AM - 10.1 miles with Sasha. The New Year came in with a blast of cold this morning as it was a nice and cozy 8'F. I was not very excited about my run as my hip was killing me all day yesterday along with the calf. So I told Sasha I would attempt to run 10 at an easy pace. The hip feels almost like it is dislocated. I discovered that the calf and hip felt better with a shorter stride so I ran with a much shorter stride and things felt a little better. The hip still felt out of whack but bearable at least. Overall we went faster today but it felt slower and easier than yesterday. Average pace was 7:01. Good news is I only felt the knee twice during the run which is much better than last week. So I think I will stick with 10 miles a day for now and try and see if I can set up an appointment to have my hip looked at.

AM - Same old 10 miles with Sasha only slower than normal. Just an easy chat run at about 7:35 average. No real changes with other issues so still just struggling along.

Hope you can figure this out soon and get fully recovered so you can have another stellar year. Take care of yourself. For one, we need you for Del Sol (and to run with at Ogden again this year!).

You could look at this as good aerobic training so your ready for the spring to hit it hard. I'm not really pushing the pace right now either.

AM - Met with Sasha and when I got to his house Michelle was also there for the run. Sasha had forgottent that she was coming and she woke him up at 6:00am as we were not planning on running until 6:30am. I think she ran 3.5 miles while waiting for me to show up and Sasha to get ready. We then headed out and decieded to do some fartlek work for Michelle ont he parts of the trail that were not snow covered. We did several shorter stints and then at about mile 4 we hit a stretch that was clear for a mile so we picked it up for that two mile out and back section and did 2.1 miles in 13:04 which was at 6:13 pace. Then at the end the trail was fairly clear so we picked it up for the last mile and hit a 5:55 which included icy sections and a bridge tunnel and several 90" turns. Michelle was pretty impressive today and it seems that she will be trouble on the local running scene this next year. She is running Painters in two weeks and I think she is capable of a 1:23 half right now. Overall not a bad day. Things felt a little better today all around so hopefully this trend continues.

Wow to Michelle! And good job Ted. It is so cool that you and Sasha share your runs with other people and help them improve.

Hey Ted, I was wondering if I could impose on you for taper advice. I hear you are quite the expert... I've been running 20-30 miles a week for quite a while, my highest week was 34, longest run 12.6.

What would you suggest I from now until the Painters Half?. (This is my first half marathon--I've never even raced a 10K, or even an 8K!)

AM - Run with Sasha and Tyler on the normal uneventful 1/2 route. A bit of a heat wave befoe the storm as it was 47'F but fairly windy at times. Overall average was 7:00 with the last two miles in 11:54 with the last mile in 5:44 as Sasha was feeling peppy and started to push the pace. Tyler ran tough and hung in there the whole way as well. Within 45 minutes of the end of our run the weather took a major turn as the temperature dropped from 47'F to 32'F and it has been snowing like crazy. So far two inches and it has been snowing for only about an hour. Forecst is calling for up to two feet by 5:00pm Sunday. If so this will make Monday mornings run very interesting. Oh yeah, it was a fairly eventful run at one point as well because I hit a patch of ice and almost went down. I was sliding, skating for about 10 feet and was very surprised I did not fall.

Hey Man,

Just perusing some of the running blogs and came across yours. I am trying to get movtivated again. I also saw you may be in the Army. I am currently. I used to run in college myself and am trying to find more time for it. Well looks like your trianing well. Keep it up!

Yes I am new on the block and to blogging. And I am bored, in Germany, late at night, watching the SeaHawks game. Send me some words of wisdom when you all get the chance.

From ArmyRunner on Sat, Jan 05, 2008 at 18:52:00

Brad,

Yes, I am in the Army. I am watching the Seahawks as well. Anyway it is good to see you are trying to find a way to get back in shape. Joining the blog is a great way to get motivated and start running again. What is your blog name? If you have not set one up I highly recommend it. There are a lot of runners of all abilities on the blog including multiple Olympic Trials Qualifiers that are willing to offer advice and encouragement. If you join and blog your runs consistently you will be welcomed and encouraged along the way be all. As far as getting going just try not to do to much to soon. Try and establish a daily habit of running at least six days a week even if it is only 2-3 miles a day at first and slowly work up from there. Just realize it will be much slower and harder than when you were in college. However, with time I am sure you can return to your old self. I know once you get in shape the Army hsa some good runners wherever you are and you can try out for the Army Ten Miler team and find guys to train with this way. I know USAREUR sends a team every year and they are usually pretty good. You should check with your local MWR sports office and see when the trials are and see if you can eventually find a running partner this way. Anyway, best of luck and I hope to see your progress on the blog.

AM - 10 very easy miles with Sasha and Jeff. The conditions of the trail were pretty bad so 8 minute pace was about the best we could average. In fact our average was about 8:10 pace. The rough conditions made it feel harder than it really was but it was still pretty easy. Still some nagging issues but no need to complain as I am still running, just not as much as I would like.

AM - Woke up at 4:30am to an eventful morning as there was about 6 inches of snow in my driveway that needed shoveling before I could head down to Sasha's. Made it about 10 minutes late and caught Sasha as he was leaving without me. He turned around and fell as he ran around the corner to meet up with me. So we headed out on the trail and it was covered with a fresh layer of 4-6 inches of snow and it was snowing heavily the whole run. Pretty slow the whole way but we did test how fast we could run for one mile and hit a 6:29 but this was hard as the feet were really slipping on every push-off. We ended up running just under 8 minute pace the whole way. No additional falls but a few close calls as in some spots there is still ice under the snow on the trail. Then both I and Sarah's running partners cars were stuck at Sasha house. We eventually got them going but going back and forth slowly until we got enough momentum to get out of the curb area on the side of the road. It was interesting getting back to my house as I had to find a more round about way since people were stuck on the hill going up the normal route to my house. By the time I left for work I shoveled an additional 6 inches out of the driveway so we have had over a foot of snow and it is still snowing pretty heavy right now.

AM - Easy run with Sasha on the ice again. Was planning to go more than 10 but the knee was acting a bit funny so 10 was good enough.

PM - Went on a scout camp out that involved doing a two mile hike in snow shoes at about 9,000 feet. It was dark when we started and I was asked to lead and break the trail to the Yurt (small tent like structure in the middle of teh woods). The problem was there was about 10 feet of snow and about 4 feet of fresh powder. I had a very good pair of snow shoes but with the powder I was still sinking in up to my thighs with every step. athose behind had it much easier as I was pushing the snow down for them. It took us about an hour and a half to go 2 miles and I was working my butt off. The hip flexors were getting a killer workout. This was a lot harder than any of the 15 mile runs I have been on lately. In the morning the way back was not as bad as the trail we made the night before was still pretty good with only about 4-6 inches of new snow. Still a workout but much easier. So two miles on snow shoes but as good as a 13-15 mile run leg muscle wise.

I do plan on pacing you. I wish I could race and am very tempted to do so but I need to be cautious since the knee is still bugging me off and on. Sasha suggests I pace you for 6-8 and then if I feel good take off and see how many people I can pick off. So I will see how things go tomorrow. See you at Steve's tonight I guess.

AM - 2 miles on the BYU indoor track with push-ups, sit-ups and strength drills as well and then joined Sasha and Jeff for 10 more miles. Overall averae pace was about 7:15 for the 12 miles. Not bad for the ice and snow on the trail. I have been doing some strength drills and hip streches three days a week to see if it helps my hip and stride issues. Today was the fourth time doing these and I am starting to notice that I feel like I am running taller and have better overall knee lift and push-off. I mentioned this to Sasha and he said it did not look like my right leg was dragging behind as much either so he suggested we do the stride length measurement in the snow again as well. So we measured and the stride was much closer. It went from a almost three inch difference to only a 1/2 to one inch stride length difference. So the extra 15-20 minutes three days a week may be paying off. One can at least hope so but only time will tell. The knee is still nagging a bit so I guess I will stick to 60-70 miles this week as well. Looking forward to getting miles up but I want to make sure the knee is pain free first.

Woke up at 4:30am and went to Sasha's as normal but today was an unusual event as I knocked on Sasha's door and waited for 30 minutes and no Sasha. Sasha is usually very reliable and even if he is behind a little he always answers the door. So I decieded to just head home and go to work early and then run in the afternoon when it is a little warmer anyway. Maybe Sasha will join me later today as well.

PM - Ran at the BYU indoor track with Adam and kids. Did 1 mile in 8:11 with Jared and then 3 more with James at sub 7:00 avg. Then one more mile at 6:25. So hit 5 miles in 35:10 and decieded to pick it up a bit. Did the next 5 miles in 29:47 with all miles right at 6:00 pace except one at 5:47. Then ran another mile with Jared and James in 7:46 which is Jared's best mile time. So 10 miles of 11.5 was at  sub 6:30 average.

AM - 2 mile warm-up and then paced Michelle for the Painters 1/2. The knee hurt during the warm-up but not too bad during the race. The good news is that 6:00-6:15 pace felt very easy and smooth. It was fun to push Michelle and see her accomplish a new PR. The course was short as the GPS after downloading gave me 12.92 miles. At the pace she ran this would convert to it being short 1:03. So her time of 1:21:39 plus 1:03 gives her an equivalent time of 1:22:42. Also along the way she hit multiple road PRs. According to my GPS data the splits are listed below but the fastest 5K section during the race was a 19:16 and the fastest 10K section was a 38:43. We hit 10 miles at 1:02:58. I think the 10K and 10 Mile are both road PRs for Michelle. I was being very vocal the last 4 miles as I could tell she was hurting. She hung on pretty well though running about 20:10 for the last 5K. Overall a good weeekend with a good tempo run and pacing a fellow FRB member to a new PR. The big event of the weekend was I forgot my shoes and ended up running in a pair of Steve's old racing flats which were about a 1/2 size to big but they did the job. Thanks to Steve and his wife for the great hospitality and making the trip so much fun. Oh yeah I still won my age group as well. Garmin data follows:

AM - 10.1 miles in the fresh 3-4 inches of snow on the Provo River. Had about 6-7 inches in my driveway by the time I got home. Shoveled the driveway for 30-40 minutes and I will have to do it again later as it has only been a couple of hours and there is another 3-4 inches already. Showed Sasha the drills that I do 3 days a week that seem to be helping me. He has a hard time doing them especially when I try and get him to do them faster. Ted, good miles today! Sorry to hear the knee is still a thorn in the backside! Did you injure it? or is it just one of those things that come and go? The deep massage really helped my knee. My "IT" band was tight and was pulling my knee cap out of it's groove. If your pain is on the outside, that may be the problem. If this is the problem knee tapeing will give you immediate relief! My neighbor is a physical therapist and showed me the technique for this. While it's not a permant solution, it will provide instant relief while running.

From ArmyRunner on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 12:41:54

Yeah the knee has been bugging me for a couple months now. It has never been an issue in the past. It does not seem to be getting worse really but it is not going away. It may be IT related but I am not sure. I finally made an appointment to see a recommended sports chiro for next week so we will see what he says. I may also go see my regular doctor as well just to get a couple different views. I am willing to try about anything right now.

From Dale on Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 10:25:25

I've been there with the knee problems. Went as far as getting an MRI and visiting my orthopedist to discover....nothing. I even tried the knee taping my PT recommended once, but it made things worse for me. Decided instead to focus on strengthening the knee stabilizers, mostly the quads. I found that lunges, one-leg squats, and chair exercises 3-4/week over a couple of months strengthened things enough that I no longer experience the pain, so mine must have been tracking/stability related.

I also read an article about a female elite (can't remember which one or where the article is now) that dealt with the similar non-specific knee pain and dealt with it using the chair exercise, working from 1 minute up to 8 minutes at a shot. Wow. I'm only on 2 minute now, but it seems to have helped.

Hope you can overcome it soon. Good luck.

All of us had a couple of sliding adventures but no falls. I am really looking forward to winter going away. It will be nice to be able to run on a surface with traction and not being worried about hitting ice and going down. The cold does not bother me nearly as much as the fact that we are running on snow and ice day in and day out. I will see the doctor next week about the knee so we will see what they say. I have been surviving on 60-70 miles a week but really just want to get this thing fixed if possible so I can really start training again. Right now it feels like I am really slacking and not building the base I really wanted to this winter.

Nice run in the heat wave. Have you tried doing any strength training on the knee? My wife had to visit a PT last year because of Knee pain and basically they did a lot of strength training to build the knee up to help her out.

I'll keep you in my prayers.

From adam on Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 17:17:14

I was thinking the same thing today- I can deal with the cold no problem, but it will be nice when there's no more ice on the road, no more slowing down at the tunnels, curves, and turn arounds, and no more praying you won't fall during next 20m of ice and snow (maybe that's just me).

Maybe we could invest in a couple of fastrunningblog.com ATV snow plows...

AM - Went up with Sasha and Steve to run the SLTC 5K. Ended up 8th overall with a 17:16. I had no goal going into this race except to just run by feel and make sure I did not damage the knee any worse than it is. So after about 4.5 miles of warm-up and doing my drills I headed to the start. The knee pain was there but bearable and not getting worse so no real problems. I drove up with my son James and Sasha and we picked up Steve along the way. Met Adam W. and James at the start and guessed a good start pace would be between 5:20-30 pace and just see how things went after that. Adam took off a little faster than me so I was content just hanging back a little bit. I did not look at me mile splits until after the race as I was just trying to run more by feel. The funny thing is that the pace did not feel fast but I did not feel like I could get moving any faster. It felt more like 10K to 15K pace but that is abouot all that the legs wanted to give. Breathing was fine and I never really felt the true pain of a 5K. After looking at splits I ran fairly even paced. 1st mile was 5:30, 2nd mile was 5:30 and 3rd mile was 5:40 according to GPS which measured the course right at 3.11 miles. I think I slowed during the third mile a little because I caught up to another runner and was sort of stuck behind him for about a half mile or more. The road had some snow and ice on it and you had to run in a single file line unless you wanted to go in the snow and ice. Everyone once in awhile it would open up so you could run two wide and try to pass but when it did there were runners coming in the other direction blocking the way. I finally got around the other runner with just under a half mile to go and I put about 7 seconds or so on him in less than a half mile. I was closing on Albert Wint fairly quickly but ran out of time. I think I could have caught him if I had another mile at most. So I ended up 8th overall and 2nd in my age group. The FRB Team had a decent showing. We had 4 of the top 8 runners with Steve 3rd, Sasha 4th, and Adam W. 6th. The course was very flat but it was snowy and icy and at the 180 turn you had to come to a complete stop or you would have fallen on the ice. In fact some did fall that tried to run through the turn around. Overall a decent race but definetely not where I want to be right now. Off to the doctors next week to try and find out what is going on with the knee and maybe even get on the path to healing. It least it was fun to get out and represent the FRB and socialize.

Good job on the race Ted, despite the bad roads, dead legs and nursing the nagging aches/pains.

I can certainly relate to the situation you refer to where you don't feel like your going full speed but the brain/legs just won't go faster. Seems like this happens to me about ever 3rd race or so.

Good luck at the Doc's office.

AM - Overall a bad run day all around. Very easy super icy run today. Normal route and a major heat wave at 40'F so I was expecting good trail conditions. I couldn't have been more wrong. The snow that was on the trail had turned to ice and was covered with a layer of water from the warmer weather which made it about as bad as it could get. On the dry sections we could move but then had to slow to almost a walk on the icy sections. To top things off the knee was terrible today. It was as bad or worse today than it has ever been. I have a regular doctor appointment later today and will probably get an MRI and then tomorrow I have an appointment with a Chiropractor/Sports PT. So between the two I hope to try and figure this knee thing out. I am a bit nervous about the MRI as I am hoping it is not something too serious. So a down day today in many ways.

