For some reason I accepted Steve's invitation to a brutal beat down up the ampitheater rock trail this afternoon.  I'm glad I did..it was fun, at least for the masochist inside me that is only allowed out to play once or twice a year.

We jogged up the first quarter mile up the amp. trail until it starts to get really steep, then we made that our starting point for a 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 min. interval workout.  We went up and down for those intervals with a 1 to 3 minute rest at the bottom between intervals.

WOW - I would not have made it through that workout on my own I don't think.  Mentally it was pretty tough to get started on the 4 and 5 minute sections.

But it felt great to actually do it and bust out a solid workout.

Definitely the hardest 3 miles of running I can ever recall doing.

Totals:

  • 4.5 miles including a very 3/4 mile warmup and cool down.
  • 2630 Feet ascent/descent (that's a 22% avg grade up and down by my calculations...ummm...kind of steep running)
  • 147 Avg HR including all the rest minutes
  • 1:25 total time (including 23 minutes of stopped/rest time)

Steve was great to run with on these intervals.  I was able to out sprint him at the end of most of the shorter ones, but he had me beat on the longer 4 and 5 min. intervals.  It was great to have him up there as a target on the longer ones.  I went out much slower than him on those and was able to nearly reel him in each time except the 2nd 4 min. interval in which he killed it and went strong the whole way.

On the last 1 minute interval I went completely all out from the get go, and was flying, and stumbling a couple times on the steepest parts, and after 30 seconds everything went on fire and I thought I would be stopped in my tracks.  But I kept pushing for fear of getting caught by Steve, and apparently he hit the wall at 45 seconds and I was able to keep quite the gap on the last lap.

It was super fun and motivating to have someone to push and be pulled/pushed along by...thanks for the invite and the butt kicking Steve!

Now that I'm sitting here...I realize I need to get out and shake out the legs for a couple more miles of flat stuff to loosen up and get out some of the lactate.  That was pretty intense.  On the initial descent on each interval, the legs felt kind of like jello, but it was good practice to run moderately fast down as well.

Good times....and WOW!  How about the weather in December in Boulder today?!?!  Absolutely stunningly gorgeous...we were out there in shorts and t-shirts on a 50 degree afternoon in the sun and dry trails.  So awesome.

A ranger informed us a mother black bear and her cub were lingering at the trail head a quarter mile down the trail and that if we saw them, just to make a lot of noise.  I don't think with all my wheezing, grunting, and heaving they were going to be coming anywhere near where we were though.

Saw JV running up the trail at one point looking strong.

****Later

Ran a shake out 3.4 miles and was surprised by the contrast and how easy it felt.  I ran up Table Mesa to the end before it starts up to NCAR and back home - 340' of elevation gain over about 1.5 miles, and was surprised at how easy it felt to run up that in the 7 to 8 min mile range.  Then coming back home 1.8 miles in 6:00 flat pace felt almost effortless.  Kind of cool what a brutal workout will do to the mind/body in making other stuff seem really easy. 6:58 pace for 3.4 miles...I intended to go for a really easy few mile additional cool down, which would normally be 8:30/mile over that ascent/descent, but that pace felt smooth and easy so I just went with it...kind of a cool feeling.  I like the immediate result of the hard hill workout...I guess we'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Is it really December? The weather would sure have me thinking otherwise...sunny and gorgeous in the mountains today in Boulder.

I finally got around to tagging the 3 Boulder peaks today and had a fun time.  Steve came along and was gracious enough to wait for me at the top of all the summits and various other times.

Steve and some hikers on S. Boulder peak

The view West from Bear Peak with me obstructing the view

Steve and a random dude on top of Green

Right from the start of the climb up the front side of Green mountain my calves started screaming at me.  They felt like they were so tight they would either explode or lock up, so I suffered through about 24 minutes of pain until they finally started loosening up around the greenman junction.  Ouch.  I guess the hill sprints on Thursday were still taking their toll, and I definitely needed more warmup before launching up one of the steepest hills in town.

