Personal:

Pride necessarily sprouts and grows; a pride that can only come from relentless kneading of unwilling flesh, painful months of grinding and burning away all that is heavy, all that is strength-sapping and useless to the body as a projectile. --John L. Parker, Jr., runner/author

Beautiful day with clear skies and stunning views in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

As a late entry into this race, I knew going in that the elevation gain at altitude would be challenging after a 13-hour drive from Arkansas, and more significantly, no taper. Nevertheless, I am so glad I made the decision to run The Jimez Mountain 50, with its 11,000' of cumulative elevation gain at an altitude range between 7,080' and 10,436.

I learned a lot about myself yesterday, pulling myself out of a really dark place (mentally and physically) after getting lost and running an extra mile or so at Mile 16 at 10,400'.

Also, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and visit with ultra running great, Nick Clark, who was a genuinely awesome, thoughtful guy.  Nick, who is sponsored by Altra, won the race for the third time in 8:27.

As for me, I descended the final 10 Miles like my hair was on fire to break 11 hours, finishing 20th overall, 18th male, and 10th in my age group.

Way to battle Wesley

Are you going to be able to do any touristy stuff around Santa Fe? The national lab at Los Alamos is pretty cool as is Bandalier National Monument.

Thanks, Rob. Legs really were not responding on any climbs, so I ended up doing a lot of hiking! Feel pretty good and need to manage recovery/training effectively so I can run well in a local (Arkansas) 50K in two weeks.

I could not talk Diana into making the drive on short notice, so I'm actually heading back now. Just got up from a couple hours of sleep in my car.

That's pretty hard-core. Drive safe.

AWESOME run and finish! 21st place is very strong for someone who took a wrong turn. Unfortunately, it was an extra mile at 10,400 feet where the air is very thin and your body had to work extra hard. I'm impressed that you figured out that you had taken a wrong turn in only a half-mile.

Drive carefully. ...Dave

That's a gusty way to jump into altitude, Wesley. I meant to ask you how you were planning to do elevation training for Leadville. Good luck with your recovery.

That's a challenging race- nice job on toughing it out for a good finish.

Well done Wesley! The drive home must have been really difficult.
