Decided I wanted to run some hills today so I ran from home to the top of 1800 South.  I felt pretty yucky going up the hill.  There were a few times that I wanted to stop and rest a minute but pushed on.  On the way back down I pressed the pace and felt pretty good.  I focused on running smoothly to protect my ankle and I think it made it a lot easier to run fast going downhill.

GOOD JOB running SMOOTHly!!! :) When I feel yucky going uphill, I chant er pant (silently of course): "hills are our friends!" You probably just pump your wings and fly up the hill! :)

Nice run, but we want more swimming updates!!! Glad you felt good today.

Swimming update - Had a class on Tuesday and I think I am to the point where I just need more time in the pool. The thing that clicked for me at this lesson was to start my breath as soon as my arm comes out of the water. I was waiting too long and didn't have enough time for a full breath. I will probably miss tonight's lesson because it is at the same time as my girl's soccer practice. I need to make a commitment to going to the pool a couple of nights a week. Just need to figure out what my schedule will accomodate.

I bet you will really start to like the pool!!!

Okay ... I need some help with downhill running. Just can't seem to get my body to relax on the downhills. Any thoughts?

Teena - I am absolutely the wrong person to ask about running form. The thing that I pay the most attention to is the sound that my feet make when they hit the ground. If they are slapping the ground then something is wrong and I know I need to make a correction. I focus on being as relaxed as possible, making sure that the length of my stride is behind me (no over striding), keeping good running posture (good center of gravity while bending at the ankles). You want a quick turnover which may mean shortening your stride even though it is counter intuitive.

Thanks for the advice Andy!! I will work on my listening skills. Stink -- does that mean I need to turn down my ipod??? :)

Are you racing tomorrow??

From Andy on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 11:02:10 from 198.60.114.178

Teena - I'm not racing tomorrow. I have the TOU half next week.

I just remembered one more thing about downhill running. I try to get my foot off the ground as quick as possible. This is all part of the quick turnover but it is one thing that I think about that seems to help.

Okay ... let me see ... quick turnover, smaller strides, don't want to sound clunky or heavy, relax, keeping the right center ... oh man ... I have a lot of work to do!!!

You are awesome!!