Went to the doctor today. Had a good talk with him as we discussed running as he is planning on doing his first marathon at Ogden this year. I told him about the FRB as well and he said he would check it out. He also saw Spirit of The Marathon the other day. He was interested in trying to find others that get together and run as it showed on the movie. I told him we had runners of all abilities and I was sure he could find others to run with from the blog in the Provo area. Anyway he thinks it looks like a soft tissue issue which is what I kind of suspected as well. He ordered an MRI and also gve me some prescription strength Naproxin to try instead of my current Ibuprofin treatments. I will hopefully find out tomorrow when my MRI will be. From there depending on what it shows I will either be recommended to a Orhtopedic Surgeon for further consult or if nothing really shows then I will be recommended to a Physical Therapist for further evaluation. Either way I just want to know whats going on so I can try and fix it. Keeping my fingers crossed for a best case scenario. At least my Doc was somewhat into running which made things nicer.

What I would like him to look at is my hip issues and see what he thinks. Hopefully I can get in fairly quickly for my MRI as well so I can figure this out and move forward with a plan to get healthy again. I still need to get with you and have you show me your scraping technique as well. I am just getting tired of not being able to run without pain.

AM - From bad to worse today. The knee was killing me today the entire run so I turned around after three miles and headed back. The pain was the worst it has ever been. The only way I can describe it is that it felt like someone was poking me in the knee with a knife every stride. The only other time I have been in this much pain while running was when I had a really bad stress fracture in college. So right now things are not looking good running wise. I may be reduced to cross training for awhile.

Looking back at my blogs I initially hurt my knee on November 15th. So it has been almost 11 weeks that I have had this problem. It is time to get it fixed and stop playing around.

AM - So I did my stretches, and drills along with push-ups & sit-ups etc... Then jogged to see how the knee felt. It still hurts so I jumped on the bike at the gym and rode for 40 minutes hard. I am really not into this cross training thing. I hope I can more motivated to do it as it just is not as fun or fullfilling as running. I tried the elipitical but it hurt the knee as well so I guess I need to stick to the bike for now. The only problem with the bike is my butt bone is sore from the seat.

On another note I am still waiting for my MRI to be scheduled. However, I went to see Dr. Brady for chiropractic work. I was actually very pleased (thanks Josse). He worked on my hip, back and knee and spent about an hour and a half really working me over. He thinks my knee problem may have been brought on by the hip. He was pretty surprised how tight my hip was. He did some deep tissue ART type work on the hip which was a bit painful and then he also did some acupuncture and electro therapy where he hooks a device up to the acupuncture needles and sends electric pulses deep into the hip area. This was very uncomfortable and I am not a big fan of needles so not much fun. It felt like someone was tapping on the muscles in the hip with a hammer as they twiched. He then did some ultrasound as well. If that wasn't enough he then stuck some more needles in my knee and did some more of the same along with more ultrasound. His approach might have scared some away but I am ready to get healthy so I was willing to give it a shot. He seems pretty sharp and he seems to understand athletes. He has worked on Maggie Chan and some other BYU runners in the past as well. He showed me several stretches to work on the hip as well. He truly seems like he wants to help fix the issues and help me get faster. His prices are very good compared to others I have tried and he does not seem like the type that wants to treat me forever. His approach is to get me healthy as quick as possible and then teach me how to keep things that way on my own. He did a few hip and back adjustments as well that actually made my back feel the best it has in a long time. I also noticed that the rest of the day and today the hip felt a lot looser. It is sore, but he said to expect that, but feels like it already has a bit better range of motion. He said I may not like some of the stuff he was going to do right now but eventually I will be thanking him for it. I hope he is right.

So far now I am in therapy and cross train mode. More to follow once I get the MRI and more treatments from Dr. Brady as well. I am not looking forward to more acupuncture but if it works I can deal with it. Besides Deena Kaster does it a couple times a week.

Wow, that sounds really involved. Seems like a lot of the bloggers are having issues brought on by problems in the hip area. This was Lybi's issue (piriformis), I was developing a little soreness in my piriformis caused by my pelvis being out, seems like there were others as well. I am amazed that a chiropractor was able to do all of that, plus work on you for about 1 1/2 hours. Mine does heat, electro stimulation and chiropractic, but no acupuncture, and not deep tissue massage. Good luck with a speedy recovery.

From josse on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 16:43:36

What's the news?

From ArmyRunner on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 18:13:13

Ok, so here is the update. Last week I decided to take a full week off and do nothing that would irritate the knee. I figured this would be good to do while waiting for the MRI results, etc... On Friday last week I went back to Dr. Brady and he worked on me knee for about an hour. More acupuncture, electro-therapy and ultrasound along with some ART and scraping, etc... The worst part was he found a very tender area on the knee and started to really work it. This was extremely painful but he thinks it is possibly a plica issue and if so he thinks he can make some progress with it. I was worried that the knee was going to be even worse, soreness wise after Friday’s treatment but it was actually a little better walking around. Then on Monday I went to get the MRI. Having never done this it was a weird experience as well. Much louder than I expected. Kind of like a small jack hammer sound for 20 minutes. They gave me the results on a disc so now I have some really cool picture of my left knee. The initial results indicate a clean MRI of the knee. So for now it does not look like I have any meniscus or ligament damage. The good news is no need for surgery but the bad news is they are not sure what is causing the problem. My plan from here is to start running indoors starting tomorrow for the rest of this week and see how things feel. If things are feeling better then next week I may start running outdoors again. I will continue to see Dr. Brady as well and hopefully he can help fix things up. So we will see how things go. It is depressing not being able to run so hopefully I can get going again soon.

From Adam RW on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 18:17:53

Thanks for the update and I'm glad you don't need surgery. Hopefully the week off did the trick!

From jtshad on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 18:19:16

Glad to hear about the results of the MRI! And if you Doc has some ideas to work on, that is also great news. Just take it easy and get over this injury. Taking the time now, in the thick of this crappy winter, will pay dividends later this year for your racing (and mental well being).

Are you still thinking of running in the Del Sol or are you going to take some time to get over this?

From josse on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 18:46:14

So I think this is what I had 2 years ago. But my doc called it planker band syndorome but from what I read on plica sounds the same. I think you where on the mend and probably reinjured it doing the races. It took me a couple of months to get over it. I got it a couple of weeks before SG marathon. I ran the marathon and then took a week off and started back with 3 days a week for 2 weeks. Then I did 4 times a week for 2 weeks. Then after that I was up to 5 days a week. I had it in both of my knees.

I remember my doctor said it was just a matter of the inflamation going down before the pain would go. I used an ultraviolet light I bought that is suppose to help decrease inflamation (you can borrow it if you would like)

I also think daily scrapping would help with increasing the blood flow to the area (which also helps decrease inflamation, I have a tool you can use). Another thing I would be doing is ice/heat on the knee. I bought this wonderful thing at walmart. It is a strap you can put ice or heat packs in so you can strap it on and go about your business. I believe it was under 10 bucks. This may sound all overwellming but I know it will speed up the healing process.

And one more thing no fast stuff untill you have absolutly no pain!!!!! Let me know if I can help or if I am being to overbearing;)

From MichelleL on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 19:12:24

Just checking in and wanted to say just reading about your injury makes my injuries hurt. I am glad no surgery is on the horizon. I too abhor cross training and was always amazed at Josse's ability to cross train for 60 minutes or more a day. I would think you would want to suck it up and do at least 60 a day.

From krash man on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 17:28:30

I know what your going through. I just came down with some knee pain. I did the rest thing and now I am testing it. I can run on it but it doesn't feel right. I have a Dr. appointment next week. My pain is in the front of my knee. It feels like it is in the joint. Where is your pain?

From ArmyRunner on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 20:57:00

Josse,

I will take any help I can get. I wouldn't mind borrowing the scrapping tool and having you show me how to use it. Just let me know and I can try and pick it or something.

Krash,

My pain has been on the outside of my left knee around the joint area. I ahve been dealing with it for almost three months now. I was probably not aggressive enough trying to treat it early on. I have a hard time taking time off and probably just delayed the healing process and made matters worse. Not to mention I raced on it when I should not have. I have a tendency to overdue things at times and am just hard headed that way. I am not sure I will ever learn.

From then on it hurt a little of and on but not too bad. So a good sign that it feels a lot betterthan last week. Progress but not as much as I would like. 5 miles in 35:25. I think I will stick to 5 miles a day the rest of this week indoors and see how things feel. Hi Ted,

If nothing seems to work, try do the following:

1)Stand both feet flat(wide apart as your body) on the ground.Put both arms at your hip and body upright, eyes look straight.Bend both knee to 90 degree and stay there for 30 seconds. Then straighten both knees to relax, but remain standing in the same position, and

2)close both knees together, and try to bend at 90 degree and keep body upright and eyes look straight, for 30secs.Then straighten both knees to relax, but remain standing in the same position, and

3)Stand on both tip toes(heels high off the ground) and close both knees together and bend both knees at 90 degree and try to keep body upright and eyes look straight, for 30 secs.

1)2)3) is one repeation, start with 5 reps first, and three to four times a day for three days(can do this before and after the run. Then increase to 60 secs each time the knees bend, for another three days. Then increase to 90 secs each time the knees bend for another three days...

All the best and speedy recovery:-)

Running wise I think I can make it through but feel bad that I will not be running as fast as I should and feel like I am letting the team down in these regards. As long as we still win I guess it won't matter too much in the big picture.

Choon Huat,

Thanks for the strength exercises. I do need to give this a try as I know that my left quad has become weaker due to the injury and me favoring the right leg. I hope running in Singapore is going well for you.

AM - Well I was miserably sick for the last four days in bed. I have not beeen that sick in a long time. I have been on a liquid diet since thursday and still am but feeling a lot better. The blessing in disguise is when I ran 6 miles this morning the knee felt better than it has in at least a month. Still not 100% but much better. Pretty busy at work lately so not much blogging and being sick and injured does not help matters.

AM - Easy 6 with Sasha and Josse this morning. The trail was a bit icy and slick but other than that it was a balmy 33'F. The knee felt pretty good again today even a little better than yesterday. So the knee seems to be on the mend, hopefully. Now I just need to shake the last of the sickness. I was still on a mostly soft food diet yesterday but things are feeling better each day.

Glad to hear the knee is improving. Now get well from the sickness so we don't catch anything when we stay with you!

See you tomorrow.

Great to hear you feeling better. I've had some of this crude over the weekend to and still have a sore throat. Almost all of my co-works have some form of this sickness.

I'm glad your knee is doing well, and good enough to run Del Sol.

From jtshad on Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 11:25:57

Both you guys get better by tomorrow...I have been lucky enough to avoid this late season sickness (knock on wood) and I don't want it now :-)

Jeff:

I'm pretty much over it just a little sore throat when I wake up and that's it. My wife was sick with it all weekend along with a migraine and vomiting. My daughter has missed the last two days of school with it.

It's not a concern heading into the race. My concern is how my racing speed is going to be without any intensity training because of the achilles. I want to meet that projected 5:42 average pace time for the three legs.

From ArmyRunner on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 17:22:21

I think the plan is to run at 5:30am from my house for an easy 6 miles. It should be Jeff, Kory, Steve A. and I. My address is 3153 Navajo Lane in Provo if you wish to join us.

From josse on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 17:24:24

Can you give me directions I don't think I would find it without.

From ArmyRunner on Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 17:39:54

Take center street in Orem to the east and just keep going. It turns into Foothill Dr. and then turns into Navajo Ln. Look here at G-maps link as well.

First day of the Del Sol Relay. After sleeping not so good we all headed over to Lybi's house to hang out and wait for our time to depart to the start of the Del Sol Relay. We met up with the rest of the team at the start of the race in Wickenburg, AZ and hung out waiting for the race to start. We started at 6:00pm with 5 other teams which was the last start time. The first teams started at 9:00am. I will let everyone else comment on their specific legs but I was in van #2 with Adam, Kory, Sasha, Jeff and Steve. I was really concerned that I was not going to be able to run anywhere close to my predicted times and was very concerned that I would struggle to run even close to 6:00 pace. Besides the fact that I have not been able to hardly run at all the last month I came down with the flu last weekend and my throat had not recovered and I was feeling pretty trashed overall. I really did not want to let the team down so I was pretty nervous about how my body would respond and perform. So when it was my turn to run at about 9:00pm I was not very excited but I was determined to not let anyone down. So I took the hand off from Adam, who ran very fast, and just tried to relax and tell myslef to run hard and just kept pushing thinking to myself to just push no matter what and at least make it through one leg with a decent time and try and be as close to my predicted time as possible. My first leg was suppossed to be 4 miles with the first 2 fairly flat and the last 2 on a slight uphill. The total distance measured short at 3.85 miles. The toughest part about this leg was teh fact that there was 3 cattle guards and crossing cattle guards at night running sub 6:00 pace is a little scary. My first mile was 5:48 which was 12 seconds ahead of predicted pace so I was happy and although not feeling goo just focused on pushing and trying to stay ahead of pace as long as possible. The 2nd mile was a 5:38 and now I was 34 seconds ahead of pace and glad I had put a cushion before starting the climb. This is where the real climb began and to top it off I turned into a pretty decent headwind. This made things hurt and the 3rd mile was a 6:19 but I was still 15 seconds ahead of predicted and hanging on. The last split was 5:04 for .85 miles which is just under 6:00 pace so I ended up with 22:51 for 3.95 miles and about 15 seconds ahead of predicted pace wise and 1:09 ahead of actual predicted time. I handed off to Kory and jumped back in the van. At this point I was not sure how the rest of the night would go as I was feeling wiped out and my throat was killing me. The knee survived but it was a bit stiff after getting out of the van and walking around and jogging at the next exchange. So my next leg was after midnight so you can read about it on my next days entry.

Ok, the race goes on. After leg one complete for Van 1 we had a about a 5 minute lead and then when we handed off to Van 2 we had about a 7 minute lead so we were able to add a couple minutes to the lead Van 1 gave us which was a good sign. We were still not comfortable at this point though becasue a 7 minute lead is not impossible to overcome. So we headed off to exchange point 18 and tried to get some rest while we waited for our tunrs again. I ended up getting about an hour of sleep on the ground sharing a couple of sleeping bags with Adam and Jeff. When Van 1 arrived and handed off to Adam this time we found out that they had run very fast and now handed us a 17+ minute lead. This was lead by an incredible performance by Logan where he PRd at 5 and 10k during his 7 mile leg splitting a 10k in 30:30 at about 2:00am on his second leg. So after Adam took off it was time to drop me off. I was still very concerned with how I would perform as things had not really improved as far as how I felt. During my warm-up the legs were dead and the throat was still swollen. This leg for me would be 3 miles of gentle down, about 1% with a flatter section in the middle of mile 2. So I figured just go out hard and survive again. My predicted pace was suppossed to be about 5:30 so anything clsoe to this would be great. The first mile I just dug deep and focused on forum and leg turn over and hit the split at 5:15. I was pretty happy with this and although it flet hard I still thought I could at least maintain sub 5:30 if I just kept pushing. The 2nd mile started to flatten out and feel tougher but I still hit a 5:25 split. With 1 mile to go the pain was pretty bad and I felt like I could barely breath but just kept hammering knowing the finish was near. At one point I lost track of where I was running in the dark on the road and the next thing I knew I was in the middle of the highway on the double yellow line. Good thing no cars were coming at the time. The leg was only suppossed to be 3.1 miles but when I hit my 3rd mile split in 5:20 and the exchange was still aways off I knew it would be long. So 3 miles in 16:00 and handed off at 3.2 miles in 16:59 and under projected time again averaging 5:20 per mile. This was a great leg for me in the condition I was in. At the end my head and stomach were spinning and I dry heaved a few times and jumped in the van. The stomach hurt for some time after this leg. Now it was time to move on. Everyone else continued to run well and we handed off to Van 1 again this time with a 22 minute lead so we added another 5 minutes to our lead. We were now off to our last resting point. After a verys hort rest, probably less than 30 minutes of sleep, it was our turn to run again. We had no idea what our lead was at this point but we were now focused on a new goal to try and break 17 hours. I am off to the airport for another trip and will continue later the rest of the story.

