Met Teena, RivertonPaul, Rich Borget and some others for the ride up to the start.  Had a good time on the bus.  Paul said he wanted to run 6:40's to start and I thought that was way too fast for me (more on that later).  It was freezing at the starting line which is a great indication of fantastic racing weather. We couldn't have asked for better weather.  After a couple of POP stops, met up with Kathie, Smooth, Huans and Maynard and waited for the start.

After much deliberation, I decided that I would rather go down swinging while shooting for a great time instead of running conservatively and having a strong finish with a slower time.  My plan was to run 6:45/mile through 8 then back off through the hills.  The gun went off and my return to marathons after 18 months off was under way.  Half a mile into the race I glanced at my garmin and saw that my lap pace was 6:10.  Oops!  Way too fast.  I backed off a little but still finished the first mile in 6:17.  The strange thing is that the pace felt very comfortable.  I wasn't exerting myself at all.  I decided to just go with it and see how things turn out.  Settled into a more realistic pace and ran the next 3 miles in 6:40, 6:32 and 6:36.  Still a little too fast but the effort felt right.  At this point I got the "Lap Database Full" message on my garmin.  I couldn't get rid of the error message to clear out the database without stopping the watch so from here on out, I only have a few splits from memory.  Mile 5 was 6:37 according to a guy I was running with and I started to feel the effects of the pace.  Just tried to stay comfortable for the next few miles until the rolling hills start after 8.  My total time at mile 8 was 53 minutes exactly which means that I averaged 6:46 for miles 6-8 (the pace I should have been running from the beginning).  I felt like I backed off the pace for miles 9 and 10 but they both came in at 6:55 (10 seconds too fast).  The runners ahead of me were gapping me but I knew I had to hold back through this section.  Averaged 7:03 for miles 11-13 and hit the half in 1:28:48 - 3 seconds slower than when I ran this in 2008.  I started having deja vu.  I knew I wasn't feeling as well as I should at this point and was pretty sure that I was not going to finish well.  After the half, a female runner that had been running ahead of me most of the race went flying by.  Turned out to be Amber and she was running completely effortlessly and looked like she was having a great time.  Climbed the hill at 15 and on the ensuing downhill I couldn't get the pace below 7.  Was able to pass Rich at this point but I think we were both in survival mode.  The way I was feeling I knew that the sub 3 was not going to happen today so I made the choice to have a great time running on an amazing day and cheer on anybody that passed me.  I have no splits from here to the end.  Was still able to maintain a decent pace coming down the canyon but not where I wanted it.  Saw Allie at mile 22 and my family at mile 23 which always gives a little lift.  Played leap frog with a couple of runners over the next few miles.  My legs where completely dead but I was having a good time.  Whenever I was passed I would shout encouraging words to the runner.  Not sure if it helped them but it made me feel better.  Turned onto Grant and the nightmarishly long stretch to the finish.  Tried to work the crowd coming down the final stretch and pulled my girls onto the course to finish with me.  Crossed the line in 3:03:20 which is a course PR by almost 1 minute.  Not what I was hoping for but I have come to the realization that it is all about perspective.  I had almost the exact same experience 2 years ago and was absolutely devastated.  This time, I know that it is still a good time and can really appreciate still being able to run well.  After I finished I went back to the 26 mile marker to watch the harem come in.  Teena and Kathie looked great and unfortunately Smooth was attacked by Charlie again.

What would I have done differently?  I didn't eat very well yesterday.  I had a late lunch/early dinner then went to the Bees game and didn't eat anything else until 11.  Maybe I wasn't as carb loaded as I should have been.  The biggest factor obviously was the fast start.  This course is very difficult to run right.

While not my best performance, I can live with the result and really enjoyed the day. I feel like I am still on track for 2:55 at SGM.

Great job! Very inspiring for those of us who haven't run a marathon yet. I hoping to get under 4hrs for my first marathon.

Congratulations on the course PR. That's awesome. Too bad about going out too fast. That's always too hard to overcome on race morning. I'm glad you fought off the negativity and enjoyed the rest of the run. I missed seeing you come in, but I did get to see Teena, Kathie, Smoothie and Maynard. Excellent!

Great job today. I remember watching you pass me and my mom with about a half mile left. I was pacing her in her first half marathon.

That's an amazing time for not having raced that distance in so long.

From Kathie on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:05:22 from 63.248.105.188

Nice to see that you are happy with your time. I think Ogden is just way too hard...I am only doing the half from now on!

From JD on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:12:34 from 166.128.78.114

Great marathon Andy. Those first few miles do come almost too easy. What a great day for a run!