Oh well..getting beyond that, I found a decent enough rhythm on the top section up to green mtn.

After that my legs felt pretty decent, but lacked any real bounce in the step...but I was enjoying myself a lot more now that the intense pain of the calves had subsided and everything was moving smoothly.

The west ridge up to Bear peak is quite the hike! Pretty steep stuff to get up to the peak there.  And I was glad to finally make my way up to S. Boulder peak for the first time.

We came down Fern canyon which was a nice change of scenery.  I wasn't sure if it would be too icy, but it was totally fine, not much ice at all.  The worst patch of snow/ice for the day was going up to S. Boulder peak from the saddle.  Steve smoked me going down fern, he is really fast going down the technical steep stuff.  And I took a super minor fall, which was no big deal.

That was a great cap off to a pretty solid week of running for me, a mile off my biggest week in mileage ever, but with a lot more vertical this week.

For the day: 11 Miles - 4750' ascent - 2:49 including a lot of stopped time on each peak

Weekly totals: 51 Miles - 11,400 feet vertical.

I almost start feeling guilty on my runs lately because it is so gorgeous here in Boulder and I keep reading about how nasty the weather is in Utah lately.  Is it really fair that I should still be enjoying gorgeous sunny weather and dry trails while all you utahns are running on treadmills or in nasty air?  Probably not...but who said life was fair?  Ok, I'll stop rubbing it in now...I do feel an ever so slight twinge of sympathy for you all though, for what it's worth.

8.5 Miles - 1550' vertical - 1:39 - just a really slow and easy cruise up to NCAR on the road, then up the Mallory cave trail until it ends, then back down the bear canyon road.  Found myself lollygagging and sightseeing up at the top of the Mallory trail because it was so gorgeous.  The trails winds up steep switchbacks in the forest past lots of really cooling climbing crags.  I walked out on top of one at one point and was kind of in awe at the views of the city and the surrounding flatirons that engulfed me on all sides.

Got a late start this morning and felt like heading to fairview for some 400's.  But I didn't feel particularly motivated, so I figured I would warm up and start going and see what I felt like doing.

After warming up I felt pretty good so I decided I might do 4 sets of 4 x 400 m repeats in the mid 70 range.

But after the first 2 sets I really wasn't motivated enough to keep doing the other 2 sets, and I got distracted after the 2nd set talking toTyler McCandless about his 6th place 2:17 at the California international marathon on Sunday.  Congrats to him on a solid debut in the marathon.

I did do a couple more 400's after chatting with him for a bit, just to round out the day at 10 of them.  I went out too fast on each set, and that might have contributed to me wanting to end it early.  I enjoyed it though, and it felt good to get out and spin the legs a bit faster.  I just wasn't too in the mood for really pushing myself hard for a long time today.

I did a cool down with Sara Vaughn and Jay Johnson as they were finishing up Sara's workout at the same time, cool to chat with them for a bit.  Looks like Jay is going to be joining me at the red hot 50K as his first 50K this feb.  Also chatted with the Slattery's a bit before they started Sara's workout.  Sara Slattery and Sara Vaughn are racing on the Boulder Running Republic team with Nan this weekend at the club national XC champs.  Should be fun to see how they do.

Here were my splits for the 400's:

74, 76, 77, 75, 72, 76, 76, 76, 73, 73

December in Colorado, you're my friend.  You really know how to hook a brother up.  Thank you.  Perfectly dumping all the snow in the high mountains and leaving the Boulder trails dry and the weather sunny and mild.  You're the best.

Today, despite feeling pretty fresh and ready to go, I still feel like Green mountain handed me the smack down.  But, I suppose that is the nature of the beast, when tackling the front side of green, due to the 2300' of vertical over 2.1 miles.  Isn't that above the legal running limit or something?

Through the middle of the run I was kind of annoyed at myself because even though my legs and heart felt relatively fresh I couldn't mentally push myself to maintain a solid pace the whole time.  There was one section in the middle where my heart rate was down at the low 150's because I was feeling mentally weak and not wanting to push myself anymore.  I think it was nothing more than mental weakness, because I should be able to push myself for 40 minutes in the 160 range at least, especially when I'm rested and pretty fresh.

