42 degrees here in DC, a beautiful morning. Ran to the office, 5.5 miles. Lots of runners out there - most of them nice. I don't get why some runners ignore you when they are coming towards you on the opposite direction... you can just smile, nod, say hi... it makes the run so much nicer! Shins hurt but pain wasn't intolerable. I have a little bit of pain and maybe inflammation just above the ankle on the outside of my right leg - probably I just misstepped on a rock, so I may not run home to let it rest. Now ice, compression, and ibuprofen!

------

A weird day followed by an even weirder evening. First, while trying to help one of my very best friends get out of a funk, I said too much at the wrong time and hurt her badly. I hope she finds it in her heart to forgive me. Sometimes friends just need to talk and you just need to listen, and there are other times to voice your advice and concerns. Then while I was getting ready to go home, an unexpected event occured that made me think someone I trust was being dishonest with me. I was very upset and needed to clear my head, so I decided to run home. It was the right decision - I felt pretty good throughout the run, and decided to face my insecurities head on. An uncomfortable and somewhat shameful conversation later, and the misunderstanding was resolved.

With so many "bad people" out there, hearing friends dealing with husbands that cheated, and having been lied to many times myself, it's hard to give in and trust someone completely. But a life without trust is not worth living.

Lessons learned today: listen, trust, and run taking smaller strides.

Well that sounds like a nice run besides the new pain. And I feel the same way when I would run in the park. Some people say hi or nod. And others were in their zone. I just got to remember as I would pass someone to give them plenty of space. Boy can people really jump if you dont give them a warning. I enjoy the social aspect of running. And hey next time you pass me I will say "Hi" or even grunt k.:)

From Eric Day on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 10:54:01

So if they don't say hi, do you shoot mace at them?

From Lucia on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 11:00:06

LOL that is a great idea!

Mark, so true that people jump when you pass them, but I've learned that they also jump when you do give them advice and sometimes are even more thrown off by it, so I'm not sure what to do most of the time...

Eric, I followed your advice and went slow... the thing is, going faster doesn't seem to aggravate the shin - I'm not sure what aggravates it yet - one thing is for sure: after I completely rest for a day, the next day it hurts more.

From Eric Day on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 11:05:12

Lucia, have you tried doing shorter steps but with same pace? I know that shins & calves are different things, but that seemed to help me a little on my runs... just an idea.

From Lucia on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 11:13:14

Eric, I recently read that same advice on the discussion board and it definitely helps - making shorter strides and increasing speed of leg turnover... I just don't seem to be able to go as fast when I do that, but it may be a matter of practice and getting used to it. Thanks for the advice!

From Eric Day on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 11:23:36

On my last race, I ran with very short strides at a fast pace for the second half of the 10k. I'm sure I looked like a goose running or something like that but it felt less painful.

From Camille on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 20:31:47

Happy Tuesday to you! Maybe they don't smile because running for them is more of a chore then a hobby and they are in serious pain or something. Who knows... but I'd smile and say hi to you if I passed you by.

I hear you. Life is too short to go on without trusting the people you love and care about. I am learning more to listen more and not get upset when things are said. I am proud to hear you say fixed that misunderstanding. Happy running.:)

Can you remember the times when one's word was his bond? People in general don't care for promises or commitment anymore, hard to find them; but if you do, those people are priceless.

Glad things finished well.

Cheers, and hope you have a great day,

Great lessons learned

Trust is easily broken and hard to get back, but I always try my best. I'm glad you were able to resovle things with your friend. It's hard to confront someone, I usually can't so I'm proud of you for doing it.

Ditto the last four comments. Is now a good time to sing my song while Mike dances interpretively?

From huans32 on Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 22:30:04

Oh no Lucia. Did you sign up for the Ogden marathon?? I sure hope you did or you will be passing on that one. It is sold out. Both the full and half.

From Lucia on Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 23:09:10

Ohhhhh nooooooo! Do they allow transfers?

So is that why it says "VIP registration: $300" - you have to run a certain pace for that or you have to be famous or what's the deal with that? Or does everyone have to pay $300?

From huans32 on Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 07:56:19

With the VIP they just take good care of you. Maybe you can still get in that way. You get to skip all the lines and such at pickups, different buses. I do know someone doing that. And what is your transfer that you speak of?? Did you sign up then??

From Lucia on Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 08:43:13

I mean if someone had signed up for the marathon and they get injured, can they transfer their entry to someone else? Some races allow it and some don't... I'll look it up for Ogden...

From Lucia on Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 16:32:17

Well, they have a wait list for the full marathon, and I put myself on it... let's hope for the best! Thanks for the heads up, Mark! I didn't think it was such a popular marathon! I hope I can get in...