From timp on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:32:20 from 144.189.100.25

Great Race Andy! I like that you went for the sub 3, knew it wasn't going to happen, and knew enough when to back off and finish well. Dang - an 3:03 and a 1 minute course PR is nothing to sneeze at, right? I think last month or so you wrote this race off.

I think that positive energy you put towards the others during the race is awesome. Running can be such a selfish sport but when we give out energy and positive vibes, it seems to come back two fold...

From Smooth on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 18:43:14 from 174.23.172.155

Andy! CONGRATULATIONS on the course PR! You never cease to inspire and impress me with your stalwart attitude and aptitude, not to mention your talent and awesome self-evaluation. Love your perspective and the way you ran this *dejavu* race today. You know your body SOOOO well!

THANKS for watching for me at the finish. It meant the world to me! WAY to cheer on those passing and I know you bolstered their spirts. SGM 2:55 here you come! :)

From josse on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 20:45:13 from 75.231.15.3

You did great. It was fun to cheer you on at the finish line. I think you are right on track for a great SG marathon. BTW Amber looked likes all the time when she is running a race. She looked like she was having the time of her life when she went be me.

Great race and race report Andy. I say the fortune cookie the other day was right on.

Congrats on the course PR and keeping a positive attitude when you saw things wherent going to turn out according to plan. I always have a hard time with that. Good Job!

From Huans32 on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:40:16 from 98.202.0.57

Awesome race. And glad to hear you enjoyed yourself and that your happy with your results. You really did awesome and I was happy to see you again at the race. I find it really helps to say something to someone when you pass them or get passed. I does at least make you feel better and hopefully them too.

From Rhett on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:47:05 from 184.10.154.170

Great race Andy. I loved that you switched into "have a great time running" mode and made the most out the race. I'm sure this experience will pay off at SGM. You are a great runner, proved by your choices at the end of the race that you are a great person as well. You get an A++ from me.

From Steve on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 23:59:52 from 64.134.158.81

Sounds like my start today too. Great race! Good luck at SG.

Great running man! It was good to see ya. I wished you couldve busted the 3 hour. Its a hard last 3 miles for sure.

From jtshad on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 08:42:56 from 69.20.183.178

Great time and way to lay it all out there! You did awesome, then second half took it out of lots of runners today. Great job on the course PR, hold your head high!

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 09:38:29 from 174.52.45.85

Proud to be one of the harem!!! YOU DID AWESOME!!! You didn't even mention that you finished only 90 seconds behind the guy who took 1st in your division (and that is with you cheering others on and enjoying the end of the race). YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!

Congrats!!!

Can not even begin to tell you how cool it is to see you towards the finish line of a long race! It's a very cool "Welcome to the Finish Line." :) :) :)

From Andy on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 09:45:44 from 198.60.114.178

Thanks everybody!

Teena - That is because the results were not out when I wrote the report. Seeing that made me start playing the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" game.

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 09:49:37 from 174.52.45.85

Stop playing that game Andy!!! You had a GREAT race!!!

Plus ... you have the coolest harem ever!!!!!

From Clay on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 13:07:56 from 166.205.8.27

Awesome race Andy and even better great attitude! You didn't miss sub-3 hour by much, you will nail it with the next one!

From Paul on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 15:34:36 from 174.27.230.30

Good job Andy. A course PR is worth celebrating.

From Doone on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 18:19:02 from 184.10.154.170

Haven't met you yet but way to go!! I would have cheered you on as well if we lived there. I am way impressed with your time but also all the details of the miles that you can remember. It is cool to read all about it. Congrats on a very speedy time.

From Brent on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 19:52:00 from 168.178.30.194

Andy, 500 commando points for the age div. second and setting a course PR. My opinion, Ogden is slower than the George and tougher to get ready for, you did great, especially, finishing on tired legs, hanging on.

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

From Mike Warren on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 10:47:46 from 208.117.124.133

Impressive! I love the attitude, go out trying for something special and still hold on when it didn't turn out perfect. Awesome time on a tough course, nice job.

From MarkP on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 11:50:24 from 24.2.76.180

Great job Andy. Clear that lap database next time!

From allie on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 12:29:56 from 129.123.248.130

nice race andy. congrats on the course PR.

From Andy on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 13:12:03 from 199.190.170.29

Mike - It has taken awhile but the positive attitude is something that is working for me.

MarkP - I was proud of myself for turning off the Auto Pause before the race. Now there is one more thing I have to worry about.

Allie - Thanks for cheering everybody on. I just pretended the RivertonPaul sign said AndyB. Hope that is alright with you.

From MarcE on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 22:16:17 from 204.16.82.120

Very strong race! Congrats on the course PR! I had no idea it's been 18 months since you've run a marathon..shows you how much I pay attention. Bummer about the Garmin being full (thanks for the reminder to clear mine out before UVM). Great report, and excellent effort.