But despite that, I still managed a PR of 39:50 up the front side of Green (amphi/saddle/greenman).  And I'm not ashamed to say that it is a completely pathetic time in comparison to all the super mountain dudes around here with PR's around 32.  But I am personally happy that I finally got up that thing in under 40, and also that I know that my potential is there to do much better than that.  I actually stopped and rested for 25 seconds at one point and I hiked a ton of it (which may possibly be a faster and more efficient way to get up though for some of the sections.).   But nearing the top, the last 6 minutes especially, I forced myself to run all of the final stair section, and then I kept the running pace through to the end with a sprint up the final ridge that left me gasping a bit at the top.

And just check out how gorgeous it was out there this morning!!

50 degress, sunny, calm, had the mountain entirely to myself, running in shorts and t-shirt...this December is awesome!  (although I can admit to kind of looking forward to running green again once it is snow packed all the way because it smooths it out a lot and is fun in a different way)

Total for the day: 7 miles - 1:31 - 2930' ascent (including warmup and cooldown through chataqua and up gregory a little ways)

Splits up/down green:

  • 22:27 - up amphi/saddle to greenman junction
  • 17:23 - greenman junction to summit
  • 24:56 - down

Odd 24 hours in my life.

Nan was in North Carolina for the club xc nationals - congrats to her by the way for 3rd place overall!  What a studette.  The race was pretty stacked with Hanson's Brooks, McMillan Elite, and Boulder Running company runners, among others, and the only two that beat her were Renee Metivier-Baille and Desiree Davila - and it was just a few seconds of gap between the top 3, and then about a 20 second gap to the next finisher.  My wife kicks some serious butt!

I had a stomach bug Friday which wiped me out from about 3 PM on...my poor kids had to tuck themselves in (2, 4, and 6 year olds) as I was useless, just laying in bed and vomiting.  Pretty much purely miserable 6 hours of life.

This morning I felt mostly fine, just tired and dehydrated.

Tried to get a little rest while the kids watched a movie at 11 after a breakfast with Santa.

Was awoken by my 3 kids informing me that water was dumping into the basement.  The toilet had clogged.  And it was literally pouring into the basement, fast...not cool.

After dealing with that mess, I had a babysitter over at 1:30 and got out for a run.  I hadn't eaten much of anything since 3 pm the day before...so I wasn't necessarily feeling all that energized.

But I had a couple hours to use, so I headed for the straightest route up green mountain from my house.  I felt oddly really good the entire run up, and ran every step, albeit at a super easy pace.  First time in a couple weeks my calves and legs didn't feel kind of sore climbing.  I just locked into a 145 HR and motored up the trail, and thoroughly enjoyed how smooth and effortless the ascent felt.

But by the time I was half way down, my body was telling me it was kind of cooked.  Not enough calories in the system, so the last few miles at 6:20-30 pace took a lot more effort than it normally takes coming down them at 6:00 pace.

11.5 mile run - 2 hours even - 10:30avg - 2600' vertical - 138 HR avg - made it up to the four-way 1/4 mile from the top of green in 1:10 - and had to turn around because I needed to be home in 2 hours.  Timed it perfectly.  I think I can make it up green and back home in 2 hours on a good day.

On a negative note, my sweet little green MT101's uppers are already coming apart after only 160 miles on the pair, that's lame and unfortunate.  Such a great shoe, but it looks like the uppers are going to blow out pretty quick.

The best December weather ever just continues forth...beautiful 50 degree sunny, calm morning again.  Shorts and a t-shirt were comfortable.

Really slow and easy 7 miles, up Skunk Canyon, across the Mesa Trail, Down McClintock trail. First time on McClintock, really like that trail.  It winds right below Chataqua but you feel totally enclosed and secluded until all of a sudden you pop out in a neighborhood at the bottom and look around and realize there were houses on both sides of the gorge all the way along.

