The St. George race was fun, and I enjoyed meeting everyone. I ran a 2:39:29, and that was good. Although it wasn't an all out effort. I was too conservative in the beginning and felt I could have ran a lot faster time. I had a lot of energy at the end and really I'm not that sore other than tightness in my calves. That tells me I didn't go all out and push until really the second half of the race. But I met the goal that I wanted to reach, and that gives me confidence for future races. I think my main concern in the first half was not really knowing the course that well. I ran the first half in 1:23 so that tells you how big of a negative split I needed to get under 2:40.

One thing I'm thankful for is that Ted is alright through this whole weekend experience.

The race started a little early and I was just getting into the elite corral so I was caught off guard and not where I wanted to be in the elite corral. I felt kind of sluggish the first couple of miles, and it might have been from all the carb loading (6:21, 6:18), and I didn't warm-up. I caught up with two runners Dustin and Steve that were going to pace for a 2:40. We seemed to be running great for the next 5 mile splits hanging around a 6 minute mile pace and dipping in the high 5 minute mile pace. At mile 8 starts the Veyo hill and I slowed down way too much, but the hill wasn't a problem (7:07).  I'm not sure what happened I remember just not paying attention to my pace and just looking at the hill.
The next 3 miles is a gradual decent but not bad, but I went slower than I should have. I'm not sure why we went so slow from miles 9 - 11. After mile 11, I abandoned the Dustin and Steve  and went on my own. I picked it up the last two miles before the half way point (6:11, 6:10), and was at a 1:22:59 or 1:23 time. I would need a huge negative split to get 2:40, and that's exactly what I did.

I got in such a rhythm that I felt unstoppable. At mile 20 they had a digital clock at the mile marker, and the time was 2:04, so I knew for the next 6 miles I needed to average 6:00 per mile to hit 2:40. Well, I did that and better with one mile left all I needed was a 6:20 to get 2:40.
I felt so good that for the last 6 miles I averaged a 5:50 pace. I still had plenty of energy crossing the finishing line. My official time was 2:39:29. I felt good, but I do feel I didn't go all out and could have ran faster (2:3?), but that's okay because I accomplished another goal, and there will be other faster times. I'm really not sore other than tightness in my calves, which is normal for me after a marathon.

Might want to give yourself a bit of credit and change your time to 2:39. Great run!

Hey, great run, 35th overall, great day at the races. The extra hour must be counting the bus ride.

From Paul Ivory on Sun, Oct 07, 2007 at 23:10:34

Kory, awesome race to beat 2:40 and get a PR. Now that you have run St. George you know what a great course it is for a PR. Treasure this year. How many PR races can a person expect to do in any one year?

Hope to see you in St. George next year. Your performance and your potential scare me. Awesome!!!

From Dave Holt on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 09:15:42

Good job Kory.

From Cody on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 10:41:25

You have got to be happy with that performance! I am jealous of your energy and ability to run so strong the second half. 3 marathons in 5 weeks. PR's at all of them. Wow!

From wheakory on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 11:07:33

Thanks All.

Cody: I don't why you would be jealous, because I should have done a better job paying attention to my pace the first half. Your first and second have splits were better than what I did. I was just so blown away by the beautiful scenery that I lost my focus a few times so the second half I needed to regain my focus and get serious.

If I wouldn't have gotten in the corral sooner I would have paced with you guys, but I got in the corral late and was way back. Good job Cody.

Way to run this weekend. It takes a lot to get to the halfway point and know you have to hammer down to hit your goal. Good job pulling off a sub 2:40!

From wheakory on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 11:28:03

Thanks Clyde, I really felt I could have ran this a lot faster. I had so much energy at the end. I just didn't pay attention to the first half very well. I wish I would have run/paced with Ted and the others, but I'm happy. I'll be back next year.

From Dustin on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 11:33:28

Great job Kory

I'm glad you took off when you did and didn't hang back waiting for me. I thought we were going a little slow at Veyo and up on toplike you said I was worried when we got to the half. I wish I would have been feeling good enough to go with you the second half I kept you in sight for awhile, but you really picked it up which was great to see.

From wheakory on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 11:46:52

Dustin: Don't worry about it I had fun running with you. I could sense that you thought we were also going too slow, but sometimes you lose focus. I'm sorry your stomach was bothering you. I wish both of us would have ran with Ted's pace group, that would have got us both on the right pace.

Oh well there's always next year. It was great meeting you and I hope to see you again.

From Jon on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 15:33:58

Great job, Kory! I can't believe you were running 5:35's at the end! But I think you need to change the name of you blog to something more accurate, like "Running to kick some butt!"

From ArmyRunner on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 16:20:52

Kory,

I was glad to meet you and have you stay with me in Cedar City. You ran great and achieved a great goal of braking 2:40. However, I am much more impressed with the 5:30s you hammered out the last 5k. With this in mind I really do believe that you have much more in you. I truly believe after some good long winter weekly miles you will be ready for a sub 2:30 next year. I think this is well within reach and you should truly go after that and even more for 2008! I look forward to watching your training and seeing you at future races as well.

From wheakory on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 17:43:49

Thank Jon: I knew I was close to 2:40 and I had so much energy at the end my legs felt so fresh. But you even did a better job in TOU, because your splits were very consistent. Great Job in TOU. I need to learn to run a better first half. I always like to play Devil's Advocate in my running.

Ted: your a world class gentlemen and it was wonderful getting to know you. I was very very upset that I didn't make the dinner party and felt I let everyone

down, because everyone has encouraged me so much.

If any of you ever need a place to stay in Pocatello your all welcomed.

Kory, I am so very impressed and amazed. Three marathons is 5 weeks...2 consecutive PR's capped off with a huge 2:39! Great running my friend. Keep up the hard work. Let's try to hook up for some training runs this winter or next spring and set our sights on another great year!

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 09, 2007 at 10:45:26

Thanks Jeff. That would be great to hook up and do some runs. I'm so excited and motivated to get faster right now, because I felt so good after ST. George knowing I could have ran it faster.
