Running Accomplishments:

From 10/2009 to 12/2010, I ran a marathon each month - completing 15 marathons, 1 50k, and 1 33 mile "endurance run" -- I had a great time, learned a lot, met a bunch of fantastic people and developed some mental toughness.

My PRs at various distances:

  • 5k: 22:57 (7/11/11 - Cul-de-Sac)
  • 10k: 45:25 (5/15/11 - Carytown)
  • 15k: 1:19:03 (1/27/08 - Frostbite)
  • 10mi: 1:25:31 (8/29/10 - Annapolis)
  • 20k: 1:36:49 (8/14/11 - Leesburg)
  • Half: 1:44:18 (2/27/11 - Colonial)
  • Marathon: 3:53:53 (12/5/10 - Las Vegas)
  • 50k: 5:14:59 (11/13/10 - Rosaryville, MD)

15 states (plus DC) done: DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, MD, MI, NC, NV, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WA, WV

Short-Term Running Goals:

2013:

  • 8/24: Cove Island Marathon - Stamford, CT
  • 10/13: Atlantic City Marathon - Atlantic City, NJ
  • 11/16: Richmond Marathon - Richmond, VA
  • 12/14: Rocket City Marathon - Huntsville, AL

2014:

  • 11/2: New York marathon (deferred)

Long-Term Running Goals:

  • 50 States (15 + DC done)
  • Pikes Peak
  • Comrades

I'm not sure if this belongs in a Running Goals section, but I'd like to do a triathlon. I'm not much of a swimmer, so this will be a quite a stretch for me.

Personal:

I am married with two boys ages 13 and 14. They are very supportive of my running, allowing me plenty of time for training and out of town races. We like to travel and camp. I'm the only runner in the family, the boys are still looking for the sport that interests them the most.

I grew up in Maryland but now live just outside of Richmond, Virginia. I ran a few 10k races in the early 1990s (when I was in my 20s). In 2006, a friend talked me into training for a half marathon. I finished that half then continued training to run my first marathon the same year I turned 40.

My favorite marathon was the Grand Island Trail marathon off the coast of Michigan's upper penninsula. It's a beautiful course that demands a lot from runners. We travelled to the race, then spent the next two weeks on vacation in Michigan - what's not to love?

First 3/4 mile ankles, especially right were creaky. Felt better later in the run, but not a fantastic day. Short night sleep and a few too many (5) beers may have been part of it.

What a great way to "start" the day... with a day off for me and Barbara but a day of school for the kids, I took advantage and spent plenty of time stretching before going out for my run at 10 AM. I started with my usual run up to Kroger but I decided in the midst of Wellsley, that a circle back through Fox Hall would be fun. I ended up with slightly more than six miles and just enough time to stretch, shower and get to lunch.

Felt good, although quite tired at the 5 mile mark (finishing the hill on Causeway). It was fun to push through the discomfort.

I'm testing my iPhone for tracking but alson using the Garmin.

South Campus Loop from Capital One.

Cold and windy - about 34 deg with winds in the 20 mph range.

Good run, I had trouble keeping a constant pace - generally speeding up, then looking at Garmin and slowing down ... then speeding up, etc.

The Garmin and the iPhone showed differences in distance.

Ran from Rudinos with Todd for 5 miles before dinner. Well paced run and my legs felt good. I ate a big lunch and felt pretty full, uncomfortably full. We ran in a reverse direction from our usual. I was planning to test out the Garmin iPhone app -- but started the music rather than the tracking ... doh.

Felt great. Nice weather - upper 50s. Easy pace until I picked it up on the last mile. I think I've found a reasonable stretching routine for less than 10 minutes.

It seems the Garmin is a bit less jumpy than the iPhone -- the phone is convenient, but not that accurate.

Great day - mid 60s and sunny. Felt pretty good, but should have carried water and kept a slower pace.

Good run today. Weather was warm - mid 50s and sunny. I used my older Nikes just for a change. Ankles felt pretty good. I had a twinge of pain in the right achilles when going uphill near mile 1. It only lasted for 6-10 strides then went away.

Home - GS - College Valley loop.

5.11 @ 8:10 AP - oh yeah, I was trying to keep 8:30 pace ... more work needed.

Worked out at the gym with 30 min of cardio then a 2 mile treadmill run. Felt pretty good, but needed some extra stetching before beginning the run. My right foot wasn't getting the good motion until I did a foot smash / achilles stretch with bent knee.

Lunchtime run with Ron. Ran a modified course for the south campus loop - not such a great idea since they are doing construction and have closed one of the roads. We ran a bit longer as a result. Nice easy pace.

Another rainy night, so I went to the YMCA. I ran for 4.5 miles plus another 30 min on the elliptical.

Good run, warm, evening run.

Home to Kroger, Park Terrace loop and back.

Near 1/2 mile mark, I felt a twinge of pain on the bottom of my right foot - around the arch, near the heel. The pain left quickly, so I just kept going.

Good run. Felt a similar twinge on the bottom of my right foot at the 1/2 mile mark. It was near the arch, toward the back of the foot. Felt the pain for about 30 seconds.

Home to Kroger loop.

Very nice run on a cool day (off from work). Felt good, a slight twinge on my right arch near the 1/2 mile mark - not as pronounced as the last two runs, but I still wonder what's going on. I wonder if I will have the same feeling on a flat course.

Nice, warm evening - about 60 degrees. After a long work day, the run felt good. A bit faster pace than I was planning. Felt good, a little tight, but no issues.

Lunch Run - North Campus Loop
Great weather. Felt good overall. The run on the trail before getting to roads was a bit stressful - my right foot had some pain around the arch (toward the heel), same as the feeling I get when running from home (uphill for the first 1/2 mile). I may try to use the parking lot more or a different trail. When I got onto West Creek Pkwy, there were a ton of runners and some walkers. The runners seemed to be coming from Carmax.

Home to Wilde Lake Loop - nice run after work, felt really good. I broke out the old shoes and still felt good. The shoes sound a bit different almost like coconuts going up hill. On the run, I felt a bit of pain around my right arch, similar to pains I've been feeling lately, it started near the 1/2 mile mark and went away quickly.

Capital One - North Campus Loop

Nice weather, good run. Almost the same route as Tuesday, but I cut out some of the trail to reduce twists and turns and steeper mini-hills. Ran with Ron, so our pace was a bit slower - and I think it was uncomfortably fast for him. I was happy for the restraint, the longer run last night left me a bit tired.

Very nice, long run. Great weather - cool and sunny. I felt a twinge of pain around my right foot arch at the 1/2 mile point that dissipated quickly. Kept a pretty easy pace for the whole run and felt like I could keep running for a long time.

The day of the delayed run. I brought my gear to work for a lunch run, but wound up with meetings too close together to make that work. I hustled to leave early so I could run while still in daylight, but found chores to do. Wound up settling for a quick run before meeting up with TI running friends for beer & dinner.