1:19 - 1100' vertical. - Very nice leg recharging run.  Pace was really, really slow and leisurely the entire time.  I'm liking the Monday slow recharge runs a lot lately, they tend to be very rejuvenating.  And its really easy to just get lost in the enjoyment of movement through the forest single track.

Nan posted a really nice report here of her race at the Cross Country Club Nationals last weekend.

Was going to head to the track this morning...but Bryce's post knocked some sense into me and made me realize it would be a LOT more fun to do a fast run through the hills on the trails than running in circles on a flat track.   It was a good decision...it was fun to run those trails fast for a change.

I decided to do the exact same loop as I had done yesterday and see how much faster I could do it.  Yesterday I was purposely going really slow, and I thoroughly enjoyed the leisurely pace.

Today I did the same seven mile loop in about 28 minutes faster.  Whoa!  I must have either been pathetically slow yesterday (yes), or really fast today (by my own standards, yes, not by many others I'm sure).  I did cut out 60 feet of vertical today though by bypassing one hill by the cemetary.  That would have added a minute or so to the time I bet.

I did the 7 mile loop today in 51:10 - 7:19/mile avg - 1025' vertical - 162 HR avg  - I felt really strong, and feel pretty dang good about that effort, since that is faster than I usually run a flat 7 miles.  But I was definitely pushing hard from about mile 1.5 on.

Yesterday my time was 1:19 - about 11:17 avg/mile with 1085' vertical.

Here's the profile of the course, its a pretty nice little course with a 1 mile flat warmup to the trail, then up for 2 miles, and mostly down for the rest with a couple minor hills toward the end.  I ran up skunk canyon, across the mesa trail, and down McClintock trail.

Did 2.5 miles afterward to cool down bringing the total for the day to 9.5 miles and 1150' vertical.

I think I'll do easy running the rest of the week to save some energy for Chubby Cheeks this weekend.

Nick C really knows how to throw down a cool get together.  Thanks a ton Nick for planning/hosting that run today.  I had a really great time cruising the trails out your doorstep.  Such awesome and plentiful miles of singletrack...stunning views, really cool day!  And what kind of magic trick did you pull to prepare such amazing Dec. 18th trail running weather?  And thank your sweet wife from me for allowing her home to be ransacked by a horde of stinky runners.  Really great running and hanging with you and everyone else today.

Here's the re-cap from today's Chubby cheeks 50K:  A perfect day of running amazing trails with a bunch of cool people.

I didn't end up doing the whole 50K because I was a bad navigator.  I picked up Tim and intended to get us up there for the 8:00 am start, but we missed a turn and didn't get to Nick's house until 8:20 so we ended up starting with the 9:00 am group.  We opted for the 'marathon' route instead so as not to arrive back when everyone was heading home...I was fine with that actually, because 25 miles would be sufficiently fun.

The 9 am start group was Tim and I, along with DakotaScott J, and Justin.  Also, some other locals from FoCo, Nick, John, Kyle, and one more dude I can't remember.

It was fun running up to Horsetooth Rock with all those guys.  Of course Dakota was taking it easy, but also of course, after a few miles and about 1200 feet of vertical, his easy pace was becoming a little too hot for me, so Tim and I backed off and let Dakota, Scott, and Justin get ahead to the first summit.   I was happy to ease off into a slightly more sustainable pace for me for the rest of the day.

And since I'm now wanting to end this post already and hang out with my wife, here are some highlights of the day:

