My first (albeit homemade) sprint triathlon! :)

I was riding the upright bike this morning reading a book when I thought to myself: "Hey ... why don't you shake it up a bit and do a sprint. I quickly reviewed the distances in my mind to see if I had time (I had only scheduled 90 minutes in for a workout) and it seemed that I might just be able to pull it off.

I didn't want to push too hard, but I wanted to put in a decent effort. I know that it is customary to start in the pool but I didn't decide this until I was 20 minutes into my bike ride. :)

20K Bike / 41:34

750 m Swim / 18:08

5K Run / 25:45 (** Dang, it is still very painful to run without NSAIDS -- I hadn't originally planned on any running so didn't take any ibuprofen. I struggled to keep this slower than marathon pace. Oh well -- so it goes.)

TT: 85:27 (this does not include transition times - which I didn't keep track of)

Overall Place: 1st!!!!! :) :) :)

Awesome!! I like this idea a whole lot!! Although I am with Rhett, it is really NOT a good idea to run with NSAIDs on board. Not only can you hurt yourself more (because you mask the pain), but it is SUPER bad on your kidneys (seriously bad): http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0NHG/is_3_17/ai_n13467250/

Hey there Bonnie!!! How are you?

Read the LONG article!!! Seriously, one of the best articles in regards to NSAIDS (if not the best) that I have ever read. I must admit, however, not sure I would have got much out of it had I not taken organic and bio chem recently. :) Thank you so much for sharing it with me. It definitely has me thinking more long term. One thing that I did not know was the correlation between them and hyponatremia. I am almost certain that is what happened to me at the Boston Marathon. Interesting.

I know much better than running with them in my system (thanks for the reminder Rhett). In my defense I have to say that I am using them sparingly compared to what I have done in the past -- but obviously need to do much better than I am presently.

How did I miss your comment? I have been thinking a lot about you and Doone and wondering how everything is going.

I know I know I know. Dang me!! I just have this stupid inflammation in my leg that I can't seem to get rid of. When I run w/o the ibuprofen it hurts pretty badly and proceeds to hurt for days. Yet, if I take ibuprofen about an hour before the run the pain is so minimal and my leg feels fine afterwards. DANG!!!!

Thanks for the reminder though. I know you are right (as always). :)

Hi Teena, I am great. Lucky enough to be able to work for a month from the cool mountaintops of Flagstaff!! Things are good!

The article was long, and difficult, and they were talking mainly about Cox2 inhibitors (the prescription kind) -- but with respect to being metabolized by the kidneys these are the same as Cox1 inhibitors (this is in contrast to Tylenol which is metabolized by the liver and can be dangerous when taken when running also). I used to use NSAIDs a lot too, until I got severe colitis from them ... now I try really hard not to use them. There have been other studies that show that you don't heal from the chronic type injuries as well when you take them ... they help in the shorter term, but often not in the longer term.

What is up with your leg??? We need to find out what type of biomechanical weirdness is causing it so you can run healthy!! You are such a talented runner (and super-mom as well), I can't wait to see you tear up the roads again!! Healing thoughts coming your way. And again, great workout!

Awesome job on the sprint tri. And doing it like that sure made it interesting I bet. A good brick to practice is going from the bike to the run. To get you use to the jello legs. That will should fade about .5 or so into the run for me normally. Well with the tri bike I dont get them any more it seems. But enough of about that. You did awesome and FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!! Gratz!!

Way to go Teena!! Awesome first place finish!! : D. I agree about the NSAIDS. Whenever I took them with running (which was rarely and now never) I would bleed from my stomach. The latest time I took them while running was in the 50 miler every three hours I took 3. Not good--interesting about the hyponatremia since after my last dose I got a huge headache and nausea then delirious. Sooooo heal naturally. We can do it. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Julie - I had a similar experience at Boston (but I will never admit how many meds I had in my system). I am taking very minimal now, but I need to take none. Working on it! :)

LOVE it! How fun to do your own sprint tri!! I've never measured it all out - I just do whatever, but have done all 3 in one day at the gym. It's fun to shake it up a bit.

I'm sorry you're still having pain while running, but you had a nice pace on the 5K WITH pain!

Seriously - a spur of the moment sprint triathlon. You are putting some of us to shame. Congrats on 1st place. It sounds like a great race. I am sorry your leg is still giving you fits. I know I am speaking to a brick wall when I say "try to rest and take care of it" because I get the same response from Rhett when he gets hurt.

I wish I would have time to stop and visit while in Utah but me and the kiddos needed to get home before I had a complete meltdown.

I had some seriously nasty effect from too much NSAIDS last year with the foot injury, so just be careful! I do think some people tolerate it better than others!
