Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Couldn't go down the stairs w/o knee pain this morning; so decided to NOT run.  Went to Gold Gym, a first EVER for me!!!  

35 min elliptical (resistance and incline at 6)

25 min bike (moderate hills)

10 min abs and adductors.

***Been having pain at the insertion point of the right tibial tuberosity for the last 4 weeks.  The pain would come mid run and get worse post run.  Decreasing mileage has helped some.  My son, Eric drove down from Dallas (where he's having his Residency Interviews) today to spend couple of days with us! We're sooo happy to see him!!! :).  Haven't seen him for over a year!!! :) :) :)  Between his and my daughter's exam/assessment, we all concluded that I have patella tendinitis.

Conservative treatments may include REST, DANG IT! :(, adjusting body mechanics, strengthening the quads, patella tendon strap, iontophoresis, corticosteroid injection, massage.

Guess I better be a good girl and listen to my son who advised NO running or any activities that cause pain/more damage to the patella tendon! :/

I know it's hard, but it will be worth it to not be injured beyond a conservative treatment approach. Just sit back and enjoy the family while you can! You've raised wonderfully smart kids...now YOU have to listen to THEM! :)

Sounds like you could be out for quite a while if you don't treat it properly. Keep cross-training and when you start lifting weights to strengthen the quads, start out with very light weights and over time, keep increasing the weight. Also, when doing leg extensions with weights, do it with one leg at a time. That way each leg will get equally strong.

It is very hard to rest when you get tendonitis, but at least you can cross train. I've had it in my knees, my feet, my fingers and back. Take it easy and enjoy the time with your family.

Hi Smooth, just reading about your knee injury. I had knee surgery a few months ago for a torn meniscus, so I know what it's like to have a hurting knee. My doctor says to avoid the leg extension machine because it puts too much pressure on the knee. He recommends the leg press and hamstring curl machines, plus just simple leg raises for strengthening the quads. He said do 100 of those twice a day and you'll eventually have super healthy knees. Good luck, I hope you get better fast.

Slick ~ The weather in Houston is perfect and I couldn't resist last Sat. Anyhow my knee pain started back in Dec when I ramp my mileage up to 80 then 77 then hill running the following week...very foolish!

Smooth - My knee was sore back on our run on Christmas eve but felt good enough to run. Bad idea, it swelled up like a balloon. It still isn't any better so I'm seeing a doctor next week.

My knee is doing better but it still aches sometimes after I run. I'm spending a lot of time on strengthening exercises so hopefully I can avoid problems in the future. It's funny, because in all my years of running, I never had any knee problems, no pain, no nothing really and then just one day I guess I ran too hard and tore the meniscus. I was doing a lot of hill running at the time. I think hill running is good but maybe in small doses. Good luck!

Glad to hear you know what to do to prevent future problems. I need to do more strength exercises and pay attention to the body...so much to learn! :)

Smooth--I do lots of core stuff and leg raises and the leg press and hamstring machines. Just lots of things to strengthen the core and lower body. Kinda like what Kelli does, though I'm not quite as hard core as she is. I wish I could hold a plank for 3 plus minutes!

Good stuff, Cheryl! I have been slacking on core and strength. I really need to pay attention to that as I am getting older and older. It is the little things that keep us healthy.

I am sure you're doing much much better on the plank than me! I can barely hold it for 60 seconds! Very pathetic!
