20 miles this morning on an up and downhill course. The wind was awful at about 20 to 30 mph and made the run tough. I did run some marathon pace miles, and the overall average for the whole run was 6:47 pace. But the wind really had its way with me on this run.

Two hours later I run with the Dog for hree miles. 23 miles for the day.

8pm tonight.

Well this day even gets more interesting I just ran another 1.6 miles with the dog at a 7'43 pace. My cousin bought a Garmin 301and she is in a panic, because she and my other cousin are going to run the Ogden half marathon and she came to my house saying her Garmin skipped from mile 4 to mile 16. The only thing that I noticed different from my wife's and hers was the auto trigger wasn't set. I set that to "on" and went out for a run, but I didn't noticed a problem with it. She said it started acting up at mile 4 and then skipped and displayed "distance" 16 miles. It has the latest software/firmware upgraded on it. Has anyone else experienced this problem? She's not quite experienced enough yet to know what pace she's running at without the device. I've helped her train and she's shooting for a 1:50 time.

Okay after Iooking at my blog and totaling my miles I was only 2.6 away from hitting 100 miles.  I've never hit a 100 miles and it was one of my future goals to do so in one week (now you know where I'm going with this.  I went back out and later ran 3.5 easy miles to get over the 100 mark for the week.  Now normally I don't care about bolstering my miles, but I was so close why not.

Kory,

Congrats on your first 100 mile week. Again, I really believe that you are ready for a 2:45 and that is on the slow side based on what I see from your blog workouts. I really think you are in closer to 2:40 or slightly faster shape right now once you taper.

That was a quality long run and total day for you. Just watch your body and make sure you recover from the high miles today.

Kory - with only 6 miles of tempo effort your long run was on pace for 2:58 marathon. That is very good.

Garmin 201/301 is not as accurate as Garmin 205/305. Additionally, as you know very well software can be prone to bugs. Tell your cousin to run more by feel and effort rather than distance or mile splits. Even if the Garmin is accurate, there are things it does not know. How strong is the headwind? Garmin can have an approximate idea of the grade, but it would not know to adjust the pace even if it could measure the grade accurately. What about the temperature, precipitation, or road surface conditions? And finally, what about the fitness of the runner on that very day? First and foremost is how you feel. I use heart rate readings a lot if they make sense (sometimes Garmin is way off, but I can tell). I noticed in training that my heart rate is very consistent, HRM almost works like an RPM dial in a car for me. And then I use Garmin as a second witness of sorts for pace. Sometimes it comes very handy when the race director misplaces mile marks, but sometimes it is the other way around - the mile markers are right, and the Garmin is way off.

Thanks Sasha. I have the 205 garmin and your right it's more accurate. I ran 8 miles with the 205 garmin and the 301 garmin this morning (one on each wrist). The 301 was about 7 meters off from the 205 in distance. The average pace was off by one second.

I've found with my garmin at times that it doesn't feel like the pace is correct, so your right it's important to run on feeling. I will tell her this

before she runs the Ogden Half-marathon next week (wish I could be there).

I knew I wouldn't perform my best on my 20 miler because of the 16 miles the day before, and I chose a pretty tough route. But that wind really didn't help me at all and I wasn't able to stick very many marathon pace miles. But in reality my legs were not fresh so the wind wouldn't have mattered. Here I'am complaining about a 6:47 pace for a 20 miler and two months ago I would have jumped for joy!

Next week I'll run 18 miles and run 12 at MP.

Thanks again for the info Sasha.
