Today was a strange run... originally I was going to do a 5  mile tempo, but last night I decided to change that to a 5 mile marathon pace run.

I got to bed early last night and actually got over 8 hours of sleep, and woke up late, so I was hurrying out the door for my run.  After the first warm-up mile of 6:55, I didn't realize that I ran the next mile way below marathon pace at 6:07, but it didn't feel that low.  I decided then to just run below marathon pace at that point.  The course was more of a gain of elevation than loss.

6:55 (warm-up)

6:07 (Should have been a MP mile)

6:01

5:55

5:54

5 :51

6:21 (cool-down Mile)

I really feel confident after this run, because I was feeling very sluggish and wore out all week on my other runs.  Tomorrow Easy run.... maybe some MP miles and Saturday 12 mile long slow run.

Totals 7.16 miles at a 6:11 pace in 44:19 minutes

This shows that your true marathon pace is probably around 6:07. I suggest going out at that pace in Pocatello, and then if you crash you crash, at least you will have no regrets. I do not think you will crash too bad, though. In Teton Dam you had a whole bunch of problems, and you still finished under 3:00 on a slow course.

Sasha that's really not a bad strategy, but I think I will try to do this in the Top Of Utah Marathon. Even though I will push Pocatello hard, why not push TOU harder and if I bomb so what. I know I will perform well in Pocatello. I've guys will be my dedication to do well.

OOps I meant to say you guys will be my inspiration to do well.

Great run, you will do well in Poky. Remember how steep that first half is, so a 6:07 is an easily achievable pace and could really leave you fresh for the second half. Chuck Engle and I went out last year at about a 5:58 pace for the first half (more of a 5:40ish for the first 5-7 miles as I tried to push Chuck hard at altitude) but I lost steam on the rolling hills for the second half (another lesson in race management for me). If you go out at a 6:07, you should have good legs left for the rest after you coast down the big hill.
