Enjoy running and racing at whatever level I am able to. Possibly run another marathon post Microfracture Surgery in under 3:00.

I'm in the Army. I am married with four children (20/17/13/8 years old). Trying to return to previous running form after having microfracture knee surgery in July 2008.

Did not get up to run with Sasha as I did not sleep well and was feeling pretty bad. So I ran 4 miles with kids when I got home with last two at 7:00 pace with James. Knee hurts pretty bad still and to top it off I think I am coming down with something again. When it rains it pours!

Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. Ted, I think you are getting near the point where continuing to try to train through this thing might be a little crazy. Take it from a guy who's done a lot of crazy when it comes to running!

I've had a couple bouts with knee pain (patellofemoral pain syndrome) over the last few years, once in each knee at different times. In both cases, attempting to train through it only made it worse, and the only way to get it to go away was to completely stop running. In addition, just ceasing activity wasn't quite enough, as it didn't completely get better until I actively pursued a physical therapy program.

IMO, it's usually better to just bite the bullet, accept the total loss of fitness, and focus on getting better while fixing whatever inherent problem your body has. You can then come back better and stronger than ever. Rehab may be the way to go on this. I haven't been reading your blog extremely closely, but it seems like this has been going on for a while. Better to take two months now than miss a year.

I definitely agree with Paul. I just got over a partially torn vastus medialus that led to some patellar distracking, and that seemed really stubborn. It would hurt anytime I had my knee bent at all, and even swimming made it painful. It took a good four to five weeks of rest to make it "run-able" again. If I could have gone back, I would have stopped running once it felt it. I tried to run through it and I was definitely not going to work. Keep your spirits up! I know it's hard but time off now prevents a long time off in the future.

Keep your chin up Ted. At this point none of the options must sound that good. I have never been through any real injury. But I think Paul is a great example of how to deal with it.

Ted-how's it going? I assume not so good since no posts :( Benn on the blog was able to keep up on his blog through his injury and I think it kept him motivated to do what he could to when he couldn't run. Anyway, hope your knee is getting better.

Not good. I have been too busy to get back to the doctor but now that school is out I am going to head back to the doctor and get to an orhtopedic doc to get a second opinion. The knee is not healing even with over a month of no running. So this week I hope to see the doc and see what the next steps are to get on the road to healing. Physical therapy or surgery or both. Either way I am open to anything at this point.