Ok, after a week away I am back in town and might as well finish the story for the last leg. My last leg started on a pretty steep incline for the first mile, although I was glad I did not have Adam's leg as he had over 3 miles of grueling uphill to hand off to me. I was feeling very trashed by this point and just wanted to get through this last leg as best as I could. During the warm-up te knee was very stiff and I was concerned as it did not seem to loosen up much. I figured I would just hammer the uphill mile as best as I could and then put it in cruises control for the 2 down hill miles to the exchange. There was a bit of a headwind as well so that did not help much along with the fact that the heat was now becoming a factor. So overall not a fun leg at all but I held it together ok. My splits were 6:01 on the uphill mile which was faster than I expected. Then the down started and I was able to hit a 5:37 2nd mile and a 5:31 3rd mile. A little dodging traffic across the highway to get to the handoff but I was very glad it was over and also happy that I was only 3 seconds off of predicted time so I held together. Overall this was an awesome experience and I had a blast. I will pay with a bum knee but it was worth it.

I am going to keep running and see if it gets worse and I guess it is back to the doctor again as well. I am starting to wonder if I am going to get over this anytime soon. Early run with Sasha, Josse, Jeff, and Adam. I was able to get in 6 miles but still painful. Yesterday after running the knee was killing all day and today it has been pretty sore all day as well but not quite as bad as yesterday. I have not been using anti-infl. meds this week as after being on prescription stuff for a month I think I need a break. That might be why the pain has been a little worse throughout the day than before. I will continue with the 6 mile runs for now and hopefully get back in to the doc for another visit soon. If I need surgery or need to get it scoped I would prefer to just get it done, in fact I am almost hoping for that at this point as it seems it would be better than not knowing and this thing just not healing up. At this point I do not think it is going to heal up on its own with just rest but I may be wrong. If all else fails then it may mean I have to end up taking a much longer period of time off. It is starting to look like 2008 is going to be a loss running wise for me.

From James W on Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 20:27:12

Sorry to hear your knee is still causing you grief. Is there any chance of this being referred pain from a problem in your pelvis or back, leading to a compensation by your legs? In any case, I agree with Steve and Clay - better to get it checked out again by an orthoped (and preferably one who deals with athletes) than to let it continue. I seem to recall that there are several orthopedic surgeons who work with the BYU football team that may offer additional insights that a regular orthoped may not have. In any case, good luck rehabbing . . .

Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. Ted, I think you are getting near the point where continuing to try to train through this thing might be a little crazy. Take it from a guy who's done a lot of crazy when it comes to running!

I've had a couple bouts with knee pain (patellofemoral pain syndrome) over the last few years, once in each knee at different times. In both cases, attempting to train through it only made it worse, and the only way to get it to go away was to completely stop running. In addition, just ceasing activity wasn't quite enough, as it didn't completely get better until I actively pursued a physical therapy program.

IMO, it's usually better to just bite the bullet, accept the total loss of fitness, and focus on getting better while fixing whatever inherent problem your body has. You can then come back better and stronger than ever. Rehab may be the way to go on this. I haven't been reading your blog extremely closely, but it seems like this has been going on for a while. Better to take two months now than miss a year.

From Nick on Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 21:41:57

I definitely agree with Paul. I just got over a partially torn vastus medialus that led to some patellar distracking, and that seemed really stubborn. It would hurt anytime I had my knee bent at all, and even swimming made it painful. It took a good four to five weeks of rest to make it "run-able" again. If I could have gone back, I would have stopped running once it felt it. I tried to run through it and I was definitely not going to work. Keep your spirits up! I know it's hard but time off now prevents a long time off in the future.

From Superfly on Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 21:52:08

Keep your chin up Ted. At this point none of the options must sound that good. I have never been through any real injury. But I think Paul is a great example of how to deal with it.

Not good. I have been too busy to get back to the doctor but now that school is out I am going to head back to the doctor and get to an orhtopedic doc to get a second opinion. The knee is not healing even with over a month of no running. So this week I hope to see the doc and see what the next steps are to get on the road to healing. Physical therapy or surgery or both. Either way I am open to anything at this point.

Ok, so I figured I would start blogging again even if I am not able to really run without pain still. Unfortunately after over a month off the knee is not better. In fact it has actually gotten a little worse if anything. It pretty much hurts every single step when I run and it even hurts when I bike. So it is back to the doctor today and I am going to ask for a referral to an orthopedic specialist to try and discover the cause of this problem. Now that school is out I have a little more time to try and work this out once and for all.

I did run an easy 2.5 miles this morning and also did about 100 push-ups and sit-ups. I wore a knee brace but it did not seem to help much as the knee hurt every step of the way. I mainly wanted to run this morning just to see where the knee was at and also make sure it is a little sore when I see the doctor today. I know this sounds funny but I want some soreness so the doctor can isolate wear the issue is a little easier.

Thanks for the support from those that have sent words of encouragement while I have been off the blog. More to follow even if I only blog push-ups and sit-ups I will try and blog how things are going each day.

Another easy run. 3.5 miles with the same pain. Also did about 60 push-ups and sit-ups.

Went to the doctor on Monday and he referred me to an Orthopedic Surgeon as I expected. I will see the Ortho on Wednesday afternoon and see what he thinks. My doc thinks it could be one of a couple things or a combination. It could be a torn/damaged ACL or based on the muscle atrophy it could be that I have some sort of spinal damage that has caused nerve damage that is causing issues with the nerve signal to that leg. He debated wether to get a back MRI right away but deceided to let the Ortho look at it first and order any tests he thinks are necessary.

Off to see the Ortho later today.

Ok, back from the Ortho. He is supposed to be one of the best in Utah. He is the team ortho for BYU. After checking me out and listening to my symptoms he is almost certain that I have a meniscal tear. Scoping the knee (arthoscopic surgery) to find the tear and then doing a Meniscectomy is what it will take to fix it. So surgery is the next step. The good news is that depending on how bad and the location of the tear he has had some athletes back to full training as soon as 10 days. The worst case is 3-4 weeks. However, I am leaving for Fort Knox in a couple weeks and won't be back until 3 July so we could not schedule the surgery until the 10th of July. If all goes well maybe I can be back training again by the 1st of August. So until then I will just keep up my easy jogging routine as he did not think I would cause any significant damage as long as I took it easy and as long as the pain does not get any worse.

From James W on Wed, May 07, 2008 at 21:08:37

Glad to hear you were able to determine the cause of the problem. My wife's cousin, who is a PT, was recently diagnosed with the same issue and is also having surgery to take care of it. I agree with Michelle - try calling regularly, or see if you can get on a cancellation list to get the surgery done before you head out - then you have that much less time to wait before you can start back up again with your training.

The up was ok, still normal knee pain but doable. The downs killed. I probably over did it but since I am having surgery anyway I didn't really care and I wanted to run with the group so I did.

Just came across your blog. Hope everything goes well with your surgery. I can't tell if your surgeon is Jackson (there are a few that work with BYU), but if it is I would be cautious and get a second opinion. Rosenburg in Park City is supposed to be world class (Tiger Woods goes to him).

Ran with students again. Plan was only to go a few miles with them but I couldn't resist and ran the whole way trying to push the faster ones. We ended up running 10 miles in 75 minutes with the middle 7 miles at 7:10 average and the last four miles sub 7:00. It pretty much sucked as I am not in very good shape to do this but I was determined to stay with the top two guys. The knee hurt but not as bad as I would have expected.

Hey I hurt my knee and have been refered to an orth surgen. Josse told me to ask who you are seeing. I got a list from the doctor I saw of who I could go to so I was wondering if the one you see is on that list.

I am seeing Dr. Kurt Kimball he is supposed to be one of the best in Utah. If you need his number let me know. I am scheduled for surgery on the 10th of July but am still hoping that a small miracle occurs and the pain goes away before then.

Ran with cadets again. Easy mile warm-up and then paced them during track workout followed by an easy mile cool down. Ont he track I ran 6x 400s in about 1:25 each and 1x800 in 2:50. Still have knee pain but I ran without the brace today and the knee pain seemed a bit less than normal. So no miracle healing yet but I am still not counting it out yet as the surgery is not until July 10th so there is still time for a miracle. Also did about 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups. I am getting in pretty good shape upper body wise at least.

Doing ok. Just not really wanting to admit that I need surgery on July 10th. Like I mentioned above I am trying to run and see if I can strengthen things up before surgery so I can recover faster afterwards and hoping at the same time by doing so something will change and I will suddenly be healed. Either way running with pain is better than not running at all right now. The not running was far worse than running every step with pain. I really miss not being able to run and train. I have not been as active on the blog for that reason because it just makes me miss it even more. I guess I am jealous of all of you healthy runners right now.

2.100.000.000.000.000.000.002.10

Ok, a strange thing happened this morning. I ran 2 miles in 13:30 with cadets and for the first time in months the knee really did not bother me. I felt it a little but not the normal every step pain that I have been experiencing for months on end every day. So maybe something has happened. I have a theory but we will wait and see if it pans out. If so then I may still get the miracle I had been praying for and not end up with surgery. If not then I am still ok with surgery in July if required.

So my theory is this: We were in Moab hiking a lot at Arches National Park this weekend and I was really stressing the knee quite a bit with a lot of climbing over rough terrain. During our last hike on Sunday evening in the "Fiery Furnace" of all places I was hopping from rock to rock across a large crevasse and felt a severe sharp pain in my knee that was the worst pain I have felt in it to date. It was bad enough that I was gritting my teeth in pain for a couple minutes and wondering if I was going to be able to continue the hike and make my way back out. After that the knee was sore but I managed to continue and make it out of the "Fiery Furnace" ok. So today when I started running I noticed immediately that the knee was not hurting like it normally did. I could feel the knee but not anywhere close to like before. My theory is that when I made this jump and felt the pain that it was the torn piece of meniscus tearing completely off. I am not sure if this is possible but I imagine it is since a torn meniscus is a flap of torn tissue/cartilage and the pain is normally caused by the torn piece interfearing with normal knee movement. During surgery they go in and cut this piece off to smooth things out and restore normal movement. So I wonder if this is possible? I guess I will find out as I continue to run over then next month and see if the pain completely goes away or not. Either way it was nice to run a couple miles and not be in so much pain. So this weekend I was thrown into the "Fiery Furnace" and came out better than when I went in!

Also did 175 push-ups and 175 sit-ups.

Well another decent day with much less knee pain than previously. Still some minor pain but much more tolerable. I ran a track workout with our BYU students. We did 3x1 mile repeats with a 800 jog rest between. Repeats were as follows: 6:10, 6:04, 5:58. They all felt very comfortable and relaxed and the knee was ok, not good but ok and that is a huge step forward from the last 5 months. Afterwards did 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups. Adam also joined us for the workout and afterwards I helped him work on some drills to improving his running stride and hopefully his overall speed. So two days in a row where running actually was not a very painful event for a change.

Ran with the LTs that I am working with. We did 10x1min hard with 1 min easy rest. The 10x1min was at about 5:30-40 pace. As I sped up that is when I could feel the knee a little more. Did 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups and 10 pull-ups before the run.

Ok, I have been back in town since 3 July trying to catch up at work. I have been running everyday and the knee pain has been minimal but still present. So, although I have been trying to talk myself out of knee surgery I am going through with it today. I head in this afternoon and go under at around 5:00pm. I can't eat or drink anything all day so I will be starving. Maybe this is to distract me from the thought of the surgery. I am hoping that the Dr. finds the issue and is able to fix it. I guess I will know soon enough.

So today I did a track workout as my last run. I bet their is not many people who can say they did a track workout the morning of their knee surgery. The knee was ok overall for the workout. Still some nagging but very minimal. Again, hopefully just my mind playing tricks on me trying to pretend nothing is wrong. So I did 8x400 repeats with a 400 jog between. 400s were all between 1:15 - 1:16 except the last one was in 1:12. Not bad considering the shape I am in. The 1:12 felt a lot tougher than it should have.

Hopefully, all goes well today and I am able to bounce back quickly. Supposedly if all goes well I can be back running again in 7 to 10 days. I would love to be back at it next week. I will try and post some information after the surgery as soon as I feel up to it.

Below and on the following days blogs I will be blogging about my recovery from microfracture surgery. As a runner I did not find much in the way of others stories of recovery so if you happen to stumble across this feel free to follow my progress. If you happen to have microfracture surgery and have any questions feel free to ask or share your experiences as well.

Well the surgery is complete and it is not good news. I did not have torn meniscus. In fact a torn meniscus would have been great news compared to what was found. Just about anything would have been better. I had cartilage damage where a section of cartilage about 1cm was damaged all the way to the bone. In this case the only chance at healing and recovery was a procedure called microfracture surgery. If I had continued to run with this the cartilage damaged would have continued to get worse until I would have needed a knee replacement surgery at some point. This procedure has the rough areas of cartilage cleaned up around the damaged area and then the bone has several holes (microfractures) made in it so that bone marrow (stem cells) and blood seep out of the bone and in the process allow for new cartilage to form in the cartilage hole. However, this takes a long time and while this process is going on the leg cannot be allowed to bear weight. So the Doctor says I have to be on crutches for 4-6 weeks and put no weight on the leg at all during this time period. The best case scenario for a full recovery is 4-6 months minimum before running or doing any impact type activities. The most likely cause was my car accident as this is normally a trauma associated injury. I am on percoset which is a major pain killer. So right now I am pretty down. At this point I have a long road to recovery ahead and even then it is no guarantee that I can return to the marathon again. My doctor feels my chances for a full recovery are good but it will not be easy. I will start some physical training next week to work on keeping some range of motion in the knee without any weight bearing or resistance. The doctor has called for 4-6 hours a day of spinning on a bike with no resistance whatsoever. I am not sure how I will manage to get that many hours in but I am going to go look for a good spin bike tomorrow as the only way I will get in anywhere near enough hours is if I have a spin bike in my house and I spend every spare minute on it. Well, all I can ask is for everyone to keep me in your prayers as things are not so hot right now. For now I am sidelined with the hope that it is not permanent.

Ted, so sorry to hear about the knee situation. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for sure. Please keep blogging and giving us updates and let me know any way I can help you or your family out.

As, you might know I'm a pretty big basketball fan. I know Jason Kidd from the Dallas Mavericks and also playing on this year's Olympic team had microfracture surgery, I also think maybe Amare Stoudemire from Phoenix and Kenyon Martin from the Denver Nuggets have had the procedure done.

I'm not so sure about any distance runners, but it would be interesting to know how many have had this surgery done.

In the mean time, keep the faith. Paul had a really good post a few weeks ago, talking about running, injuries, life and putting it all into the eternal perspective of things. Hopefully, everything will workout for you with time.

Hey I'm really sorry to hear about your injury. The only advice I can offer is to try and keep as positive an attitude as possible. Injury can be very tough to deal with, but I believe a good attitude is the best weapon you have to defeat it. Keep your head up - I'll keep you in my prayers.

Ted, so sorry to hear about things. But of all the people I know, you are one of the toughest and can overcome this! Keep positive and know that we are all thinking of you.

From Dale on Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 17:39:52

The good news is that you went thru with the surgery, they found the problem, and you're now officially on the road to recovery. You're an Army officer, which means you're tougher than the average patient, in good physical and mental shape, and have a good likelihood of meeting or exceeding the best-case recovery estimates. The Army's got a vested interest in getting you healthy again so make the spin time a priority, both at work and at home. Focus on doing your physical therapy to give your body the best chance to heal. Show the physical therapist what you're made of and get take-home assignments to work on if they'll allow it. Most importantly, don't hold yourself back thinking about the bad but embrace the good news....you've been struggling with this issue for months and now you've finally got a fighting chance at getting things fixed once and for all. Use all your life memories from the *really* tough times (like being deployed in Iraq) to help you thru this one.

I'm certain you can make it through this and will come out strong and healthy on the other side. You just have to believe it too. Time to get to work!

All,

Thank you so much for the words of supoort and encouragement. The last couple of days has been tough. I have second guessed myself on the surgery but then I keep reminding myself that it really doesn't matter at this point. All that matters is that I put 100% effort into recovery and returning stronger than ever. It is scary not knowing what lies ahead but I am willing to do whatever it takes to get back to being healthy again. Thanks again for the support and encouragement as it does help. For those of you out there that struggle to get out the door for a run just use me as your motivation as I would give anything to head out the door for a run right now. Getting used to crutches is not my idea of fun. I will try and write updates on my progress. I sit down with the Dr. next week and he will show me pictures from the surgery, which should be interesting.

