The day is still young.
You have been around a while...why is the stationary bike suggested as cross-training as opposed to an actual bike that you can ride such that actual distance is covered?

They serve the same purpose, I own a road bike and enjoy riding it but prefer the stationary bike if I'm not going to be riding for 2+ hours. It's not really worth the effort to do all the bike checks, and load the water bottles etc. if I'm doing a short ride.
For me, the stationary bike is better because it allows for continuous pedalling and I can work up a good sweat quicker than I could riding outside.
Also, I feel like it stretches my lower legs and hamstrings without real impact to my feet or joints. On most machines, you can watch your RPMs and try to keep it around 90 which apparently is the most efficient stride rate for runners.
Hopefully that answered your question.

It did. Had no idea. Surprisingly, a harder workout with the stationary bike with less impact to the body it sounds like. And I also had no idea that it could actually help with stride rate...that is very interesting!

Burt,
I'm like a blend of Chuck Norris and the Dos Equis guy.

Burt,
Point well taken. I'm easily influenced.