  • Meeting cool new people and hanging out with them and other cool people I already knew.
  • Running amazing single track and feeling really strong for close to 5 hours of running
  • Having good company to run with and enjoy the day with for a majority of the time
  • Outrunning Tim on a couple of the climbs - (I have to really soak in the glory of that since it will probably never happen again because he is barely starting to run again after a month off and probably wasn't even trying.  But hey, that dude hangs out on web pages of his sponsor with the likes of Dwayne Wade...so you have to feel totally cool if you're ever running faster than him up a hill...even if he does end up beating you by 3 minutes at the end of the day!)
  • That Maple Bar afterwards...still enjoying that one now just thinking about it.  Donuts taste better post 5 hour runs for some strange reason.
  • Feeling really good and solid after the run...no aches or pains, a nice cap to another great week of running.
  • My incredibly cute kids and wife smothering me with hugs and kisses when I came in the door after a day out and about...so grateful for them more than anything in my life.
  • Winning a pearl izumi hat for having the largest rear end....or at least being only 1 of 2 eager beaver enough for a free hat to enter the contest...whatever works!  Thanks to the judges for judging my butt the largest.
  • The drive to and fro with Tim, great conversation and company...immensely more enjoyable than driving solo...thanks for going Tim.

Stats for the day:

  • 24.5 Miles - (Four of us accidentally cut the marathon course by a couple miles, then I inadvertently added .5 on toward the end)
  • 4:47:22 - 11:51 avg - including tons of time stopped chatting on peaks, waiting on peaks, other random stops at junctions chatting etc.  It was a pretty low key run, just enjoying the day.
  • 5865' Vertical (according to sport tracks)
  • avg HR 143
  • 58 miles for the week with 9100' vertical.

The 9 am wave courtesy of Nick Clark, Me, Dakota, John, Justin M, Scott J, highschooler, Tim long, Kyle - from left to right.  Can't remember who the two at far left were.

8 miles - 1:21 - 10:10 avg - 1150' vertical.  - legs feel great, no soreness or stiffness from the longer run Saturday.  I've been doing a hip mobility routine after every run, recommend by Dr. Hansen, my ART therapist, which I think has been beneficial.

Well, I wish my moderate effort on Green mountain was faster than it is, but oh well.  It is what it is.  It takes time and consistency to improve...so fortunately A) I have all the time in the world, and B) I really enjoy running, so its not hard to get out every day and be consistent.  I guess on a positive take, I have improved my fitness a lot from where I was in the spring of this year.

Today I ran Gregory to Greenman to the top and my trailhead to summit time was 46:58.  That was a steady, pretty comfortable pace.  Never pushing my HR until the final 200 yards.  Just didn't feel like pushing into a painful state at all this morning.

The first time I ever ran Green mountain in March of this year I did the same route and it took me something around 55 minutes and I was pretty much killing myself to do that.  And my legs were fried afterward.

Today felt easy and I know I could push the pace a lot harder and shave at least a few minutes off that time if I were feeling mentally into that on a given day.

I meant to meet up with with Jason S. this morning for the run, but I showed up 5 min. late and caused confusion causing us to miss each other.  But had we connected I imagine I would have pushed it harder to try to hang onto him (for at least 2-3 minutes I guess before he disappeared into the forest.)  We got to Chataqua after our runs at about the same time and I learned that he ran it in 39 something this morning, the same route.  I told him I thought I did it in between 44-45, but I was calculating the splits wrong apparently.  Oh well...it was a solid run and my legs and body felt really good the whole time.  I think that was the most easy feeling and enjoyable time I have run up Green mountain ever so far.  I ran every step, which hasn't happened for a while, because normally I push myself too much early on and feel zapped near the top.  This time I paced it evenly and felt great the whole way.

The trail is bone dry still until the last couple switchbacks that are just slightly snow/ice packed.  Wonder if we're ever going to have an actual winter this year on Green Mountain?

Did a fun fartlek/speed workout with a couple really fast dudes this morning.  It's always so much more fun to do hard workouts with other people than solo.  And it was really motivating to be trying my best to hang on to those guys, I am sure I ran faster than I would have alone.

By 'fast dudes' I mean Jason Schlarb who just took 5th at The North Face 50 mile championship right behind Dakota Jones; he also did a 2:27 marathon this year (among other really fast races he won).  And his fellow air force cross country compadre Levi Severson who was leading the way this morning and has beat Jason in Cross Country for the last 4 years, and also did a 2:27 marathon.