Hi Ted, I am so sorry to hear about this.

Did you ever meet Amy Barrow in Nashville? Perhaps inspirational - she had double hip replacement 3 years ago because of osteoarthritis and has since been running 18:30 5K's, 1:29 1/2's and 3:24 marathons at 51 years old ...

Her doctor didn't/doesn't know what to do with her - and I don't think they had any idea that someone could run like that after a surgery like that.

If anyone else can do something like that - you can! I will be thinking about you the next time I am "dreading" my run.

Dear Army Runner,

I don't know you and I am very new to the blog, but wish you the best of luck. I have had two knee surgeries over the past 5-6 years and am finally back into running (partly due to laziness). I appreciate your comments because I have taken for granted the fact that I can even run again. My doctor told me about 18 months ago, "Let's see how many more years we can get outta this knee...." YIKES! I feel your pain and when I am "dreading" a run, I will pull my head out and go enjoy. Also, props to you for serving... my brother is in Army reserve (he went thru the ROTC program @ BYU a few years back) and is serving his second time in the war, (first Iraq, now Afghanistan). GO USA!!! My advice to you......DO NOT PUT PRESSURE ON THE LEG!! That is partly why I had to have the second surgery!! Best of Luck and keep us all posted.

From walter on Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:15:21

Hey Ted, I just got wind of your pain! Wow, I have to tell you not to let your doctors prognosis keep you down. You are better than that! Did they mention anything about walking in a pool? After my surgeries from a car wreck, I did pool therapy everyday for an hour and it helped keep my muscles moving and you should try or ask about it. My doctor told me I would never be able to run again so I think they do that to give you some motivation. Do spin alot also. Thats all I did for my therapy to get back into running. You'll find that you'll be back at it in no time. Keep your head up and if you need to break your boredom call me and I come down and bring some board games over or something. lol I did lots of puzzles, model cars, oh and lots of I love Lucy.

Hello, I need some help from someone ASAP please!

I went to have an arthoscopic surgery and I woke up to a microfracture!!! My whole season is ruined - I am a pro tennis player and I have been very depressed the past few months. I have had the surgery 3 months ago and I still cannot walk without pain. I was not told not to put weight on leg for 6 weeks and never used the CPM machine. I was permitted to play tennis tournament after the 7th week and I have to retire after the 4th match because of pain. I have been resting since then for 6 weeks now and I still have pain even to walk!!

Can someone tell me if mictofracture can hurt more in the 3rd month post opperation or did I ruin any chance of healing because I played on it too soon??? Went to some other ortho's and they said to do more therapy for 6 weeks because my quad is very weak so I will do that but I am so scared that's not the case and I ruined the healing process by playing too soon!! Can someone please advice?? My email is Oren67@aol.com.

Thanks, Oren

Best of luck with the knee and rehab from microfracture.

From Mike Warren on Tue, Aug 05, 2008 at 09:10:42

Ted, your story is me to a tee. When I had my knee surgery they thought I had a torn meniscus. My surgery was exactley the same as yours, not as expected. I was very angry and depressed when the Doc came to the recovery room and said oh, by the way, 6 weeks on crutches. Just take this time to relax and enjoy other things in life. The thing that helped my recovery the most, was excercises in our pool. You will come back from this. I had never even run until after this surgery. One of the docs told me I could never run long distances and that motivated me to start. With your experience in running, you already have a leg up, "no pun intended". Hang in there and use this to your advantage, to come back stronger than ever.

I had microfracture surgery in October last year. I had the same as many, went in for miniscus, came out with microfracture. I have been told NOT to run, but I am reading more that you actually can recover. I have been afraid to run, and have been riding my bike a LOT. I have started running in deep sand (I live in Ft Lauderdale) and that has been encouraging. I am just starting to run on pavement to see how I feel. I was extremely conservative with my recovery, and I'm hoping I can start running again to do a 5K sometime. I'm not a marathoner, I just run to keep in shape. Does anyone else say I should NOT run?

From ArmyRunner on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 23:52:23

Brad,

I think you should listen to your body primarily. By everything my doctor and physical therapist have said they are supportive and optimistic of my eventually running again and hopefully even doing marathons. However, slow and patient is the key according to them. Doctor and PT both feel I should not even consider trying to run for at least 4-6 months and this is dependent on how things progress. So as long as you take it very slow and gradual and listen t your body you should be able to try and run again. Probably run a little and walk a little trading off at first just to feel things out. Best of luck and let us know how things go.

i had microfracture surgery on Friday and I found this blog searching for others who've had this procedure!

I was told I only need to be on crutches for two weeks along with 4 hrs of CPM. has anyone else received similar instructions?

I was a runner before i was sidelined by knee pain and hope to get back to running once I've recovered.

Army runner-just curious, how many days after surgery did you have to wait until you could get on the bike?

From ArmyRunner on Mon, Sep 08, 2008 at 23:43:56

Travis,

Two weeks seems a bit on the short side from everything I have rad and been told. My doctor had me on no weight bearing with crutches for 4 weeks followed by 2 weeks of partial weight bearing only as a slow transition back to walking. If you read my subsequent blog days you can see my progress. Most of what I have read says anywhere from 4 weeks to 8 weeks of no weight bearing. My doctor allowed my to get on a spin bike as soon as I could which for me was basically on day 3. However, it was with no resistance whatsoever and very slowly. I think this was a key to how fast I got my range of motion back. Don't be afraid to ask the doctor questions and more importantly make sure you get a physical therapist that has dealt with microfracture before as this will be important. I hope this helps.

From Brad on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 23:36:31

Travis,

I had the same as armyrunner. 4 weeks of non-weight bearing. Then it was slow, but I got on the bike probably after 8 weeks, and it was probably the best therapy. The bike is EXTREMELY important in getting your range of motion back. It took me a good 6 months before I could bend it completely. Like armyrunner says, patience is key. It WILL take a while, but it gets back. I'm starting to run slowly. It's mostly just a lack of confidence after so much time not running. I just don't want to ruin what I had done...

I moved to biking, hiking, elliptical, etc. 3 month ago I felt pain in my left knee and I ignored it. recently while in china walking the great wall my knee gave out and I fell to the ground. upon my trip back to the u.s I had an MRI. It is good to hear someone else is trying to run again. How long since your surgery? I am hoping to try and start jogging sometime between 4 and 6 months but like you do not want to rush things and cause any damage to the healing process. I constantly worry if I am doing too much as it is.

scottsdalemick,

I was pretty nervous as well and even as I was waiting for surgery I was almost wanting to not go through with it. However, I am hopeful that in the long run I will be able to run pain free again. I have never had any surgery, broken bones etc and have anxiety thinking of the procedure. Thanks for your insight. Also, anyone elses experiences would be VERY welcome as I am in unchartered territory. THANKS ALL !

From Travis on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 14:03:55

Armyrunner,

I am 4 weeks into my 6 week stint on crutches. after visiting the doctor for the post op he confirmed that i would need a total of 6 weeks. at first he considered two weeks due to the small size of my lesion but in the end decided to play in on the safe side.

Anyways, my question to you and to anyone else concerns small missteps. There have been a few times where I have taken a misstep and found myself catching my balance with my affected leg. My question I guess is this: Would a few bad missteps here and there ruin the chance for the microfracture to work? Your thoughts or experiences?

From ArmyRunner on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 17:21:30

Travis,

I understand your concern as I was worried about the same type of thing early in my recovery as my kids caused me to bear weight once or twice and even jumped on my knee one day and had me in severe pain. However, so far so good as I don't think these small events have caused any recovery issues. However, it is a long slow process. Many times I have been discouraged over the last three months. However, it has been 13 weeks for me now and until this week things were not even close to normal. This week has been my best week since the surgery. My knee has felt more normal this week than it has since before the surgery. It has given me encouragement that things are working and that I will be able to routine to running again. The last couple weeks I was still concerned and discouraged at times. So be patient and understand that it may take a long time and that you will have those days that you really wonder if things are working and if you will ever run again. I am starting to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel but it has taken a me awhile to get to that point.

Best of luck and God Bless.

Not to sound like a broken record but I too went in for meniscus repair surgery and woke up to the microfracture, 6-8 wks on crutches song from my dr. Lucky for me I am not a skier otherwise I'd be pretty bummed! I did cross-train (swim, bike, run) however, and really miss all of that.

One question I had was about rehab. My doc is of the school that one should try to be on the exercise bike up to an hour/day within 2 weeks after surgery. I think he's pretty aggressive. Anyhow, I asked him about the CPM and he said forget that; instead I should try to reverse the atrophy of the quads, hams, calves and get on the bike. (The CPM is 100% passive so doesn't reduce muscle atrophy).

I was up to 12 minutes on the bike (which was a huge accomplishment considering how badly my calve hurt from swelling after the first week) until a couple of days ago when I felt a sharp pain in the area I suspect the microfracture was performed. I told my doc and he said to take a couple of days off and then ease my way back into it. Seems like mixed signals...?

I am willing to be patient and can stand not rushing back into my mini triathlons, but am struggling to find a balance between "rest" and "rehab". Any advice out there? If I feel the pain should I just back off entirely or try to suck it up and push through (which is my natural tendency, albeit not always the smartest).

From anita on Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 18:18:16

At my first post op I had already had 4 of my 6 mishaps and my Doc put me in a wheelchair but I have to go up steps to get in my house lost my balance and fell backwards causing me to but weight on my leg by the time I got in the house I stumbled again before I could get in my wheelchair. What do y'all think, am I doomed?

I will be having microfracture surgery in a week. I understand the area effected is in a non-weight bearing area of my knee. I have been told 4-6 weeks on crutches with a lockable knee braze. Did you have to wear a braze? Thanks for any info.

From Meredith on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 20:53:09

I just stumbled upon this website and I really wish I saw this a few months back when I had my first knee done with microfracture surgery. Much like all the stories I read I went in for one thing (loose pieces of cartilage) and came out with a lot of other things including microfracture surgery. I'm getting ready for the same procedure to occur on my other knee (left)- that is I"m assuming i'll have microfracture surgery. the symptoms are the same as the Right knee so i'm preparing for the worst case scenario. And by doing so i'm working on strength training, spinning, swimming and adding yoga into my routine. This way i'm sure to have a speedy recovery. I was 4wks on crutches with the Right Knee and I had a very fast recovery and I owe it all to being in good shape to begin with and I got on the bike for spinning 2x/wk (45min classes with no resistance). This time for my left knee i'd like to continue that routine post op.

I too am very nervous about my future as a runner. I'm a distance runner so I have now started searching for other people like myself that have started to run after this type of surgery. So I thank you for showing me there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Best of luck to everyone. And to the two questions above my post- I had mishaps and put weight on my leg, just try to be careful though. I was very very conservative with my post-op. And no i did not have to wear a brace- they wanted me to move my knee and get a good range of motion.

From Jason on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 04:43:03

Hey, Im 20 years old, and had lateral meniscal repair+ microfracture 4 weeks ago.

Wanted to ask how long it took you guys until you were able to bend the knee completely? -I also started putting weight on the leg early, but then stopped, and resumed using crutches. I hope this did not mess up too much.

From anita on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 23:53:55

brian, yes i have to use a lockable brace the only time i don't wear it is at pt and when i'm in the cpm. i'm 16 days out now, i work really hard at not applying any weight on my knee but i have learned that a small amount is necessary. be sure when you are up and around that you keep your brace locked and do your physical therapy. good luck. jason, i can bend my knee 90 degrees already without pain, but i have not purposely put weight on my knee,my physical therapist say if i did any damage to the microfracture then i will have pain when bending and applying weight. so far i don't have pain when bending, so i feel pretty good that i'm doing ok. if your not bending your knee much or if your having pain when you try you gotta talk to your doctor because if you messed up your microfracture you will probably need another surgery with another 8 weeks of no weight and crutches. good luck.

From ArmyRunner on Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 00:51:15

Jason - It took me quite awhile to bend it all the way. If you read my blog days following my surgery you can see it was awhile until I had majority of range of motion back. However, it came faster than physical therapist expected and I think this is because I used a spin bike for several hours a day from day 2 after the surgery. It was a long road but I am running 1 mile a day as of last week. So 6 months of no running but I am giving it a go now. The knee still hurts but I am hoping that will go away as the muscles around the knee continue to strengthen up gradually. If not then I guess I will have to take up bicycling.

I have not used a brace at all. Both my doctor and physical therapist did not want me to.

Meredith - Good luck with the second surgery. I do not know what I would do if I had to get the same thing on my other knee. Best of luck. To make you feel better I know a woman that had both knees replaced and a little over a year later ran a sub 3 hour marathon. So there is always hope.

Brian - Best of luck. Let us know how things go.

Anita - Hope things are progressing well for you.

Like most everyone else, i have been very active ( running, basketball, tennis, etc). I find myself depressed and very moody.

From buckeyebilly on Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at 13:59:28

Hey all,

I have much empathy for anyone that has had microfracture surgery on their knees. I injured my right knee racing a dirt bike and initially told I probably tore a meniscus. As things played out it turned out I had a torn ACL and medial/lateral meniscus tears. During surgery they also discovered a lesion of bad cartilage in my trochlear notch (groove on femur where patella tracks and partial weight bearing). So in recovery I too was told by the way you will need to use crutches for six weeks with only toe touch weight bearing. This is much harder than it sounds and complicates your life in ways you can't imagine! I am at the three week mark post-op and trying to stick with my PT, CPM, and keeping my mood up. Views/opinions on post op protocols and long term recommendations seem to be quite varied and still evolving? I was told the microfracture with an ACL may have a better outcome based on the amount of bleeding involved in both? Any one else hear that? And I assume a trochlear notch lesion may have a different outcome that medial or lateral condyles as they bear more weight in the knee joint. Lastly has anyone else began taking any joint supplements. I have started taking Fast Flex from GNC which has EFA, MSM, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, White Willow bark extract, and fish oil. I don't think it can hurt anything and I hope and pray it is enhancing the healing process. I can't wait to start walking normally again let alone running, swimming, biking, etc. Goog luck to all the above!

As far as forgetting about running I think that will be up to you. I did not run for 6 months and just started again in Jan. I did 1 mile a day for first 4 weeks and now I am trying 2 miles a day. The knee still hurts but I am hopeful that this is just muscle weakness and lack of proper knee support from staying off of it for so long. Plenty of professional athletes have played basketball and football after microsurgery so yes it is possible. So do your rehab and strengthen that leg slowly but surely. Then about six months from now give it a go and see what happens. I am taking it one day at a time and remain hopeful that I will run another marathon someday.

I had microfracture (2 drills) on 1/30/09. I can actually walk on my leg without crutches and without limping for about 20 mins or so. Even though it has only been a week and a half. I also was told that I would be on crutches for 6 weeks. But, my leg is recovering great. I've been in excellent shape all my life and had pretty strong legs before the procedure. But, I am nervous that I may be hurting myself more by walking on the leg. Is it typical to be able to walk on the leg without too much pain a week after the surgery?

From ArmyRunner on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 19:43:43

Biskit,

I would absolutely not walk on the knee or bear any weight for at least 6 weeks like the doctor has said. It is not that you can't do it. It is that you can cause damage to the repair of your cartilage. I could have easily walked within days after surgery. What makes it hard to walk later on is the muscle atrophy that occurs due to no weight bearing for 6 weeks. The key is the no weight bearing allows for the hole in your cartilage to fill in and heal properly. If you bear weight it can damage this process and then you might as well have not had the surgery. So be smart and listen to your doctor on this one.

Thank you Army runner. You are great! I plan to take this rehab one day at a time. Please keep writing it really helps me to read how you are doing. I always wanted to run the NYC marathon and will keep on dreaming. If you have time can you please let me know if you had any swelling in your knee at about 8 weeks after surgery? I had an increase in swelling this week after being progressed to weight bearing as tolerated and swimming .5 mile. Thanks again!

