlake Park, one of my old running spots when I lived in Seattle.

2.  A 10K on Feb. 27 in LaConner, WA, just down the road from here.

3.  The Chilly Hilly Bike Ride on Feb. 28 on Bainbridge Island.  This is a really big, fun event, and can be quite CHILLY and is always hilly.  The LaConner run is on the way, so it will be a fun filled weekend.  I am already hoping for some really good food afterwards.

33 degrees at 7:49 am.  Forgot my gloves and hat.  Forgot to wear longer pants too.  Had coffee with husband and daughter at a bakery and then ran the interurban.  It was supposed to be 40 minutes easy, then 6X50-100m strides, FAST.  The 40 easy minutes sounded pretty boring, so I took off into the "100 acre woods", a tangled mass of semi-trails and knee deep mud.  Got lost, found the main interurban again at exactly 37 minutes, after being chased by a large and potentially dangerous black dog with large teeth.  I didn't feel like measuring and marking a section of trail, so I just did the strides by feel for distance.  Strangely enough, 4 of them came out at exactly .07 (100m would be .06).  The last two were .05 and .06.  I guess I'm pretty good at guessing distance.  I just started and stopped when I felt like it and jogged about 15 seconds in between, just long enough to stop and restart the watch.

AP on the 40 minute run was 9:51, slowed by debris and mud.  Mile pace times on the strides were:  6:11, 5:38, 5:34, 5:34, 5:58, and 5:16.  They felt like hard effort, but not quite all out.

Sunny day here; I think I'll head outside and clean up my yard and collect some vitamin D!   PM update:  Yard work done in time to get an hour of biking in!

OH, THIS DAY OF REST IS NO FUN!  Its sunny out, so its that much harder not to go for a run or a bike ride.  The whole week has been a "cut back" week, and I'm trying very hard to believe that it is a good thing, but really wanted to run today.  Worked in the yard instead, made a huge mess of branches and sticks in the driveway.  It was very satisfying.

Spent some time planning Saturday's mountain training run.  Got many maps and topo maps; the trails look rugged in spots and its hard to guess how long this run will take us to complete; its only about 1/3-1/2 of the mountainous portion of the 50K.  Undoubtedly, we will not be running it at 9 minute miles!  Anyway, I've planned a 13 miler for our group, and then I will do my MP and tempo time afterwards on the (relatively) flat trail.

Another early morning, track by 5am, yoga by 6:30.  Silly little track workout, fun with drills and easy running.  Nice yoga though, lots of focus on hip openers.

In the strange journey of healing my knee and ensuring that no more running injuries happen, I'm having my tailbone fixed.  It was broken badly about 10 years ago, and is apparently wreaking havoc now.  Never in my youthful follies did I imagine that my body would still be feeling all the damage inflicted while I was still stupid.

30 minutes of treadmill.  Ho hum.  Tomorrow back to work and more running.  Did some stretching and weight lifting (upper body only).

Awesome trail run!  Very slow pace on the easy miles (AP 11:26), because the trail is so difficult and muddy and rocky and steep.  There is a whole section that is "unrunnable", but most of the course appears to be  runnable.  I'll explore the rest of it in the next few weeks.

MP and tempo miles were back on the flattish interurban trail, and went fine, right on pace.
