So ... this race did not go as I expected. It was much more difficult than I had anticipated and the wind and crazy hills did not help!! I cannot say that I pushed to my max, but I definitely did not take it easy. Sadly, my average pace ended up close to what I want my Boston pace to be. That definitely has me second guessing myself. STINK!

BUT ... even considering this I am happy that I ran the race. SO MUCH FUN to be around other runners and good friends!!! LOVED seeing everyone!!! Also a quick shout out to my SSF who appeared to get through the entire race without her asthma taking over. She looked AWESOME at the end!! WAHOO!!! To Rivertonpaul for cheering all the runners on on his home turf (even though he could not run it). And, of course, to Walter who won the whole thing outright!!! NICE!!!

Looking back there are definitely some Dos and Don'ts that I will want to incorporate in future races:

1. DO NOT go to Panda Express the night before a race right before they close (9:58 p.m.) and tell them just to give you what they have left (because the choices are sparse) and then inhale it while watching recordings of The Voice. Bad idea. :(

2. The following conditions DO NOT mean you should take it down a notch and start walking through the aid stations (periodically glancing backwards to make sure no other women are getting too close):  1.When there are not any women ahead of you that you think it would be possible to reel in during the last few miles OR 2. There are not any women behind you that you think are going to catch up. Bad idea. :(

3. DO have your kids run the last stretch with you if the race people are okay with it. My FAVORITE part by far!!! LOVED IT!!! Good idea. :) 

4. DO eat a fortune cookie the night before a race. No one puts bad fortunes in fortune cookies! Last night mine read, "Good luck will come your way when you are not expecting it." Considering my race I definitely did not expect to place. Certainly the fortune cookie made all the difference. Good idea.  :)

Don't second guess - that's a tough course in perfect weather conditions, let alone a windy day like this! Its natural to feel a little "off" right now, you have a lot of training behind you and your body needs the taper to soak it in a bit. You don't want to run your best half-marathon 2 weeks before a marathon. You'll be fine in Boston - be confident in what you have done up to and including today.

YOU DID GREAT! It was less than an ideal day to run a race and Riverton 1/2 is one of the hardest races to choose from (this is why chicken me never races it!) It is crazy hard and the wind and heat just made it harder!

It is also difficult when you have no one around you, there is nowhere to find motivation to push ESPECIALLY when the conditions are less than stellar.

Love that your kids ran in with you, that is a good feeling!

Rest up and BOSTON is going to be GREAT. I need your number so i can get updates! I will be at work so I can not track online, but I will be carrying my phone no matter what. Honestly, I am considering taking that day off so I cant rack!!!

Okay, even though there is a big part of me that wants to second guess my Boston intentions I am going to consciously choose to go with your experience instead! Seriously, thank you. :)

A young man by the name of Atsedu Tsegay ran the half-marathon in 58:47 this morning in Prague, #4 all-time. He is running the Paris marathon in 2 weeks. The immediate reaction on the web was "amazing race, but he has no chance in Paris now." Unfortunately, its probably true. Not even the best of the elites can bust out a fantastic half-marathon so close to their goal marathon. Most of the time its really hard to run much faster than marathon pace for 13.1 this close to the marathon. You have to have faith in what you have done and that it will "click" on race day. If you look at today as a really good workout that accomplished the goal of building you up even more towards the marathon (as opposed to breaking you down), then you'll be good to go... stick to the original goal - you can do it!

58:23 is the world record - that's 4:27 pace on a non-aided, loop course. Its almost ridiculous to even think about.

I totally agree with what Jake & Kelli and everyone else said. It really is a tough course and the headwind was just nasty. I really think you are 100% capable of running the pace you ran yesterday or even faster at Boston.

You really should stick with me at Boston (7:45 pace) you are totally capable. And by the way it was so so fun to meet you in person. You are so cute and I am sorry I didn't get to talk to you longer. :)

Teena--- wise advice so all I have to add is-- no worries!! your number looks and feels lucky to me!! and glad you learned a valuable lesson of eating fast food late at night before a race. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as I forecast a tail wind in to the city!! GREAT JOB and glad you placed!! Those wheels were cool!!!

Good race. Running a hilly and windy half two weeks before your marathon at MP? Sounds perfect. All I would add to any of the above is that you've done some hard training, don't forget that affect. I've run some slow races this year because of distance training I was doing. Your taper will bring some speed.

Don't skip it. Been there, done that. A few times. You will then be running your marathon on the same legs.

Cut mileage, but add some fast workouts. The best person in the country to ask for a quick schedule for your two week taper would be Rob Murphy. Send him a note

Nicely done, Teena. I knew you'd do well. I've heard that is a tough curse and you ran it well even in strong winds.