I'm so glad to have found this blog! I tore my acl as a teen (I'm 43 now), and just had it fixed last month. In the process, my orthopedist found some arthritis (no surprise since I've been running for the last 7-8 years) and did a small microfracture procedure along with a partial medial menisectomy. What's really unusual about my case is that he has not limited my weight bearing at all. I'm a physical therapist and questioned him about this, but he assured me that wbing was fine. Interesting, huh? He's a very well-respected surgeon in my area. I'm 5 weeks post-op now and am doing well with rehab, but I still have a limp when I walk. I can swim with a pull-buoy and ride a stationary bike and was able to do 30 minutes of spinning (taking it easy) this past week. My pain was pretty bad for the 1st few weeks, but is gradually improving...now I mainly have tightness, but my range of motion is almost full. I initially hoped to be running by 3 months (going by straight acl protocol), but now think it may take longer! It's great to read about others who have been through similar surgeries! Good Luck!

From ArmyRunner on Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 22:25:02

Amy V,

I did have minor swelling on and off during the first three or four rehab months. I usually took this as a sign to take it easy the next day or two during rehab exercises as I have a tendency to want to push too hard to soon. Just keep at it and you will be running again. I did not run my first mile until 6 months post op.

Tracy,

I'm glad this has been a help for you. After my surgery I did not find a lot of information or others out there who have made it through this recovery. So I started this blog to help motivate myself to keep working hard through the rehab. I truly love to run and doing rehab was probably more difficult than getting myself out the door for a 20 mile run. Sounds strange but true. I am surprised your doctor has allowed weight bearing so soon. However, maybe your micro-fracture damage was in a non-weight bearing surface area. I was cautious and waited to start running until 6 months just to make sure. I really wanted to start running at around 4 months and felt I was ready but I held off for a couple extra months. I am up to 2 miles a day now and have run as fast as a 6:15 mile even. So hope is still alive!

Thanks ArmyRunner! I know what you mean about running...it's hard to find other things that make you feel the same way. I'm vowing to be patient through this process, hoping that in the end, my knee will be stronger and more stable and I'll have lots of years of running ahead of me. I'll look forward to keeping up with your progress!

Armyrunner, Thanks for letting me know about the swelling. My swelling did go away after 1 day of taking it easy and ice. Thanks again. I am checking in on you and am pulling for you. Tomorrow I am 8 weeks postop! Hooray!

Tracy W-I had my ACL repaired back in 1994. My ACL had held up and is still intact. I remember with my rehab then, I worked hard in rehab, but my knee decided on it's own to loosen up. The hardest part of range of motion/PT to regain was full extension. Hang in there!

From Fratch on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 15:44:06

I had my microfracture surgery done on 1/21/09. Woke up to it. Wish I woulda found this blog sooner.

I will be off of crutches next Wednesday, maybe a few days sooner. I have rehabbed vigorously and maniacally, really. To anyone---get in the pool EVERY DAY!! Flutter kicks, bicycle pedalling, and kicks to strengthen the quad. I suggest--if you can handle it, to buy ankle weights to put on as well in the pool. I'm at 10 pounds, and that seems pretty good for me. I get a lot of quad twitches in the pool, which is a good thing.

I play baseball, and am 33 y/o, and have to get back by April 26th. Not a big runner, just 30 minutes of cardio 2-3x week.

Has anyone experienced a comeback where they were back in 3 months or so? I have good ROM right now, just can't rid myself of the achy feeling I get. My goal is to be back to at least 90% by the beginning of the season.

Any help, advice, or encouragement is more than welcome.

Thanks,

Fratch

From ArmyRunner on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 21:13:21

Fratch,

It sounds like you are doing very well with the rehab. I agree the pool if you have access is a great way to cross train and rehab. I still get that achy feeling but not as much as it was a couple months ago. By 3 months I probably could have started to run but the physical therapist and doctor did not feel it was worth the risk. Like you I was very aggressive for the first 3 months of rehab and I think it paid off. I also gained my ROM back very quickly. Maybe since you are not running as much you can start to play baseball again after 3 months. I would really just listen to the doctor and physical therapist and play it by feel. I was cautious as I did not want to lower the chances of a full healing process. Keep up the hard and boring rehab work and it should pay off. Best of luck.

Armyrunner,

Thanks for your encouragement. Sounds kind of corny, but this blog is just what I needed really.

People that haven't gone through this couldn't imagine the mental anguish (at least for me) that rehab gives us every day, just to get back to square one. That, and conjoining with the fact that we're not able to do what we're really passionate about makes the mind very lonely and distant sometimes.

Good to talk to people who are going/have gone through what I am right now. I will definitely give some updates for another comparison.

Also good to hear that you got past that achy feeling after agressive rehab. I'm hoping that I can get back on the diamondsince late August for this.

Thanks again,

Fratch

Amy V,

Glad to hear your ACL is still holding up after almost 15 years. It's really weird for me to have one again after almost 30 years of instability...my knee just feels really tight w/walking, probably because my norm was very loose before. I'm trying to be patient, but it's not easy!

Fratch and ArmyRunner,

It's a good night for me to read that others get that achy feel after working hard. Today I did my rehab, then a spinning class and swimming (still with a pull buoy...can't kick yet because of the acl). I feel my knee tonight, but ice helped a lot.

Keep working hard...remember that in the overall scheme of things, 3,6, or even 12 months isn't that much.

I just found this site. My story is the same. Went in for meniscus tear repair on 2/13 and was very surprised to hear afterwards no weight for 6 weeks because he did microfracture surgery. He hadn't mentioned that as a possibility beforehand. I'm still angry about it.

I start PT next Monday. CPM hasn't been mentioned nor spinning. I'm staying off it, tho the crutches are awkward. It sure does adversely affect daily activities.

I'm not a runner - but go to the gym daily and lift and do other cardio. I'm 51 and need to work out. Sitting around all day for the past two weeks hasn't done my butt any good! thanks for the site. It was really helpful to read what everyone else is experiencing and that my situation sounds common.

No need to sit on your duff! I have still maintained a great regimen and I rarely miss a day. What I'd suggest is doing just upper body, and concentrating on one part. Day 1-bi's and tri's 2) shoulders 3) back 4) core & chest.

Check out www.ithinkfit.com. I've gotten with them and have actually LOST 11 lbs in a month and a half with proper diet and this regimen. They KNOW what they're doing.

Amy V,

I don't think I'll be using any kind of brace when I get back to running. As a P.T., the only unloading braces I've seen are for arthritic patients' comfort. I can't see that they would be of much benefit during running or sports as you're not going to be able to stop the compression forces that go through your knee during these activities. So....let's hope for full healing after microfracture! Hope this helps!

My doctor had my on six weeks no weight bearing and then it took about another week until I was walking 100% without crutches. I highly recommend you do so light spin bike with no resistance. This really helped with my recovery. I did not start running again until six months after surgery but I am not up to 3 miles a day. I still have some pain but I am hoping that this will go away eventually as the leg continues to strengthen. Be prepared to work hard on physical therapy and yourrecovery should go a much faster overall. Best of luck.

From ArmyRunner on Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 14:07:37 from 66.7.118.166

Hi Amy V,

I did not have a lot of swelling post surgery or since. A little bit every once in a while but really hardly noticeable.

I did add some resistance gradually but only as the knee could tolerate without pain. It took awhile but the resistance increased gradually.

I ran a 5K today. I had not intent of going fast but the knee felt good and I went with it. It was hilly and at 5000ft and I ran a 19:23 with mile splits of 6:23, 6:20 and 5:57. This really surprised me and hopefully shows that I am well on my way to at least being able to run decent 5 and 10K races in the future.

Kneebum,

No knee brace as my physical therapist and knee doc did not recommend one and said it was not necessary.

Thanks TracyW. Don't get too down as I felt the same way between 9-16 weeks. I had those down days when I really just thought learning to walk normal was a challenge let alone thinking about ever being able to run again. As far as the pain and tightness I had and still have some of the same feelings but I can run. It definitely does not feel like my other knee yet and maybe it never will but I can live with that. Kind of a strange tightness/burning feeling in the area of the surgery. My quad on the knee surgery leg is still noticeably smaller than my other quad as well as I still have not made up the loss from muscle atrophy. Just take it one day at a time and set that goal to try and run at 6 months. Until then just try and focus on getting that leg strong again.

I have enjoyed reading this blog since my January 6th microfracture surgery. Six weeks on two crutches, two weeks on one, off loading knee brace (which I already had so he wanted me to use it) weeks 7 through 10. I am no longer using the knee brace. MWF - PT - ecliptic and spin bicycle - leg and toe presses - stair step excersizes; TRS - Swim for one hour - crawl with flutter kick - 50 minutes - water job for 10 minutes. My microfracture area is just under 1 CM. No swelling or pain but can feel it every now and then. 19 stairs in our house from kitchen to master bedroom. A curse on crutches but good to use during rehab. Dr. pleased with progress. I think I am the oldest one around to have microfracture - 64. Jack

From Meredith on Sat, Mar 21, 2009 at 09:35:41 from 67.241.160.64

Just wanted to give an update on the surgery I previously mentioned. As I suspected microfracture was performed and I did wake up to more. They said they performed a lateral release and found that my knee cap was a little out of the groove. Not too bummed about this because I also suspected this knee to be worse than my Right knee (surgery on that knee 8/08).

Because of the lateral release this past week has been tough with just trying to recover from the actual surgery. Now i'm feeling better and I plan to get back on track with the rehab. I get on the bike tomorrow and Physical therapy starts on Monday to help with some calf cramps. Best of luck to everyone.

Armyrunner or anyone,

9 weeks post-op tomorrow, and Monday the Doc who performed my surgery told me I could resume normal activities!???? That kind of raised my eyebrow a little because I think it's a little too early to be thinking about running a mile or anything. I ran half hearted for about a minute last night, and no pain today.

Any thoughts on from the peanut gallery whether this could be too early? I am in great shape, 6'3' 214 lbs, 9% body fat, etc..And my guess is that I rehabbed harder than 99% of anyone that's had this surgery just to hear the news I heard on Monday, but am very weary of starting too early and reinjuring or aggrevating this again.

From TracyW on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 19:41:50 from 24.158.76.166

Fratch,

Hmmmm, 9 weeks does seem a bit early. I think I would definitely err on the conservative side with running, because of all the pounding/compression on that still-healing fracture site. I'm 10 weeks out tomorrow and am not planning on any running until at least 4 months post-op. I miss it but can really get a good work out now in the pool and spinning. Good Luck!

From ArmyRunner on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 21:50:30 from 66.7.118.166

Fratch,

I agree 9 weeks seems way too early from everything I have read and been told. I would stick with pool running and bike for now. I was told and the research I have conducted all pretty much said 4 months minimum before impact events should be done. This is due to the time it takes for the fibrocartilage to form and harden up in place of the missing cartilage. What I was told is the bone marrow blood seeps into the hole in the cartilage where the surgery was performed and essentially creates a scab (fills in the hole). This process takes 4-6 months to fully heal properly and the risk of damaging it by doing impact activities such as running too early are pretty high. I was running 100 mile weeks prior to this injury and was dying to run again but I truly went with the more conservative approach on this one as I wanted to give it every possible chance to heal properly as I prefer not to ever has this surgery again. Good luck.

Best of luck with the recovery Meredith.

Jack B, best of luck with your rehab as well. At 64 you are a bit older than most with this procedure but hopefully it will work for you. It sounds like you are doing the right thing and the rehab is going well so far.

I am at 8 months post surgery and have progressed to 3-4 miles a day and can do so with most pain in the first mile and then after that it lets up, mostly. Progress has been slow but steady. Hopefully this gives others hope that you can return to running following microfracture surgery. I am by no means 100% but I think I am on my way and hope to run pain free again someday.

From Fratch on Thu, Mar 26, 2009 at 10:54:29 from 216.43.129.78

Yeah I thought that sounded fishy myself too. Maybe he was just getting at "I'm OK to resume what I can--as long as I can handle it"...Ideally I'd like to do that, but still know I'm limited. I'd love to start doing hang cleans and squats again :)

Thanks again for running this blog. Although I'm no where near done, as weeks 9-16--I'm told--are slowly progessing--its always nice to know that other people in our situation understand our plights from this surgery. Thanks again!!!

From ArmyRunner on Sat, Mar 28, 2009 at 21:59:06 from 66.7.118.166

Barbara,

At around six weeks I was not putting any real resistance on the spin bike but I was able to do about 6 minute mile pace with no resistance. So nothing real fast but I would do about 2 hours so it felt like I was getting a workout in at least. Around 8 weeks I stated to go a lot faster on the bike with still very little resistance. I remember doing a 5K on the bike in sub 12:00. This was when I started to really get some cardio work but just left resistance low for me it seemed he speed di not bother the knee as long as the resistance was low. Best of luck and just go by feel and gradually work things back up again.

I am out of PT, s/p microfracture from 12/30/08 so I am kind of on my own. Right now I am letting pain/swelling be my guide, had some discomfort and swelling after the ride I think I'll wait a few more weeks before re-trying the cycling.

Anyone with any insight about cycling s/p microfracture I would love to hear it.

Hi again everyone! I have been off of crutches for 3 weeks now. I have to say the recovery with this knee has been extremely different than the other knee. The issue now is that I it still feels like there is something in my knee. I hate to say it, but I do. I notice when I go up for down stairs or on uneven surfaces I have to shake my leg out or massage it (this is what triggered the surgery-loose bodies). They only made two incisions on the front of my knee and the issue is in the inside/back of my knee. I go in next week for a f/u appt and i'm really really hoping they have some good things to say. Anyone else notice this type of thing after surgery for removal of loose bodies????

From TracyW on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 22:43:24 from 75.130.146.159

AmyV,

I think you're absolutely right about letting pain/swelling be your guide. I had been doing a LOT of spinning and knew my knee felt pretty good on the bike. My biggest concern was the unclipping, but I was careful with it. If that't a problem for you once you start back, you could always try some cages. My doctor hadn't really given me any guidance, but cycling really should be safe since there's no impact...just take it easy at first! Good Luck!

Meredith,

I sometimes get a "catching" sensation, and occasionally even a pop in my knee. It's not painful, and it does seem to be getting less frequent. Hopefully they got everything out that they were supposed to and you just need a bit more time.

By the sounds of it im not the first to wake up in the recovery room to be told youve had a microfracture. I am one week post op. Suprising enough ive not had hardly any bruising and swelling has virtually gone back to the same as my good knee.I woke up with a full leg brace on, stopping me from straighteneing my leg which i guess might cause damage to new cartlidge growth. Ive been told no weight bearing for another week or two then go on too partial weight bearing but to keep the leg brace on. & days in and yes its real depressing knowing normal sporting activities could be many months away.Ive already had one session of physio and are due for more. Im keeping my fingers crossed for evryone else in the same position, and of course for myself. I just hope things will return to normal..... P.S VERY HELPFULL BLOG

Just been back for my two week post op check. Had even better news now and have been told ive got to wear my full leg brace which stops me knee from extending fully for at least another 4 weeks.......I thought I would be having it removed but no such luck. Those days of sport are getting further away rather than nearer. Ive not even started physio or walking with any pressure on my foot yet!!! Has anyone else had this aswell and if yes how long will it be before I walk? Cus the Dr cant seem to say.....

Hi, Adam, sorry to hear of the not so good news, but it will be for the better in the long run... no pun attached, I havnt had any injury this bad, but I did have compartement syndrome in both legs on the front of my shins, I had small surgery on them to release the pressure, as I couldnt feel my leg in that area any more very painful too, I couldnt walk upstairs the week before the surgery. long story short, it took approx 2-3 weeks to start walking again with no pain and approx 5 months to start running again, although this was more because it was an over-use injury so the more I rested the smaller the muscle would get!

Tough times for you at the moment, as you cant see the end of the tunnell but it will come, and you will get there, it's patience, determination and grit, but you will get there.

Jack B, great I can keep pretty damn fit with swimming alone I dont tend to do water jogging, as I just dont get outta breathe too much with it, so swimming legs crawl is great to teach you rythm with breathing, and fantastic for cardio, something that maybe adam can look at when his brace is off, as swimming is non weight bearing?

all the best injury is a curse to any athlete....but a true mind strengthener

From ADAM UK on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 05:17:12 from 94.192.99.224

Sounds strange to me but Ive now been told to do no physio untill my first six weeks are up. But been told to partial weight bear next week which will be 3 weeks post op, and then full weight bearing 6 weeks post op.

