Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!

The calves' swelling was almost all gone, even the bruises at the IV site faded significantly.  The calves were still a little sore.  However, the weather is PERFECT, blue sky, temp mid 40's with a slight breeze.  Ran 6.5 miles with Wendy, Carolyn and Stephanie down to the new trail by the rail road and back.  The calves' pain was more noticeable when running uphill.

Had some gatorade and a granola bar while talking to the lumbar jacks who're here to cut down the 40 trees in my yard, decided to finish the scheduled 15 miler.  1 mile into the second run my left ankle started to hurt, stopped to stretch a bit.  The ankle pain would come and go throughout the run, very strange.  I've never had pain there before.

Even though I avoided hills, it was a slow, clunky run, did not feel easy at all.  Was so glad to make it home to drink and eat.  Wonder how in the world I'm gonna run 11+ more miles and hills in 10 days!  Eeek!

From 'can barely move' on Monday, to a 15 miler on Wednesday - not too bad Smooth, way to go!

From Rhett on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 16:43:05 from 74.32.222.202

Smooth, you really have to let those calves recover a bit... 8 miles yesterday when they were painfull and then another 15 today! Recovery is as important to running as the running is. Do some cross training and let those calves recover fully.

From Smooth on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 16:50:27 from 174.23.172.155

Rhett ~ You are so right! I need to find some cross training that works since I've never done any before. I think I'll take a look at the local rec. center tomorrow.

From Kathie on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 17:00:03 from 63.248.105.188

Wow 15 miles smooth... I thought you were going to run less miles after Boston? You are so die hard!

From Andy on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:01:55 from 159.212.71.69

New things hurting is all part of the recovery process. Be careful with the calf. You don't want it to become a chronic issue.

From Mack on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:11:15 from 71.111.186.66

Nice to know even the great runners around here have clunky runs from time to time.

From Snoqualmie Ridge Runner on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:39:23 from 76.22.10.204

watch out for the "lumbar" jacks...they might cut down your torso... nice BIG mileage Smooth One!

From JulieC on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 18:40:13 from 71.219.47.74

Yay!! And 15? Who's NOT tapering here? JK. You are rock solid, you need no taper. Happy Cinco!!

From DonGardinero on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 22:42:32 from 152.216.7.5

I agree with Rhett.

You should ride the stationary bike or the elliptical. You CAN ride the stationary bike, even though you don't know how to ride a regualar bike. I promise you won't fall off.

Smooth, you are hard core! I wanna be like Smooth!

From Tom Slick on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 08:52:31 from 168.179.157.104

You might want to put the "STICK" to those sore calves or a good massage before you hit the road again. Slow down, your going to do great at Ogden.

From Kelli on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 09:46:50 from 71.219.75.178

You'll do great---you are a RUNNER!!! Take care of the aches and pains, take it easy, and just have fun in Ogden helping everyone else along the way with your smiley self!

From auntieem on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 11:29:20 from 24.18.77.246

How about some bike riding? It feels very very restful on tired legs. Even a stationary bike will do the trick.

From RAD on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 14:10:07 from 67.172.229.125

I think the bike sounds like a wonderful thing for you right now! Take care of those calves. Just my 2 cents...your ankle maybe hurting because your calves are in a weakened state. Since they can't support your ankle joint like they usually do as you run, the joint is getting a better beating. If this is the reason, you may be opening yourself up to a SF if you don't wait for your calves to fully heal/recover before pushing. Just my 2 cents...take it or leave it. You are one tough mama and push through all sorts of pain to get these runs in - be careful! Trust me, being sidelined with an injury is NO fun. If you don't like cross training now, just think about how 'fun' it would be if it was all you could do for 8-12 weeks!!

From Smooth on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 16:00:47 from 174.23.172.155

Cal & Kathie ~ Thanks! I was determined to get back on track w/ Pftiz's schedule. I'm such a slave to the training program.

Mack ~ Most of my recovery runs lately are clunky. Wish they were nice, smooth and easy instead. STINK!

Jeff ~ Oops! :)

Julie ~ I'm just following the schedule. When doing 2 marathons 26 days apart, the two key workouts were VO2 max 12 days before and a medium long run 10 days before. I missed the VO2 and wasn't about to miss the MLR.

And yes, I am tapering starting today. Hmm, actually with doing the Grand Slam, I'm in perpetual tapering mode. :)

Dale ~ I dunno, I'm such a clutz that I may fall off a stationary bike. I will give it a try though.

vinh ~ Nah, you don't want to be like me. Hey, I hope you get in St. George. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Slick ~ I couldn't find the "stick"; but I have been massaging it when it wasn't too painful to touch. Believe me, I run plenty slow. I just hope to finish Ogden upright.

Kel ~ Yep! Will do! I wanna run 'till the day I die.

auntie ~ My city's rec. center has a membership drive next week. I may take a look see on the stationary cycle.

Rachel ~ That's exactly what I was thinking when the ankle pain flared up this morning that it has something to do with the bummed calves.

I know cross training is good for me. I'm an older runner and recovery takes longer. I'm going to check out Legacy Center. Just wish there was a friend to drag me along.

From RAD on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 21:03:13 from 67.172.229.125

Smooth - I have a membership down there and would LOVE to join you!! LMK when you want to go, and I'd even pay to send my kids to daycare to do some x-training with you!!!

From Smooth on Thu, May 06, 2010 at 23:24:05 from 174.23.172.155

Rachel ~ Aw THANKS! LC is having a members appreciation week next week, free stuff each day and member can bring a friend for free. My neighbor Beth is going to take me there on Mon.

Can't believe you'd drive all the way to LC. I live so close and have never used the facility.
