I hesitate to comment on these topics but I like what you said here, so I will anyways :-)
If I was the big guy upstairs, I'd want people spending their Sundays outside in the beautiful world created for them, instead of (or in addition to) inside man made boxes.

Yes, definitely. For me as long as it's positive and re-generating in some way, I believe that it's ok but should try not to become over-emphasized on it and maintain where my focus should be. Everyone should be free to make a choice for themselves based on their own belief system. That is why I am so passionate about freedom of religion.