Do most people walk fairly normal again once off crutches after 6 weeks?

From ArmyRunner on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 23:50:11 from 69.169.145.121

Adam,

I did not walk anywhere close to normal after coming off crutches at 6 weeks. In fact I could not even walk at first. I had to transition from 2 crutches to one crutch and then ultimately a slow hobble for small walks at a time. It was embarrassing and a truly humbling experience. It took a couple of months before I was walking somewhat normal without a noticeable limp. Even now my left quad is still somewhat smaller than my right quad from the muscle atrophy and it has been 10 months since the surgery and I have been running again for 4 months. Unfortunately this is a long and painful process but the good news is I ran 43 miles this week with limited amounts of pain. So returning to an active lifestyle and even running again are possible.

4 months out from ACL/microfracture. I tried a little jog on the treadmill this past weekend...not good. My knee hurt right away. I stopped immediately. I'm a bit bummed, but I guess I'll keep at the strengthening, cycling/spinning/swimming and try again in a month or 2. I'm thinking of doing a relay triathlon as the swimmer, just to be around the competition again!

ArmyRunner, I keep thinking about that 6 month goal! Glad your running is going well.

Just read the long trail of emails on this subject! Know little on the subject but would like to learn of the experiences of other runners. Avid runner for 20+ years (age 56) and want to continue for a long time.

I had meniscus (torn / 20% removed) and Microfrature surgery (april 27/09)as well. Physio 3 days later with no pain however weight bearing does cause pain.

Post opt happened May 18 and doc states swimmimg/ cycling/ and "gliding sports" should be the prognosis for my future.

I know cases of this nature are very specific to the person, but would like to know of other expe's!!

From Jack Bramsman on Wed, May 20, 2009 at 20:22:11 from 24.20.64.200

Adam, Yes..swimming is non weight bearing. I was told only to use a flutter kick/crawl or water jog. I also use a kick board and flutter kick 15 minutes with minimal knee bend. I also use "short workout fins" to increase water resistance.

Chris, I too will not be able to participate in impact sports. I have gone to the track and walked 4 miles at a 15:30 avg. pace. It felt like I would increase my impact if I tried for a sub 15:00.

I am 64 and will be 65 in November, Swimming MWF; Warm-up and weights TRS. I take Sunday off. I have experienced minor pain this week probably because of the golf driving range last Monday. Also, I still ice ten minutes after I get home from each workout.

3 Weeks post op and now have been told to start partial weight bearing but still locked at 30o in the brace.

It does not feel as if it is my leg that im walking on, ive never experienced anything like it before. Over the next three weeks the angle on the brace is going to be opened up more and I have to try and get to full weight bearing by 6 weeks post op.

The swelling now does not seem to be reducing much day by day. But at least the bruising has started to come out which I see as a good thing as it usually means healing.

From ADAM UK on Wed, May 27, 2009 at 09:17:33 from 94.192.99.224

Just had my 4 week post op check up. I still have my full leg brace on but there is no angle set now so this enables me to totally straighten my leg now if possible.

Ive been told to start weight bearing as much as possible depending on pain, in the next two weeks I have to get to full weight bearing so I can get this brace off and give those horrible crutches back to the hospital!!!!!

CANT WAIT FOR THAT DAY TO COME....

Bending the knee myself is very hard and I need to exercise every day at least 4 times daily.

Hello,

I came across your blog mainly because I was interested in the possibility of microfracture. i'm not even sure if I'm a candidate. I'm 25 and had a meniscus repair in 2005 and a procedure where they poked my meniscus with holes hoping it would reheal in 2003. evidently neither worked and I was told I had arthritis after my second marathon in 2007. I quit running for good and switched to biking as I'm young and have significant knee pain and somewhat limited range of motion.

I'm glad to see you got back to running. Just checking in to see what microfracture is all about. I'd love to run again even if it isn't at the same level or length. I think I'd be quite good at tri's and it would be a good balance.

Even if running wasn't possible I was curious if microfracture would be possible in the future when I'm getting more pain with walking and stuff. I want to postpone a replacement as long as possible. I know this isn't ure situation but I'm glad I found your blog.

Hi. My name is craig. And I had microfracture surgery.

Last week (exactly on week ago) I had it done on my left knee.

Armyrunner, thanks for this blog. Doesn't look like you've posted in a while. Any news on your recovery? Looks like your just over a year into it.

I am 1 week down on a 6 week adventure in crutching. this sucks, do doubt. Especially when it feels like I could walk on it fine, although I won't. I have caught myself 3 times accidentally using the leg for a step.

Anyway, I'm hopefull this works. I play soccer and run (and visa-versa) and plan on doing both within 4 months.

Hi,

Ok I know this sounds extremely stupid but I am dying to know if anyone has done anything similar.

I got my microfracture surgery (unexpected...just expecting scope) on 9/14/2009. I didn't know i had MF surgery until I went back to the 1 week post op so I was putting weight on it the whole first week....well, gimping around was more like it. Went back after 1 week and was told had to spend next 6 weeks on crutches. I could not do it. I was hurting myself more on crutches than off. I played soccer at the 4 week mark...turf, over 30 womens nothing too overboard. It did feel funny though. I had been swimming/biking. I played again this past weekend (5 week mark) and I feel fine. Maybe a little achy. I iced it afterwards. I go to my first PT appt tomorrow and see the doc again on Wed and I am kind of worried they will be able to tell i've been playing. I have full ROM and my muscles have hardly atrophied. But I have to admit after reading all this, I feel like a moron and probably did more damage than I know. Has anyone else done this?

I am 36. Played Division 1 soccer in college, have played basically non stop since then along with a brief stint of triathlons. Never had a serious injury before which probably explains why I am such an idiot. Thanks.

From cbrewer on Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 17:30:30 from 206.81.222.24

Yah, I did last year in 2008. Same leg. I initially had a meniscus fixed and they microfractured a portion of my knee then. I was not told to cructh though and the doc at that time said to just let pain be my guide. Something always hurts so I just played. (besides, my knee did feel better after about a month so I started playing again. After about 3 weeks I started to develop a bakers cyst in the back of that left knee. It's cause by inflamation and fluid build-up, which in tern is the body's reaction to an injury. They put me in anouth MRI and had noticed that my area of damage had gotten bigger.. in addition to another meniscus tear. So, this time I am re-habing they way I am supposed to.

1.5 weeks left of these damn crutches. Good luck.

kayyyyy21.

Interested to read your post.

By way of background my story is much the same as many on here; ie went in for meniscus tidy up and awoke to be told Id needed microfracture surgery.

(Historically I ruptured my ACL completely about 10 years ago aged 36 at football(soccer) and stopped playing that and other sports( squash) although kept reasonably fit and active until I played my first game of soccer in 10 years and the knee went again)

My surgeon here in Scotland is very well respected and I've no reason to doubt anything hes done.

Contrary to the apparent advice most on here have been given (USA based it seems) I was advised to weight bear as much as possible after the op as the surgeon advises his experience is that weight bearing encourages growth of the replacement meniscus.

No brace or CPM machine at all.

I was on two crutches for about a month and a single for a month after that.

Im now 4 months post op and still have pain with almost very step. Its not "show stopping" pain unless I catch or twist my knee.

I cant walk upstairs a step at a time I need to put my strong leg on the upper step and shuffle up with my "bad" leg. I still limp.

Both my surgeon and physio seem unconcerned with my progress and are now stressing muscle work - spin - to rebuild the muscles particularly the quad.

Ive no pain in the knee itself when spinning but the muscle fatigue is really noticeable and I notice the patella is painful post exercise - probably a problem with tracking.

I instinctively feel I'm at least 2 months away from being pain free with any regularity and another while before I can get through the days without thinking about the knee 24/7 and having to concentrate on every basic walking task.

I dont know whether to be depressed or buoyed by the other stories on here about the length of time the rehab from microfracture surgery takes but I'm naturally fairly positive so I'll go for the latter.

I can tell you I've had some real low days in the last few months but Ill never take my health for granted again (I hope!)and Im making enpough progress to feel there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Just wanted to provide an update here. so, it's been almost two months since my microfracture "repair". Off the crutches (I have some aluminum jewelry for sale if your interested) finally. I stuck with them though for the 6 weeks. I have since started doing hot yoga to get my quad to fire better. It's working pretty well. It really did not atrophy very much. I was doing basic PT stuff while on crutches and continually flexing it whenever I thought about it. I also bought a schwin airdyne bicycle (which I might be interested in selling now) to help with the recovery. The airdyne is a great stationary bike. It's one of those fan-type air pushers. The joint seems to be healing and although I can make it hurt if I want by bouncing on it (which I try not to do), I can tell it is getting more and more solid. I am extremely encouraged about the fact that it feels better in some areas than it did prior to the MF surgery. My goal is to start getting back to easy running by xmas. My PT guy says that even if it doesn't hurt at all, that might be too early. He keeps saying 6 months. My goal is to be playing in 6 months. I will see what my surgeon says when I see him again in two weeks. Overall, I'm happy that I did this. I feel very sure that I've bought myself at least 20 years of playing on this knee.

I too had microfracture surgery although I knew going in that I was missing a 4mm x 9mm piece of articular cartilage I knew nothing of microfracture procedure. I was told I will get in there and look around I may be placing some holes in the bone to help your body build a new cartilage. This was told to me after starting anesthesia with no idea of recovery. However, I do believe it was the best route for my healing but was angered when reading of the future. I am a very busy active person. I have two jobs that requiring a lot of walking. So I appreciate this site for encouragement and REAL results. I am 5 days post-op with virtually no instructions except RICE and NWB. I have almost no pain and haven't. Knee started feeling stiff so I began doing research as to what I should be doing to recover. Thanks.

From cbrewer on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 12:07:48 from 206.81.222.24

I would get whatever type of stationary bike will motivate you to use it. I do not believe that it really matters. My PT guy said that it didn't. I asked the same question. Good luck to you.

Update on my kneee: I have been using the eliptical and doing hot yoga since my last post. Seen my surgeon last week. We discussed of my intention to begin running at the 1st of the year with the focus of playing in the spring. He felt that was reasonable and doable. I am stoked about that. I can still make this knee hurt if I pound on it though. His advice is to run/walk the treadmill for a few weeks and gradually increase as knee allows until my next appointment with him in Feb. If I feel pain, then back off. My range of motion is pretty good, due to the yoga. 2010 is going to be a great year.

Armyrunner (and others on this blog),

My name is Alex. I am a 31 year old recent former professional football player. I want to thank you all for your last year of blogging since the blog was started by 'Armyrunner'. I have read through every comment on the blog. I had "surprise" microfracture (lateral femoral - 2cm area with nine microfracture holes performed) while in surgery for what was planned to be a simple meniscus scope on Dec.17th 2009. I have had some very similar experiences to many of you that have posted here... very little post surgery swelling, very fast range of motion (to full 120 degrees on CPM within first few days of surgery). I am now nearly 3 weeks post-surgery and have felt very little pain, maintained use of CPM and have great range of motion, have remained non-weight bearing and done only some basic straight leg sit-ups, one-leg push ups and striaght leg raises as therapy/rehab excercices on my own so far. I am scheduled to have my first therapy/rehab session this week. I was reccomended by my surgeon to simply rest and use cpm, electric stem machine and do some light quad "flexing" and straight leg raises through the first few weeks coinciding with the holidays. Those easy instructions have gone well so far in first 18 days but today I had a mis-hap with my cruthches on the stairs and essentially had to take a majority weight bearing "step" on my bad leg to keep from falling. There was some pain at the point of quick weight bearing that was mostly an "ache" type pain but no extreme pain or "knife" like pain. I got a little immidiate puffy swelling but no major swelling and bending the leg through range of maotion had a soreness or ache type pain in the few minutes after the incident. I am very concerned about the possibility of knocking the "clot" off in this mishap. Has anyone had any similar experience, insight or comments for me. I was previously content to just enjoy reading the experiences and shared support of this board but this incident today prompted me to register and post this comment in hopes of getting some feedback. In addition to any experience or comment on my weight bearing stairs incident I am also wondering opinions on the timeline that I have been advised and taken in my first 3 weeks. It sounds as if many of you began doing rehab work and forms of therapy beyond just the CPM before you reached the 3 week point that I am at and just now being advised to go into my 1st therapy session. I am also being advised that since I have already achieved such quick range of motion to the CPMs max range of 120 degrees and since I am moving into therapy sessions now I no longer need the CPM machine. Many of you have noted using the CPM for 6+ weeks and through the entire non-weight bearing stage... I wonder if this is only necessary in the case wear full range of motion is slower to be achieved. I was very fortunate and blessed to be under team medical care for any injuries but have since retired and navigating the uncharted territory of not having the benefit of a team of doctors and a 24/7 dedicated medical training staff and the annoyances and limitations of individual health insurance and rushed doctors. Any comments, thought and feedback that any of you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Armyrunner, I tried to figure out how to send you a private message directly and/or email you but was unable to do so. You are technically a rival as I played in college as a Wyoming Cowboy but I was hoping that 2 fellow Mountain West Conference allegiance athletes could share some microfracture 'notes'. I am very inspired by your story, blog comments and recovery back to successfull high performance athletic activity and hoping to achieve similar results that you have had. PLEASE reply or even email me directly at aenglish87@verizon.net. I would GREATLY appreciate it.

I went to Dr. today. She thinks I should be without crutches at 6 weeks. I have tried to slow down just because of what I have read on here.

I didn't do anything the first 4 weeks. No one really told me to do so. I found this sight and started some short recumbant bike sessions of about 2, 3 or 4 miles until I went to therapy first therapy session at 4 weeks. They are mostly having me do a lot of exercises to strengthen my quads and hamstring. I have never had any pain. I went the 4 weeks with NO weight bearing not even my toe; a couple of minor mishaps with crutches. My ROM was 115 first visit and now after 5 visits is at 135. My biggest problem is my opposite hip is hurting from standing with all my weight on one leg for so long. My Dr. wrote a prescription for them to treat it as well. I am up to 7 miles on my bike and just trying to be patient til I can drive and be crutch free. Thanks for all the blogs!

Tomorrow will be my 9th week after having micro fracture knee surgery. As did most of you, I went in for a basic chrondroplasty/cartilage clean-up and left with a micro fracture drilling...

I really don't know how to describe my recovery process thus far. I haven’t really thought about it until stumbling upon this blog. I guess I've mentally tried to block it out. My life is centered on fitness and being active. As a full time trainer and fitness instructor I’m feeling pain from this surgery more than just physically. Leading and helping others with vigorous workouts have been my source of income for the past 2 years. No income in a dwindling economy hurts. The brunt of my pain however is mental anguish. Working out is not only my job but my #1 hobby and source of sanity! Whenever I was going through a personal plight and hard time...my workouts played a major role in getting me through. I've busied myself with academics...I will have enough credits to obtain my undergrad come May. I really don't know what I would have done without my college courses as pre-surgery fitness was my life. I realized that learning and deep thinking has become my new release and freedom (if that makes any sense). I guess its freedom of the body vs. freedom of the mind type of thing. One needs a balance of both though, and reading this blog has made me realize what I already sub-consciously knew...that I NEED my workouts & and my life back.

Truth is, I haven’t been terribly diligent with my recovery. I had the surgery at the worst time (I guess there is never a good time). It was right before the holidays and at the start of my fathers political run for a higher office. I had so many events and parties to attend where crutches and a brace just didn't work. I could have made them work, but I chose not too many times. There were at least half a dozen times where I made the stupid mistake of being lax with my instruments of recovery. I never hit the gym or walked a distance without the crutches while I was on them, but I did move short distances and stand up without them which I completely regret and am embarrassed to admit. After 5 weeks on crutches my doctor told me to let them go and use my unloading brace at all times. The first 2 weeks I never took the damn brace off. I even slept in it! After 2 weeks however I grew impatient and stubborn and became risky with it. Over the past couple weeks I have been going out on a Friday night or allowing myself one full day without the brace. It's like a "treat" to me not wearing it, and makes me feel in a sense "normal again".

