I have raised two running children, one competitive and one not.

I have learned to run in ice and snow and I don't complain.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Work towards a faster marathon by Spring 2012.

Get my 5K down to 21:30.

Place in my division at duathlon and triathlon.

Train for biathlon.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Joining Forrest Gump

The assignment was to go out and run exactly three miles at a heart rate of 133, then run the remainder of an hour at whatever felt like easy.  It was literally howling wind here all last night and into the morning, so I waited as long as I could to get out there; I don't like the high winds.  Winds are so bad here that all the state ferries are shut down.  Anyway, as soon as the wind let up, I hit the trail.  But, the cold driving rain started as soon as the wind stopped!  I had NO IDEA what 133 Heart Rate is, but it turns out to be about a 12 minute/mile pace!  I was not even breathing hard, let alone moving quickly enough to keep warm in 42 degrees with shorts on!  Never in my life have I run so slowly in such awful conditions.  I run in rain all the time, but I run fast enough to keep warm.  This run was beyond ridiculous, and I think I exceeded my target of 133 by a bit.

I was so grateful to have that part done with!  I ran the next three in 9:33, 8:22, and 8:31.  I have absolutely no idea what this silly test was all about, except maybe either my heart rate monitor or my heart are broken.

On the positive side, it is wonderful to be able once again to get out and run for an hour, whatever the conditions!

You really don't know what the point of the test was? Who came up with it? I'm curious...

From JD on Wed, Nov 17, 2010 at 17:14:22 from 70.96.78.149

The point of the test was to dig a hole, and then fill the hole back up.

Glad you're running comfortably again!

What are you talking about JD?

Jason McK: No, I really don't know what the point of the test was. Pointless until I hear differently.

Aunt--I think what JD is saying it is a goofy test.

133 seems slooow!

From what I have heard from many of my friends who have used HR monitors to train, it shows you exactly how much too fast you run most of your runs. Most people are surprised at just how slowly they are supposed to train to run "easy" ... those that stuck with it found they were able to ramp their speed up a little after a while but the first few weeks were painfully slow. That said, Dean uses it on his easy days to make sure he is running easy, but he is like me (actually I am like him since he trained me for my first couple years of running) and doesn't wear a garmin or care how far he is running (having run with him many times I KNOW he underestimates how fast he runs, he loves to tell people he runs at 8 min pace - when he rarely runs that pace, unless he is with me and complains about how running with me hurts his hips).

Elite Africans often run their "easy/recovery" runs at 10 min pace -- of course, they are running 3 times a day and running their workouts at sub 5 min pace. The Japanese marathoners run so slowly on all their runs (slower than 9 min pace), except workouts, that Greg's elite athletes can't run with them - but they are still some of the best marathoners in the world. Anyway, I don't know if that was the reason, but I have heard many of my friends say the same thing ;-).

Glad you got to run what you felt like for part of the run. When you come out here, I doubt we can run together, because I am sure you would think I am too slow for you. But you can zip around and enjoy the warm weather anyway!!!!

Wow, Bonnie, that is interesting! I will have to get used to wearing more clothes if I'm going to run that slowly!

From Bonnie on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 13:45:45 from 184.49.166.66

I am not sure if that is what it was -- it just that most people who train with HR monitors are told to keep their easy days within 65-70% of their Max HR ...

very interesting commentary from bonnie. thanks!
