Ok I made it home finally. I went up to the race start with my wife Misty and Daughter Sarah and inlaws. Bill, Charity, Sandee, Debbie, Beckie and a neighbor.  We did our waiting around and then I did a mile warmup. It was unusually warm up there. I forgot my warmup  clothes and watch so I lucked out on freezing like last year. I found Paul and lined up with him and chatted a bit. So since my watch was left, I had a plan to just try and run this race by feel. When I say that I mean, I will push myself and give myself a bit of leftover for the start. I did this and I went through the first mile 5 or so seconds behind Paul. I knew I was in the high 4's but didnt ask as I was just behind the main pack that had started to spread already at this mile. Mile two I think I was near 25 or so seconds behind Paul. I knew he wanted to do a 1:05 so in my mind I thought if I could stay with in losing 20 seconds or so a mile I would be right near the 1:10 mark.  I felt really good but felt really thirsty so every water station I really drank as much as I could grab. I was in 5th overall behind a runner from Orem area to mile 3. I passed him at this point and could tell he was trying to stay with me so I did a 25 second push and I couldnt hear him after that. I knew he would be there close so I started concentrating on my form and pushing as hard as I could on any downhill stretch. These are my strong points on this course. I got out of the canyon and had a glance to see behind me and saw that I had made up about 300 yards on him so I knew he was still within striking. I dread this section for some reason every year Im not sure why but I just cant keep my leg turn over going. I got to mile 11 which I was saving everything I had left to go up it. When I looked on a turn my gap was shortening. I thought Id take it a bit easy because I really am not in uphill running shape.  I got to the last up and he was only a block behind me. I turned and hit the last straight and used the downhill to help me go as hard as I could. This helped me increase the gap and I eased into the finish. 1st for Masters with a course record.  4th overall.  I talked with Steve after and chatted with him and a few other runners.  Oh I cant forget I ran back to help my wife in.  I got in 6 more miles plus my mile warmup to make 20. Great race, I love this one and never miss it every year.

Oh snap! Get off your smart phone!

Great time! I'm assuming this gives you the master's win?

From MarkP on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 17:36:36 from 97.117.116.43

Great job! Nice seeing you at one of the local races again!

From Walter on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 18:16:05 from 97.37.199.103

Burt, masters win and I was told I set the course record for Masters. I'll have to look it up and see when I'm by a computer.

Mark, it's always nice to see you and your wife. I'm expecting lemonade or a cold beverage next time I'm on your street which will be tomorrow on Sunday. We are striping your bike lanes. Better put the cars in the driveway. :) I don't want to accidentally put a cool racing stripe down your cars. Lol. Great job today!

From Superfly on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 18:32:39 from 74.211.21.81

Nice job Walt. That's a awesome time for an old man:) Or young too but since your really old I'll just poke fun.

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 19:32:51 from 71.219.67.82

From Carina on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 21:00:08 from 174.253.176.117

Old man Walter = very fast runner!! Way to go, you rocked that race!!!!

From Walter on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 21:12:59 from 70.199.183.206

Clyde, I don't know whether to be happy about doing well in an older age group or not. I had a lot of guys in my old age group thank me for letting them bump up a spot. Lol

Kelly, I didn't run back to help Misty last year and I have had to pay for it for a year so this year is my redemption. :) that was a fine looking rock trophy you got today!

Carina, I have more wrinkles around my eyes but I refuse to let this body think it's old. Lol. I guess it feels kind of good to give it to the old folks. Omg. I'm so retarded. I can have bragging rights can't I?

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 27, 2011 at 21:43:53 from 71.219.67.82

Way to be a good husband. I heard she was not feeling too well today. Bummer. I tried to find her in between my running back to the hotel, grabbing my "hardware" and then jetting to our football game in Bountiful. Bummer we had that game, i REALLY wanted ice cream.

masters win! great time! congrats, walter.

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 01:00:45 from 24.2.69.110

Kelli, Im good for another year now! lol She luckily had my niece and Jill from my ward to run with her most of the race.

Allie, thanks! I wished I didnt have to suffer from my achilles this year so I could compete in the USATFLDR. I may still have a chance to get some points with whatever races are left.

From RAD on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 02:09:21 from 76.27.16.189

Nice work Walter! I wish I could be as fast as this old man. A course record to boot -awesome. Glad you were a good hubby and ran Misty in! Us women appreciate those little things (as I'm sure you've heard plenty about).

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 14:33:37 from 70.199.183.206

Jon, I totally thought of you and had a chuckle as I passed those apple trees. Good times!

Smooth, I was so proud of My daughter for her PR and too see the wifey run it.

Steve A, I hope to peak around SGM. That would be nice.

JD, I am faster than crap. My goal is to be as fast as Paul though. :)

From Seth on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 15:11:52 from 67.177.36.131

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 15:35:33 from 70.199.183.206

Thanks Seth. I had the canyon to thank me fir those. I'd like to be able to bust out a 1:12 at Painters. Then I'd be satisfied.

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 18:30:19 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Jake! I felt really wiped out those last 3! lol

Jeff, we need to get our Boston list together also if youre still planning it. Let me know.

From jtshad on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 18:33:10 from 69.20.183.178

Yep, I am planning on Boston. I already have reservations at the Hilton Back Bay! Yep, we need to figure out our Master's team.

From Walter on Sun, Aug 28, 2011 at 18:35:54 from 24.2.69.110

When is the day? I will call you today! We can talk about it. How much was your Hotel?

From Paul on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 08:20:17 from 24.10.141.104

Nice job Walter, and good seeing you again. Maybe you need to ditch the watch for more races?

From Walter on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 10:21:11 from 97.162.61.89

Paul, no doubt! Especially in a marathon. It's so mental. I was thinking about how some of my faster times have been when I'm not looking or Ragnar races when I'm not guaging myself off of other runners. It's crazy.

From Scott Wesemann on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 13:40:11 from 205.158.160.209

Great race Walter! Congrats on another impressive finish.

From Walter on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 14:51:16 from 97.162.61.89

Thanks Scott, I still have to perfect this before I go off to trail racing. :)

From Lily on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 19:05:16 from 67.199.178.210

Nice job Walter. You always pull off a sweet run even when you're in fourth and not first.

And trail racing isn't all that great. Stick to the road Walty. :)

From Walter on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 19:37:59 from 24.2.69.110

I love to run Lily. Winning throttles me. :) why no trail? I love running up MillCreek.

From Lily on Mon, Aug 29, 2011 at 21:24:51 from 67.199.178.210

Well some trails are awesome. But running on super vert mountains just ain't running. Stupid-o! :)