The reality is that I’m not close to being fully recovered yet and need the brace. The doctor mandates it for a reason... I'm really hoping that my more than "slip-up'" don't undo the good of the surgery. I see my doctor in 3 weeks for my 3rd follow up. Until then I will be in the brace ALL the time. My physical therapist is aware of my negligence and doesn't seem to be too concerned yet..I'm jut so disappointed in myself for not taking the rehab time more seriously.

I'm also starting to become more aware of how much I need the physical aspect of my life back. If any one has any words of encouragement/personal stories please do share :)

it's been almost 5 months since micro-fracture surg. My doc knows that I want to be back to playing soccer by spring. In December he felt that was doable. I'd been pretty diligent about doing yoga 3 times a week and elliptical and stationary bike (which I sold!) up to that point. I started running on the treadmill just before christmas. I found that run/walking just wasn't my style and ran for 35 minutes (about 3.5 miles. Felt so good, I did it the next day for 4 miles, and realized that my knee was sore afterwards. So, I backed off, did yoga for a week but was still really stoked about the runs. Currently, I run 3 times a week and do yoga 3 times a week. My quads are firing great and my legs feel strong. My knee, although I can still make it hurt, it requires quite a pounding to feel it. Around xmas time, when I would begin to run, it would hurt a little for about 3 minutes then feel fine. Now, I can just jump on it and run and it feels fine. I run up stairs again. I go a little easier coming down though, but nobody can notice except me. I think I'm ready to run outside. I see the doc for that clearance on Tuesday. He will probably have me do some easy running on the grass. I'm sure that I will start there, and just go back to my normal outdoor runs. I can feel this thing get exponentially better on a weekly basis now. It is starting to heal. Be patient everyone. find other ways to get your sweat on. Try rowing. That is an awesome workout. It's good to challenge the mind with the physical mundane-ness of a physically challenging activity that's approaches the point of suffering, ha ha! No really, it is. I really think I'll be back training with my son by March 1, and back to playing by mid-April.

Alex, sorry it took so long to get back to this blog. Did you play american football or Soccer? Anyways, I hope your knee is recovering well. I never had a CPM machine. I just didn't want to atrophy at all so I kept stretching, moving and flexing as much as possible. I'll say it again, the yoga really help keep the rest of my body in shape and feeling "ready" to train. About mid-January I ran, then lifted, then did yoga, all in the same day. It was a little stupid, but, oh well. I did notice a little swelling that lasted for about a day. Just a little. I took it as a sign and went back to being patient again. I was a little worried then, but not any more.

Youre looking for words of encouragemnt and I can empathise completely with that. Unexpected microfracture surgery is no fun , thats for sure.

I posted here on 29 10 2009, 4 months after my op and I can assure you that while I still have some issues and pain , particularly walking upstairs , overall I'm much happier now than then.

In essence, I'd say you have you just have to be as positive as you can - your progress might feel slow but as long as youre careful and dont suffer any relapse while your internal scar (or new meniscus tissue ) is maturing the worst is definitely behind you.

Also remember that every one and every procedure is different and you probably need to be guided intuitively about how your knee feels. The older you are and the more frequently youve damaged your knee previously the more likely it is to be compromised long term but , even if that is the case, there's plenty you can do to stay fit.

Overall , Id say staying positive is probably the hardest but most important thing. I try to focus on how far I've come since the op rather than anything else.

All the best with your recovery.

Im gettting this surgery done in two weeks. Anyone have any advice? Will I be able to drive? Will I still be able to workout upper body?

njboss

see my post of feb 07 for general advice.

Im based in the UK. I could drive a day or so after my op because it was my left knee and I drive an automatic so no gear change - other wise it would have been impossible I think. Incidentally you might want to check with your insurers before driving.

On upper body training I dont see why not but at least immediately after the op you'll be on double crutches which will be very restricting.I'd check with your surgeon. Good luck.

I had the same procedure 6 weeks ago. Actually walked out of the facility and was not required to use crutches. I have had no problems, but I am definitely taking it slow. I can walk briskly or ride a bike in very low gear. No impact is the rule. Full range of motion with some compression at the top end. Pre-surgery -- i was a wreck, and had been for 2 years, but continued to run through it. Even did Marine Corps Marathon last year. But glad I had it checked out. I starte PT 2 weeks after surgery. I have a great therapist who is focusing on strengthening the obscure muscles in our hips and elsewhere that we typically ignore in our running. Hope to come back stronger, but I am in no hurry after waiting so long to have it addressed. Best to all, and thanks for posting so much. I also feel your sense of frustration and cabin-fever!!

Knee surgery plus 3 days (K+3).

Took bandages off for first time today. 3 very small cuts, two below knee and one on top inside of knee. Very small incisions about the width of a pencil. Surprised but happy to see minimal swelling at this point. Tonight I did 30 minutes on the spin bike but it was not really spinning. It was very slow range of motion (ROM) work. Just barely moving the pedals around for 30 minutes to keep decent ROM. The knee was tight but not much pain to speak of which I assume is a good sign. I am suppossed to get up to at least 4 hours per day of spinning as soon as I can. As long as it does not hurt then I assume I am ok. I will inquire more with the doctor later this week. I hate the crutches but if all goes well I should be off of them sometime during the Olympics this summer.

Thanks again for the support FRB. Run some more miles for me!

Knee surgery plus 4 days (K+4).

Minor swelling still but not much pain at all.

AM - Did 1 hour Range of Motion (ROM) on the bike.

PM - Did another hour of ROM on bike.

Going this slow on bike is very boring but the worst part is how sore my butt is. My butt is bruised pretty dang good at this point. I need to go to the store and invest in a good pair of biking shorts. I may add some swimming to my routine later this week or next. If I can run in the pool that will help and then I can also just swim with upper body only. That would at least give me some cardio work.

With all of the biking and swimming I am planning on getting over the next several months I guess I should look into doing some tri-athalons when I am fully recovered.

Still hate crutches but staying positive with bruised butt and all!

Ted, sorry about you being down, but hopefully it will have a positive outcome. Your idea of swimming with upper body is an excellent one. You can get a pullbuoy and isolate your legs completely. You will get a very good cardio and upper body workout (and it will give you some other type of exercise than sitting on a bike for hours). My daughter was pulling only for about 2 weeks when she had leg injury (she is a swimmer), and she did not lose any fitness. Stay positive and focus on rehab exercises rather than thinking about the negatives. You will recover and you will run again!

K+5 (Knee Surgery + 5 days)

AM -1 hour Range of Motion(ROM) on spin bike.

PM - Another hour of ROM.

Getting a little faster each day but the butt still hurts from the seat. Also doing a few leg exercises as well, just trying to keep from losing all of the muscles in my left leg. Overall the knee feels ok with some minor swelling still. Not putting any weight on it is getting tough because at times I just want to get up and walk. I am really trying to take the no weight bearing serious as I want to give this the best chance at healing properly. Next week I can hopefully start up some swimming and pool running. We will see what the Dr. says. Hopefully with each passing day I am one step closer to my first day of running again.

So far so good on the recovery. Are you carrying around an inflatable donut yet?

From Dale on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 11:04:19

Your muscles will get strong again. Keeping/expanding your ROM is the about just as important as keeping the weight off your knee and letting it heal....after all, it's hard to run if your knee ROM is limited. Keep at it and you'll be back on your feet in no time! You WILL be back up and running in no time!

K+6 (six days post surgery but whos counting!)

AM - Another hour on my friend the spin bike work on more ROM.

PM - Yet another hour of ROM work on the good old spin bike.

Also doing some leg lift routines to work on some muscle maintenance. I have also discovered that my favorite thing to ice with is a bag of frozen corn. Although frozen peas and frozen blackberries work decent as well. THe corn seems to work best as it is really east to shift the corn around to conform to the shape of the knee and it seems to distribute the cold nicely without feeling like it is giving the knee freezer burn. So for those that ice often try the frozen corn strapped on with an ace bandage it works great. I am probably icing the knee about 4 hours a day still. Until tomorrow!

K+7 (yes, 1 week since the surgery!)

If I can just keep taking it one week at a time it does seem as bad.

AM - One hour of ROM on spin bike.

PM - Another hour of ROM.

So one week of crutches complete and only 3-5 weeks to go.  Next week if I am cleared to do so I plan on ramping things up training wise. I am going to try and set aside 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening for physical therapy and working out. Looking at therapy exercises and stretching, spin bike ROM, swimming and water running, and then also incorporating some weight training. I may not be able to do much with my left knee but I can still work the other parts of my body as long as it does not strain the knee.

PM - 1:15 ROM again.

So to celebrate the start of week two of rehab/recovery I increased my ROM time on the spin bike. Total of two and a half hours today.

AM - 1 hour 15 minutes spin bike ROM.

PM - Another 1 hour 15 minutes ROM.

Today was my first post operation appointment with the doctor. Nothing major to talk about. The doctor showed me the pictures of the surgery and gave me copies as well. I only have a hard copy of some nice high quality color images of my knee. The images are amazingly clear and detailed. The cartilage damage is clearly visible and it is in the exact spot that I had been having the pain in my knee. Based on the size and location of the injury he feels I have a very high chance of a full recovery. Right now I am cleared to do some swimming and other stuff as long as I do not put any weight on the knee, especially if it is bent at all. He is primarily concerned with focusing on the healing process first and then focusing on the strenghthening process after he is confident it has healed properly. So for now no physical therapy until I am off the crutches. I will see him again in 3 weeks to determine if I can start to get off the crutches or not but he thinks I stand a really good chance of being off crutches at the 4 week mark. So for now I continue on with the ROM work on the spin bike twice a day and I will try and slowly work in some swimming as well.

The knee feels pretty good but it is hard to tell since I am not allowed to put any weight on it. I really just want to walk on it and go for a short jog. However, I know I can't. I am at the two week mark on crutches and hopefully only have two more weeks before I can start some physical therapy. Normally I am one to push the limits when it comes to injuries and recovery but with this I am trying to really hold back and listen to the doctor. So two weeks down and two or so two go and then the longer rehab process can begin. I am staying positive and really looking forward to being able to run again one way or another.

The worst part about the spin bike routine is that my butt is very bruised and sore. I was hoping that it would get better after awhile but so far no luck. That and the hands get a bit sore as well. So I was wondering if there are any bicycle riders that have any suggestions. I have bought and use a nice pair of bike shorts and some good bike gloves but the soreness is still pretty bad. How long until the butt feels better if ever? Maybe I just don't have enough natural padding!

Since you do not have to worry about weight and aerodynamics could you buy a seat that allows "full butt" support. Sorry for the wording, but I do not know how else to describe it.

Trust me when I say I know what you're going through. Some times I think "Man, Benn. What if you are never able to run again. What will you do?" Other times I feel as if I could run a 3 hour marathon tomorrow! Recovery has its ups and downs, and is definitely a bumpy ride, but the key factor in determining a successful recovery is striving to maintain a positive attitude and outlook. Continue and persevere through the crappy times, and live in the moment. Make new goals structured around your recovery so that you can still push yourself and monitor your recovery. I give 110% into my biking and I think it is making me a stronger runner for it. Or will for that matter. I hope to be able to run again sometime soon, but hey if I can't I can live with that. The Lord has a plan for all of us. We have to make the most of what He gives us and though it stinks, we have to understand that tomorrow might be a more likely choice than today to get back on the roads. All things take time. You're in my prayers buddy. God bless.

I know the knee is stiff and there is some scar tissue but all of this is fairly normal I guess. The real scary part is how fast the quad muscles in my left leg have atrophied. 2 hours of spin bike ROM again.

Ok, so I had another Dr. appointment and things look ok. The good news is that I start formal physical therapy on Friday and I can start to try and learn to walk again. The process is going to be slow but at least I can start. Hopefully I can be crutch free within two weeks. The first step is I can bear weight while standing and I can start simulating a walking motion on the crutches gradually allowing myself to bear more and more weight on the leg until I get to the point where I only need one crutch. After that then I should be able to ditch the crutches all together after a few more days. Goal is no more than two weeks but I will take it gradual and also listen to the physical therapist as he will let me know when I can officially ditch the crutches.

The down side as I quickly discovered is that even only bearing partial weight the little muscles I have remaining cramp up very quickly when I simulate walking with crutches and bear weight standing. So let the true rehab begin! More to follow after talking with the physical therapist on Friday.

2 hours on spin bike for ROM

First day of formal physical therapy and it went pretty good. Good is a relative term as it was painful and hard but this can be good as well. The only bad news is that the PT does not want me to come off the crutches until the 6 week mark. He prefers me to do the partial weight bearing simulated walking for two weeks first. He wants the muscle strength in my quad to return before I try and walk with full weight on the knee. So my metal friends will remain with me for a couple more weeks.

On a good note he was very happy and surprised with my range of motion at only 4 weeks after surgery. Before he measured my range of motion he said our goal would be to get me to at least 140 degrees. A normal athlete prior to surgery would be in the 150-160 degree range and returning to at least 140 degrees is a minimum goal. When he measured my range of motion it was already at 136 degrees. He usually only sees about 120 degrees at this point so I am doing good as far as range of motion is concerned. He had me do a bunch of different exercises to see where my quad stength is at and to start to rebuild a little as well. I was there for two hours so what little muscle I do have left in the quad is wiped out right now. As far as quad strength it was pretty sad. I essentially have almost no inner quad left. It is extremely difficult and painful to just lift my left leg in the fully straight position off of the floor while sitting. Took everything I had to get it off the floor. It was a pretty sad site but he said this is normal. I did much better at the other exercises so it is primarily the inner quad that has completely lost all strength.

So overall a tough but good day. I will be going to PT three times a week for the next couple months. So I am on my way back one step and one rehab exercise at a time.

Normal 2 hours on the spin bike plus a whole bunch of rehab exercises all througout the day.

It is nice to see progress already. My range of motion has increased measurably already. I will not be surprised if on Monday I am at 140+ degrees already. We will see. One of the exercises is a simple one of just sitting with your leg straight on the floor and lifting it straight off the floor about 6 inches. Although this sounds very simple and I am suppossed to only do 10 reps 3 times a day it amazes me at how hard this is for my left leg. It literally takes all of the concentration and strength I can muster to get the leg off the ground. However, yesterday I was only able to get one set of 10 reps and then the muscle completely failed when I tried to get a second set in later on. Today I made progress and was able to get three sets of 10 in throughout the day. This may not seem like much of an accomplishment but for me it was a victory.

Congrats to all of the FRB racers today!

In Cedar City so no spin bike today. Did do a lot of physical therapy exercises. I was very pleased as my leg strength is improving very quickly. I was able to do 60 leg lifts today and less than a week ago doing 10 was a very difficult task. I asked the PT if I could do more than the assigned 30 reps if I could and he said as long as the only pain I have is muscular then it was ok. So I have been putting extra sets as much as I can. It is nice to see improvement so quickly.

Tomorrow will be 5 weeks post surgery!

Drove back from Cedar City today. Did 2 hours of physical therapy when I got back. PT measured range of motion and I am at 140 degrees today. This was the first goal he gave me and wanted me to get it within two weeks if possible. I made it in 5 days so goal accomplished and time to move on the next goal of 145 degrees within the next two weeks. PT added some additional exercise machines today that made things a little tougher. I am up to 7 different machine exercises now. I have made it a goal when he gives me a set of 30 reps to do 40 if I can. He said this is ok so it gives me motivation to put in the extra effort. My legs are a bit tired tonight but that is a good thing.

1 hour on spin bike as well.

So hopefully only 1 more week of full time crutch use. I have been gradually putting more weight on the left leg as I walk with the crutches. So far not much pain so hopefully walking will go well next week. I am a bit nervous about how those first steps will go but at the same time very much ready to get rid of the crutches.

Your recovery seems to be going great! How is Cedar City doing? I went to school there and haven't been back since 2004... what a beautiful place!

5 weeks post microfracture surgery and counting

2 hours on spin bike again plus about 2 hours of other physical therapy exercises

I go back to the PT tomorrow and hope to have continued to make progress

I did figure out that the two hours of spin bike per day is actually up to about 20 miles of biking now so that means I am doing about 120 miles on the bike a week. Not hard but better than nothing.