Needless to say, I wasn't able to quite hang with each of their respective paces for all of the 2 minute intervals.  However, I did out run them on the final 30 second interval which felt good (not that they couldn't have out run me if they really cared to probably).  But I feel like I have a decent amount of power on the short 30 second to 1 minute stuff, but beyond that I start to max out pretty quick.

We did a 2 mile warmup to the wonderland lake trails which are relatively flat, just slightly rolling.

Then we did 7 X 2 min. hard x 3 min. slow, and finished off with 2 x 30 seconds hard.

My paces for the fast intervals according to the garmin:

 5:18, 5:23, 5:48, 4:58, 5:20, 5:26, 5:10, 4:42, 4:14

The 5:48 was a net 35' ascent, and the 4:58 was a 44' descent.   The others were closer to flat.  The last 2 were of course only for 30 seconds, but hey...4:14, I'll take it!  Now if only I could hold that for longer than 30 seconds.

Totals: 9.25 miles - 7:54 avg - 650' vertical

Merry Christmas! (merry late christmas I guess since I'm writing this monday.)

What a 'mostly' great day.  So much fun to see the excitement and thrill that Christmas morning is for 2.5, 4.5, and 6.5 year old kids.  What an incredibly fun age they are.  The best part of the morning was after all the presents were opened when we pointed out that there was wrapping paper on the sliding glass door...a piece of information they had glossed over the entire morning.  We coaxed them to rip it off to reveal a trampoline in the back yard, which they were thoroughly excited by.  So much fun.

The weather in Boulder continued to impress for December 25th...which led to Nan enjoy a really nice12 miler, as opposed to last year running on cruddy ice and pulling a muscle in her groin taking her out of racing commission for 2-3 months.  And which led me to accidentally getting in a nice 22 miler through the mountains.

I meant to run for 2.5 hours because we had a plan to meet some friends for dinner in the afternoon.

But I didn't plan the point to point route out very well and vastly underestimated the distance from the flatirons vista trail, up Eldorado canyon to walker ranch, and around the back of the flatirons over flagstaff and down to Eben G. Fine park on Canyon road in Boulder.  I thought 2.5 hours would be plenty of time.

Turns out it was 22 miles with 4250' ascent.  Anyone who does that run in 2.5 hours better be on a large salary from some big shoe company.

Ended up taking us 3:31 running time, with 3-4 minor stops along the way (once to ask directions from someone)

It was a totally gorgeous sunny 45-50 degree day with dry trails.  And it was great to run with Jason and chat the whole time, and just enjoy being out in the mountains.

Unfortunately it wasn't all good...because my family and friends were expecting me an hour and a half earlier.  I totally botched that one up with a huge underestimation of the distance of the run.  And since it was a point to point run, there was no way to fix that once I started to realize that after about 10 miles in.  The biggest problem though was I neglected to bring my phone, so I had no way of letting Nan know I was going to be late, which was incredibly lame of me.  After an hour or so of me not being back when expected she started getting worried and nervous that I was ok.  When I finally got back to the car and called her to let her know I'd be there soon, she was really worried and was on the other line with the Emergency room.  I felt like a total idiot and a loser of a husband at that point for being so far off on my estimate and for not bringing my phone.  Just a simple call to her at any point during the run to let her know where I was would have saved a lot of stress for her.   Not one of my brighter moments in life.  Not on the same scale of stupid as my eagle territory running fiasco...but definitely not smart.  A very cool run, but I was pretty bummed afterward about making Nan worry.  Thankfully she forgave me and was glad I was OK and we had a great rest of the Christmas day together with the kids.

Moral of the story:  Bring my phone on runs like that...and also it would be a pretty good idea to do more research on the route if I have a timeline I need to follow.

Weekly summary - 58.25 Miles - 9000' vertical.

I meant to do a bit less mileage last week, but it turned out I accidentally did 1/4 mile more than the week before...oh well.   This coming week I'll probably do a slightly lighter week on distance and vertical.

