Personal:

I am originally from Knoxville, TN and moved to SLC with Jake in 2010. I started racing in 2011 and had some great success before a major injury hit me in July 2012. I had athletic pubalgia surgery in May 2013...then again in Sept 2014 and am still trying to get back to my old self. Although running is my true passion, I love doing pretty much anything active outdoors - backcountry skiing, backpacking, biking, etc.

I've been running for the Saucony Team since 2011. I enjoy representing the brand and really do believe they make the best shoes :)

I work as a Quality Engineer for BD Medical in Sandy.

Turkey Trot Tune-Up Race! We had a pretty good crew come out this morning to race - James, Fritz, Sandy, Bryan, Chad Robinson, Jake, and myself. Cheering crew included sick Allie, Chad's wife, and Amy.

Jake and I got there a little early to find leaves blown all over one of the turns, so we spend 15 minutes kicking the leaving off the first lane, wishing we had a broom. I'm just glad that it wasn't icy! The weather was actually pretty warm (~48 degrees) but a significant wind from the south at 15 mph. The rain never came :)

After warming up and doing a few strides, Allie did the official start. I think everyone went out a little too fast this morning, hoping that the wind wouldn't make a big difference. Unfortunately, I think that wind cost us all about 20-30 seconds - definitely not a PR day! But still good to get in a hard effort.

I came into the race going for sub-18. This is far from what I am capable of right now, but the fast pace seems to irritate my hamstring tendon and the posterior tibialis tendon has been acting up. Basically, I didn't want to do anything stupid and get myself hurt over a 5k. Well, the competitive edge took over me in the first mile and I went out in 5:31. I was feeling really good up to that point and thought maybe I should just go for a PR. Not my brightest idea! My hamstring started to act up right after that mile, so I slowed it down to not make it worse. Second mile was 6:02. I still wanted to hit that sub-18 as long as I wasn't causing additional damage. I picked it up the last mile a little to get just under 18 minutes. Final time was 17:58.

In hindsight, I should've stuck to my original plan of going out slow and picking it up if I felt fine but oh well. At least I was smart enough to slow down after the mile and don't think there should be residual effects.

Overall, it was a fun event and nice to be able to call people on the blog "friends" instead of just "internet friends"!

Very cool! You were wise to slow it down and you still did awesome.

Sounds fun, if I were in town I would have probably stayed home and felt guilty I didn't come, so it's good I'm not.

What's wrong with just having virtual friends?

Had I known about the leaves I would brought my leaf blower. I look for any excuse to use it since it's my second favorite possession next to my lawn mower. Despite the wind and not wanting over do it you still ran a great time. Enjoy your taper!

yay for no rain for you all!! how lucky and great time despite the wind!! : D

Congrats on a great race! Was it your outside hamstring that was acting up? I can't run on a track fast, within a couple of laps my outside leg, hamstring, hip, Achilles tendon all get tight and quit working right for days.

great job, andrea. you were smart to pull it back in the second mile. it was a good, hard effort and a perfect tune-up race (and way to take a sprint at 2 and three-quarters).

thanks for letting me be the photographer again (james likes the ones where it looks like he is ahead of jake). hopefully i won't be dealing with garbage legs or garbage lungs and i can actually join you guys next time.

i'm excited for you next weekend. it's finally time and you are ready to go!

From Burt on Sat, Nov 12, 2011 at 21:26:24 from 174.255.245.73

At least you got a PR on leaf kicking. 15 minutes for 1the lane is very respectable.

Glad allie was able to help out. All that butter must've done her a lot of good.

A good workout. Smart to not chase the pr. whats the weather in philly expected to be?

I'm SOOOOOOO excited for you next weekend. You are in amazing shape and strong and fast right now. You've got it. You've totally got it. You're an inspiration.

From Andrea on Sun, Nov 13, 2011 at 10:14:05 from 67.177.21.60

Thanks guys.

Dale - nice run for you too yesterday! Way to get those miles up.

Rob - you can't invite yourself over to an internet friend's hot tub, but you definitely can if you've met them at least once :)

Fritz - leaf blower would've come in handy. You will be the go-to if my 4x4 ft space outside starts looking too leafy (and blow it all over to the old lady neighbor who we caught throwing her pine cones in our yard!).

Dragonvulture - it's actually the inside leg. It has been irritated for about 6 weeks, getting better, but anything faster that half marathon pace bothers it. Yours sounds like it's more due to the track turns - weird.

Allie - Jake especially did not like the photo where he looked like he was behind James. Big surprise there.

Burt - big PR on the leaf blowing! Although my hips were sore afterwards.

Michelle - weather looks awesome. 41 low, 57 high, minimal wind and cloudy.

Emily - I looked at what you did yesterday and was disappointed/jealous that I couldn't run with you guys. I must've really turned into a marathon runner!

That's not true, I met my wife on Match.com and didn't actually see her until our wedding day.

Great race for a tuneup! Excited to see how your marathon goes!

Andrea, Fast start or fast finish you still made your sub-18. I hope everything is still feeling good and that you are 100% for this weekend. Enjoy the rest and have a safe flight.