More reports tomorrow

K+36 days

Today was a good day at physical therapy. My range of motion measured at 143 degrees which was another improvement. I am almost at my second goal of 145 degrees. The goal was to get to 145 in less than two weeks from Wednesday when I measured 140 degrees. So it looks like I might make that much faster as well. After that it is on to 150 degrees an hopefully eventually equal my right leg of 155 degrees. The PT is still very surprised at how fast I am making progress with the range of motion. Strength wise things are improving and the goal is to be walking short distances by the end of next week. This will be a more difficult task but I will do what I can to make this happen.

So what does my day look like as far as training and rehab right now? Below is what my day looked like today.

5:30am wake up

6:00-7:00am spin bike for about 10 miles of spinning

7:00-8:00am leg strengthening and range of motion exercises

8:30-10:30am Physical Therapy Session consists of:

15-20 minutes of heat pad muscle warm-up

15 minutes of wall heel slides then measure knee range of motion

15 minutes of straight leg lifts and side leg lifts

10 minutes of quad flex and prone extension stretch

15 minutes of spin bike covering 2-3 miles

30-40 minutes on weight machines and slide machine for a total of 7 sets of 30-40 reps each

15 minutes of elevated ice on knee

Then I go to work all day and before bed I do the following:

8:00-9:00pm 1 more hour on spin bike (10 miles)

9:00-10:00pm more leg strengthening and range of motion exercises

So on physical therapy days I do about 6 hours total. This does not count the ice routine that I do for about an hour a day spread throughout the day.

2 hours and 15 minutes on bike = 22-23 miles today

Also did ROM and strengthening exercises throughout the day. Pretty happy as I did 120 straight leg lifts and 150 side leg lifts. Considering I could barely do 10 of these about a week ago things are progressing nicely. Slowly but surely putting more weight on knee but still on two crutches.

Worked on leg strength today. Did 150 straight leg lifts and 150 side leg lifts as well as heel slides.

Better news is I was able to walk around the house with only one crutch. It was very slow but it is a start. It was not easy but not too much pain just mostly muscle support issues. I am going to try and walk with only one crutch as much as possible this week and maybe if things go well I can be off crutches by the end of the week. We will see.

Looks like your recovery is going well...even slightly ahead of schedule. Good job walking the fine line between maximizing the healing and strengthening and not overdoing things. You'll be back on your own two feet in no time and running shouldn't be too far off after that!

From ArmyRunner on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 00:03:44

Thanks Dale, I am trying to keep it gradual but at the same time I am doing as much as I can that hopefully does not put me at risk. I am following what the PT tells me and making sure everything I am doing is ok with him. I do not want to risk not healing fully. Only time will tell how things turn out.

K+39 days post microfracture surgery

So today was another long physical therapy day.

Total of 2 hours and 30 minutes on spin bike for about 25 miles total. Also did 150+ straight leg lifts, 150+ side leg lifts, 45 minutes of heel slides, and increased weight on the 7 strength machines.

The best news is my range of motion measured at 145 degrees. So the first goal the physical therapist gave me was to get 140 degrees in two weeks which I made in 5 days. Then the next goal was to get 145 degrees in two more weeks. Again I reached 145 degrees in 5 days. So next step is 150 degrees in the next two weeks. Ultimate goal is approximately 155 degrees which will equal my right leg. Although it will probably get tougher the closer I get.

The other good news is I was able to do about 75% of my walking today on one crutch. It is very slow and awkward but this will help strengthen the leg even more and hopefully allow me to get off the crutches soon. My leg is pretty tired but that is ok. Not much pain in the knee, only occasional pain, which is a good sign so far.

So far so good. I am sure there might be some set-backs eventually but as long as I can stay consistent then I expect good things over the long term.

So another day of 2 and a half hours on spin bike (22+ miles)

1.5 hours spin bike at 6:00am then 45 minutes of straight leg lifts, side leg lifts and heel slides

1 hour spin bike at 9:00pm and another 45 minutes of the same strength exercises as above

Today I walked with only one crutch about 90% of the time. The leg and muscles around the knee are tired. Back to physical therapy tomorrow to work hard and keep moving forward.

K (Microfracture Knee Surgery) + 41 Days post surgery

Another Physical Therapy Day!

5:30-7:00am Spin Bike for about 15 miles

7:00-7:30am leg strength and range of motion exercises (ROM)

8:00-10:00am Physical Therapy 2 hour routine with 3 new strength exercises added today so I am up to 10 exercises on machines

9:00-10:00pm Spin Bike again for about 10 miles

10:00-11:00pm leg strength and ROM exercises again

Physical therapy went good with my range of motion improving again to 147 degrees, so two more degrees in just two days. I also walked about 95% of day on only one crutch. It starts really well in the morning and then by the end of the day the knee is very tired and stiff. Tomorrow makes 6 weeks so maybe soon I will be walking without crutches!

Walked with only one crutch all day today. It is starting to feel like I might be able to walk without the crutches soon. In the morning things feel good but as the day goes on the knee still gets tired and stiff and then it becomes more difficult to walk on one crutch.

Another long physical therapy day.

Good news is that I made 150 degrees for my knee range of motion. I have progressed from 135 degrees two weeks ago to 150 degrees today. The first goal was to make 140 degrees in two weeks and now I have made a 15 degree improvement versus a goal of 5 degrees in two weeks. I am almost at 100% compared to my right leg. So range of motion wise things are looking superb. hopefully this will translate to other good things as far as a full healing and recovery are concerned.

Did a ton of PT today all together about 6 hours worth again with 2 hours on the bike for 25 miles worth and tons of strength work as usual. I was 100% on one crutch today and I am beat so it is time for bed.

Mondays are always fun since they are long physical therapy days.

5:30-7:00am 18 miles on spin bike

7:00-8:00am strength exercises, etc... then off to physical therapist

8:15-10:15  physical therapy routine

    - 15 minutes of heat pad on knee

    - 10 minutes of heel slides

    - 10-15 minutes of knee massage and range of motion manipulation to work out scar tissue (always fun!)

    - knee range of motion measurement (reached 150 degrees today without assistance and 152 degrees with assistance; the assistance part is always fun as well!)

    - 30 straight leg lifts with anle weights

    - 30 side leg lifts with ankle weights

    - 5-10 minutes of quad squeezes

    - 15 minutes on bike

    - Off to weight machines and squat slide machine for 5 sets of weight machines and then on the squat slide machine for about 20 minutes and 4 different squat exercises

    - Finally finish up with PT checking things out and then 15 minutes of ice

8:00-9:00pm - 1 hour of spin bike for 12 miles

9:00-10:00pm - strength exercises and final ice for the night

So today was a step forward. The PT had me walk for him. I walked about 10 steps with a limp. The PT feels I am still limping a bit too much to ditch the crutch yet. So I need to get the leg a little stronger this week before I can get rid of the crutch.

PM - 1 hour and 15 minutes of spin bike 45 minutesof strength exercises

Total of about 30 miles on spin bike and four hours total work.

Today was a lot more time on the feet than normal. However, I think it was good as I think it is helping strengthen the left leg. I actually walked with the crutch more like a cane for the majority of the day today. I even walked 100 meters with almost no weight on the crutch at all. The good news is that the knee seems to be handling it better. So now the decision is to keep with the crutch or until I can walk or switch to a cane. I could easily get by with a cane but that just seems so old man like. However, it may be better. I will ask the PT tomorrow. Does anyone else have an opinion?

K+48 days (I finally walked a signifacant distance without crutches!)

Tomorrow marks 7 weeks since the microfracture surgery. Today was a good day and a major step forward for now.

Long physical therapy day as usual. However several things went very well. My range of motion on my left leg now matches my right leg and it only took 19 days to get it there. Today I walked without a crutch throughout physical therapy and also got on a treadmill where they made me 30lbs lighter and had me walk normal for about .11 miles. Then to top it off I walked out to my car after physical therapy without using the crutch. This felt great and the knee handled it pretty well. So a good day and I am very close to ditching the crutch for good.

Total of 2 hours on spin bike (24 miles).

2 hours at physical therapy.

1 hour of strength exercises.

Hi Ted,

Sorry to hear about your knee. A friend of mine had the same surgery several years ago. The recovery took a long time, but he is now actively competing in triathlon and has run at least one marathon since. He finds tri's to be a little easier on his body and allows him to maintain decent run fitness too. Another friend of mine had the same surgery in his ankle, he completed an ironman, so... anything is possible, stay positive!!!

K+60 Days (wow 60 days has passed since surgery!)

So, today was 60 days since I had surgery.

This is what my day looked like.

5:30am - Wake up and hit the spin bike. Did 1 hour on spin bike with the last 30 minutes adding a bit of good resistance which made me work a little cardio and actually break a sweat. This was harder then normal but it felt good to have to breath and sweat a little. Yes, the PT cleared me to start doing this a little more.

6:40am - 100 straight leg lifts, 100 side leg lifts, some stretching and range of motion work

7:30am - Time to clean up and get ready for physical therapy and doctors appointment

8:00am - Take off to PT

8:15am - Physical Therapy (2 hours):

    - 15 minutes of heat pad on the knee to loosen things up

    - 5 minutes of heel slide range of motion work

    - PT checks things out and decides it is time to add a few more activities to my routine

    - 10 minutes of quad flex exercises and more leg lifts

    - 10 minutes on exercise bike with higher resistance (working harder and sweating again!)

    - 10 minutes on the elliptical, a new but somewhat welcome addition. I am not a big fan of the elliptical but I was able to get my heart rate up to 125 range for this 10 minute period and no real pain to speak of. Again nice to do a very small amount of cardio.

    - 10 minutes on a strange machine, kind of like a stair step machine but only sitting down. I could really feel this working the quads so this was good as well because they still need a lot of work.

    - Dr. showed up and visited and checked things out. Things look good overall. However, he was a bit surprised that my quad has not responded to all of the work I have been doing faster. He said I have some major muscle inhibition going on. For now not much to do except keep working hard.

    - 45 minutes or so on the weight machines and sliding squat torture machine. A total of 10 different exercises doing between 30 and 50 reps on each.

10:15am - Change and off to work all day. It is at least getting easier to go up and down stairs now. I can actually do it half way normal just in slow motion. No real pain!

Home from work for dinner and family time until 8:00pm.

8:00-9:00pm - More spin bike and leg lifts.

That brings me to now, time to ice the knee and go to bed so I can start it all over again tomorrow. However, I cannot complain because I have to many blessings in my life to do so. This is just one hurdle to continue to overcome and it is a small burden at that!

Enjoy life and remember to be thankful for the blessings in your life!

Nothing exciting today except I had a good day overall. This was the first day that the knee did not seem to get very stiff at all even towards the end of the day. In the past as the day progressed the knee would stiffen up and things would get worse. However, today it felt pretty good all day long and even tonight it is still doing pretty good. Hopefully this is a sign that I am turning a corner with the leg strength issues.

So, I read your "hot discussion" a while ago and I'm glad to hear you are doing better. Keep up the good spirits and I hope all continues to progress.

You'll be back running because you've been so dedicated in your running. I know you'll see more marathon's ahead. Do you still have a while to live in Provo?

K+63 Days (9 Weeks post microfrature surgery!)

1 hour of spin bike and 100 leg strength reps at home

Physical Therapy: 2 hours with highlights below

10+ min spin bike with a 5K covered in 10:27 on level 7 resistance

10min on elliptical machine covering 0.9 miles

10min on strange sitting stair step type machine

Then 10 different weight strength exercises on the machines I am up to 70, 85 and 100lbs. I started at 40, 55, and 50lbs and this was tough so the left leg strength is getting decent.

Added a new balance exercises which was very tough on the left knee. 120 reps total which was very hard.

So the PT does not need to see me for 4 weeks now. He said I know all the exercises he can teach me for now and I am on my own to get the leg stronger for the next 4 weeks. I guess this is a good thing but it was nice having the PT to talk to on a regular basis. I am putting together a new training schedule for next week that should be good.

Another really busy long day. On feet all day long so used the leg a lot. Only managed to get in an hour on spin bike. However, being out and about all day was a good workout for the knee. Pretty tired by the end of the day.

K+67 Days post Microfracture Surgery

Started new rehab routine today at BYU gym. Below will be my new Mon, Wed, Fri routine.

5:00am wake-up

5:30am start workout at BYU gym.

100 push-ups

100 sit-ups

15 minutes on spin bike

15 minutes on elliptical

15 minutes on sitting bike

12 different weight machine exercises for legs of 30 reps each machine

Back on bike or elliptical for any remaining time until 7:30am

Before bed do 30-60 minutes on spin bike or elliptical plus 5 leg strength exercises

Pretty long day and leg muscles are tired but a good routine for building leg strength.

Are you able to put full weight on your knee yet?

From ArmyRunner on Tue, Sep 16, 2008 at 22:31:06

Thanks

Yes I can put full weight now and am walking half way normal. Still no running for some time.

Easier day but still 1 hour of spin bike and 100 strength exercise reps. Also did 50 push-ups and sit-ups. Legs still a bit tired from yesterday. So back at it again tomorrow.

So tomorrow makes 10 weeks since the microfracture surgery.

Up at 5:00am again for another day on the new hard day routine at BYU gym.

100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups.

15 different weight machine leg strength exercises with 30 reps on each machine.

15 minutes on the elliptical.

15 minutes on the sitting bike, pushed it and actually had heart rate stay between 140-150.

15 minutes on regular spin bike.

This workout is tough but good. Hopefully the leg will really start to strengthen up.

K+70 Days (10 weeks post microfracture surgery)

Well time sure flies as I am now at 10 weeks since the surgery.

A very long busy day at work today so not as much physical therapy as I would have liked.

30 minutes on spin bike, 50 push-ups and 50 sit-ups.

100 reps of leg strength exercises.

So overall things are ok with the knee but still not feeling 100%. I can walk mostly normal but by the end of the day I still have a slight limp. The muscles are just not coming back as fast as I would like but all I can do is keep up the rehab work and just continue to have patience. Progress is progress even if it is slow.

Knee still not stable and still having some minor pain issues with walking up stairs. Approaching 3 months and still not feeling great. Although I do have some times when I feel like jogging but just have to remind myself that I am no where near ready for that.

11 Weeks post Microfracture Surgery. Time flies. So I am at 11 weeks and things are ok. My leg is not getting strong as fast as I would hope but slow progress is better than no progress. Today was an easy day to let the leg and knee rest as it was hurting a bit more than normal.

I was not feeling 100% and I really felt like I needed some extra sleep so I slept in today and skipped the workout. It actually may have turned out to be a good thing as throughout the day my knee felt better than it has in a long time. Giving it a break couple days may have been what it needed.

Back to the bike and elliptical tomorrow.

K+81 Days Post Microfracture Surgery!

Back to the routine.

5:00am up and off to the BYU gym

15 minutes on the sitting bike. Covered 4.5 miles in 15 minutes with the last 5K in 10:08. This was good and got my heart rate up to 150+.

15 sets of leg strength exercises on weight machines with 30 reps per.

15 minute on the elliptical. Covered 1.5 miles with last mile under 10 minutes. For those that have not done an elliptical this is not an easy thing doing a 9:28 mile on a elliptical. I would equate it to running a mile in about 5:15 for me effort wise.

So another workout in the bag. Hopefully one day closer to a real run again.

Ok, so I have been extremely busy and lagging on my blogging. I have not done much workout wise this week other than a lot of walking. However, things are really starting to feel pretty good with the knee. The overall leg strength is better but the left leg is still significantly weaker thant he right. The good news is walking and going up and down stairs is going very well with little to no pain. I have actually even taken a few jogging steps a couple days this week not even thinking about it and I have had to catch myself and stop from doing so. When I have taken a few jogging steps the great news is that I have almost no pain whatsoever. I will go back to the PT next week and see what he says about how soon I can attempt to run again. I am anxious to do so but at the same time I do not want to do so to soon. So I think it will be mid to late November before I am cleared to even try running again. I am ok with that and even if it is not until December I can live with that as well. I look forward to getting back into a normal routine again next week.