Did Green Mtn via Amphitheater/Saddle/Greenman with Schlarb.  We're on the same routine as far as our hill days/speed days/long days so its been cool to be able to head out a few times in the past week, and we'll probably keep the Tues/Thursday workouts going and increase the group that joins as time goes on.  Its fun to run with Jason, and motivating because he is an incredible runner.

PR'd the ascent even though I power hiked most of it and had no intention of trying to PR.  I guess power hiking the steep stuff is indeed more efficient.

39:35 for the ascent.  Jason did it in high 33's today for his first time up that route.  To give you perspective, Tony K's PR up that route is just under 31, so 33 anything is pretty dang fast.

Cruised really easy down Bear canyon.  Another gorgeous morning in Boulder...(starting to sound like a broke record I know...and it looks like December might pass entirely without any snow on the trails...odd.)

Really Easy 6.5 miles - 1:07 - 1050' vertical

Went up bear canyon, across to shanahan trail to the south via about 3/4 mile of following deer trail or no trail through a cool tall grass slope below the mesa trail ridge.  Came down some unnamed trail through a valley north of the shanahan trail.  Ran in my old inov-8 roclites out of curiosity and decided those are probably going to be retired at this point.  They were good while they lasted, but I don't like running in them as much as I do in the mt101's.

Speed workout on the wonderland trail with Jason. and Marcus.

Debated yesterday on whether to do a hard workout today because I was feeling a bit off, but after some ART in the afternoon I woke up feeling really good so I went for it.

That first 2 minute hard interval was a huge slap in the face/welcome to reality though...felt a lot longer than 2 minutes.  Then beyond that I was all over the map on the intervals...mostly though I was hammering the down hill intervals and sucking wind on the up hill intervals.

It felt good to do the workout, I think regardless of pace, it tends to feel good to push yourself.  Even though I was all over the map, I enjoyed the feeling of finishing off with 3 really fast 30 second intervals to make me feel faster than I really am.

Here are my pace splits with elevation change below for the 7 X 2 minute intervals:

5:49, 4:49, 5:46, 6:19, 5:05, 5:35, 5:16

+35,  -89,   +4,   +45,  -48,   21,  -4

Pace splits for the 3 X 30 seconds:

 4:09, 3:57, 4:15

-12,  -10,  0 - flat

I had no business out running Jason on the 2nd interval, but it was down hill so it felt good to open it up...but it came back to bite me on the next 2 intervals where I felt pretty flat and weak.  I got back to feeling better again once we started going back down hill on the 5th.  He still killed me on all of them but the 2nd.  Except we stayed stride for stride on the 30 second intervals.

Snow started dumping within 30-40 minutes of finishing the workout...it's finally winter here in Colorado. (at least for a day or two)

9 miles - 1:09 - 7:40 avg - 550' vert -  HR: 142 avg - 174 max

I feel really fortunate to be able to run so consistently lately, to have fast friends to run with, and great weather and trails, and to have an incredible ART therapist who works out my minor issues before they can escalate into problems..  I'm excited about 2011.  I will start off the year in better running shape than I have ever been.  I hope to remain injury free so I can keep running every day and enjoy a bunch of cool runs throughout the year.

It finally snowed in Boulder! And I found a great use for my inov-8 roclites this morning.  I put about 10 screws in the bottom of each of them, since they are my only shoes that actually have thick enough soles to be able to do that without the screw poking through the insole.  It worked out pretty nicely to have the extra traction on the icy snowy sidewalks and trails this morning.

I ran around the NCAR hill via skunk canyon up, across mesa, and down bear.  I had fresh tracks all the way up Skunk canyon and across mesa all the way to NCAR in about 6 inches of fluffy powder.  It was a really cool change of scenery and pace on the trails.  Skunk canyon was especially cool with a bunch of deer just hanging out throughout the canyon.  Then coming down bear canyon road it was deeper, about 8-10 inches.  And that was really fun, because its just a steep, smooth, gravel road, so felt like I was just floating down it in the mid 6's for a mile and a half as a I passed a few people on cross country skis going up.

Even though it was below 10 degrees out, I hardly noticed the cold with how beautiful it was out.
