Steve,

You should come and race anyway. You will most liely surprise yourself and do very well anyway. You will be rested and ready physically so you might as well give it a shot. Worst case if things are not going well just call it a day early and get a decent tempo in. Hope to see you there. Do you need a ride on Friday? Sasha and I are heading up Friday evening.

Usually when someone says they're not feeling well, they go on to win the race.

I think you'll do great. Just trust in your massive aerobic base.

I have had some of my best races when I have felt completely overwhelmed in my life. Somehow knowing or not caring how I performed because of other life events allowed to me relax and have a great day running. Either way I hope things resolve themselves and life looks a little brighter. Hopefully we will all see you - you have earned the right to run well and deserve great things!

Steve:

This is your regular pre-race anxiety. You feel the pressure to perform because you've been running so well. I also noticed a higher than normal anxiety level, and wondered why. In all the other races there was hardly any. Then I realized I was feeling the pressure because of being in better shape and tapered.

I suggest you think of this race as a 15 mile tempo run at 5:40 pace followed by a pickup if you feel good, steady pace to the end if you feel average, and a cool down if you feel really bad. Finish the race though, regardless of how it is going. I believe you always should unless there is a serious risk to your health just out of respect for the runners that do their honest best but still find it a challenge to qualify for Boston, break 4:00, or even to cover the distance. Also, this is a marathon, so anybody can crash. You might be down to a 7:00 mile jog and in an out of money position, but a runner ahead of you could very well be down to a 7:45 jog and slowing down. Or he may be injured and drop out. That steady jog at the end has earned me quite a bit of money in the past when I decided to defy the discouragement and just keep going.

Good Luck Masterhunter! You are going to do so well. Remember, the worse the dress rehearsal goes, the better the performance goes. You're just saving it up. In a couple days we are all going to be reading about how you've never felt so good in a race--I firmly believe that.
