Pretty happy with my place today in the Hurricane Half marathon. My time was 1:19:10, only 15 seconds faster than last year.  However, I finally broke my streak of running races slower than last year.  The last two 10ks I've run have been 1 min slower than last year. So finally with today's race I'm passed that.

The event seemed well organized, and everyone from the group did really well.  It's really exciting to see so many people improve.

So here's how the race went down:

1. 5:59 - Started off and kind of just held back to see what was going on. Dustin, Ryan, John Araujo From San Diego, Me and some other guys all hanging out.

2. 5:47 - Trying to figure out what pace to settle into.

3. 5:57 - John Araujo started pulling away a little from Ryan and I

4. 6:14 - Rolling hills - Each hill we went up Ryan would pull away from me.

5. 6:06 -

6. 6:12 - Started into more climbing. Tried catching John and got ahead of Ryan a little bit. Once I got up to John he picked up the pace and Ryan came by me as well.

7. 6.48 - chasing John and Ryan - probably back 15 seconds

8. 6:19 - 3/4 of the way through this mile we started down the hill into LaVerkin. Trying to pick up speed but John and Ryan kept dropping me more.

9. 5:31 - Still getting dropped - back a good 20- 25 sec.

10. 5:41 - Saw that I was starting to make some progress on the guys once we hit the flat. A Special Thanks to Mike for Yelling At Me During The Race!

11. 6:19 - Getting a little closer.

12. 6:13 - Crossed the bridge from Hurricane into LaVerkin started heading up into Hurricane. Only about 1-2 seconds behind Ryan - I was having a hard time mentally and physically shifting gears to get passed him so I kept telling myself  I could win the race and decided to do "The Crazy Man Grunt" to shock my system out of my funk. So at 12.5 I yelled out with the loudest GRUNT I could muster and threw myself into a surge. I think just about freaked Ryan out. He probably thought I was dying and By the time he realized I was OK I was passed him going for John about another 7 sec in front.

13. 5:55 - At the 12 mile marker I caught John and just started going as fast as I could. With about 200 M to go I turned around to see if I had time to put my singlet on. Ryan and John finished just a few sec behind. It was a great race. John is an amazing athlete for his age 50 - 54.

Overall I was really happy with the race. I think my endurance has really improved, I hope my speed will continue to pick up as well.

1st place overall- Beauty! Love the Grunt!

From MichelleL on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 00:16:20

Great job Steve! Congratulations on beating last year and for the first place finish. It shows real strength to come from behind. I love the grunt technic. Josse and I were just discussed this morning how just about everything short of tripping someone is fair in a race.

From Jon on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 00:31:34

Michelle- remind me not to run near you two just in case you change your mind about the tripping.

From Carrie on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 00:34:47

sweet race! can you teach the rest of us that grunt thing? or is that a steve secret weapon? congratulations!!!

From Jody on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 00:55:34

Congratulations on the win!! I am going to have to work on my grunting!

From Lybi on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 01:07:16

Hahaha! Awesome grunting action there, Steve. Wish I could've witnessed that. Congrats on the big win and getting back into the groove. Watch out everyone, Steve is on the LOOSE!

From Christi on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 02:28:03

CONGRATS STEVE! You've earned this win- way to go! (I may even try grunting next time...)

From MarcieJ on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 09:14:35

Wait to go Steve, you really had a great race. Wow you have got some kick (and grunt:)at the end. You rock!!

From jtshad on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 09:45:05

Congrats on the win! What a strong strategic race. I also have used grunting or loud breathing to get/keep me in sync and running strong. It really helps to keep your breathing and diaphram working together (plus it can scare the competition...way to be the intimadator!).

From Brent on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 11:13:48

Hoop - what I really like about your race report, you raced the runners ahead of you. 1,000 commando points for the effort and win. Hey, we need a runners workshop on grunting.

Stay Kool, Hu Rah Grunt, B of BS Rools out

From Dustin on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 11:26:21

Great Job Steve. I think if I remember correctly, right before the gun went off I told you, you better go out and win this thing. Great effort and especially feeling stronger at the end. Hopefully, things will slow down a little this week for you and you can get in another good week of training. Kendra seemed to be in good spirits, but is probably ready to have the baby anytime, hope all goes well. If you need any help with anything just give us a call.

From Superfly on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 12:20:05

Good job Steve. Way to dig it out and come from the back to win. I hate to say it but it's about time you pushed out a good race... Your hard work and training are paying off- keep it up and make this coming week count.

From Sunny on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 12:51:41

Great job at taking the race! You did excellent! It was good to see Kendra and the kids too.

From Mik'L on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 12:56:41

Great job Steve! I'm glad your hard work is paying off!

From ryan on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 19:47:56

great race steve. it was different for me to be up running with you in one of these longer races. you ran strong at the end and you deserved to win.

is anyone doing the 50 k that is coming up? it sounds like it would be fun to be involved in.

From wildbull on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 20:58:36

From Runnman on Sun, May 04, 2008 at 23:37:43
