I don't know how to start this report, so i'll just get into the details.

Weather - Start - 44F.  Finish 54F, S 12 mph.

Pre race - Mexican for dinner.  Early to the start line to meet Daniel, the only other blogger from Oklahoma.  I think that's 6 bloggers I've met now.  Daniel is a great guy, really friendly, and ran a big PR today so go congratulate him!  We got up a few rows back from the starting line and were off right on time.

The course - Basically a 2-loop course.  The first with the half-marathoners, to the south of downtown, and the second loop is to the north and east - just the marathoners obviously.  Definitely the hilliest course I've run, hillier than OKC.  So maybe not the best for a PR, as I had been warned, but not too unreasonable either.

Miles 1-5 - 6:46, 6:50, 6:43, 6:45, 6:51.  Daniel and I ran the first 2 miles together; a little faster that I was going to run, but basically on pace for 3 hours so no harm done.  Lots of ups and downs through this first 5 miles.  Everything was feeling good, way better than I was anticipating.  Lots of holding myself back.

Miles 6-10 - 6:42, 6:43, 6:48, 6:51, 6:54.  Ok, still feeling easy.  The course flattens out here as it starts to go along the river.  Split the 10k in 42:05, pretty reasonable.

Miles 11-15 - 6:41, 6:46, 6:46, 6:47, 6:54.  More flats from 11-13, nice and comfy.  Hit the half in 1:29:05, feeling really good.  I knew the second half was probably net uphill, so I was happy to have banked a minute.  After 13.5 or so, the course turns through downtown and we got some nice uphills.  I played it conservative on the ups, and stepped it out on the downs, which is what I usually do.

Miles 16-20 - 6:46, 6:52, 6:45, 7:15, 6:48.  I had to just kind of take what the hills gave me.  Mile 19 was one I had circled in my mind.  It goes due south, into the teeth of the wind, and climbs the entire time - just one long, stupid, hill.  I had been keeping track of where I stood against the 6:50 guy....pretty much 20-30 seconds ahead of him the whole time, but I gave it all back on 19.  Ok, no problem, still ahead of the 6:52 (sub-3) guy by about 40 seconds.

Miles 21-26.3 - 6:45, 6:52, 7:04, 7:05, 7:11, 7:08, 1:50 for 0.3 (6:08 pace).  So you can see where I lost it, right after 22.  The hills and the wind.  Ok, and my legs too.  At mile 20, I saw that I needed about a 43:10 on the last 10k.  That is sub-7 pace.  Why did it have to be so close?  I wanted to either be way behind or way ahead of sub-3, I did not want to have to fight for it.  But fight I did.  At mile 23, I saw I had about 22:30 left.  So still hanging on, and on pace.  But now the uphills were bringing me to a halt.  Mercifully the last few miles are net downhill, but everytime it went back uphill it felt like I was barely moving.  I felt my world slowing down - I was bonking, but still close.  My form was terrible and I was clomping loudly but still running as hard as possible.  Even so, I was mowing people down left and right.  I did not get passed by anyone, I don't think.  As I passed the mile 26 sign, the clock there said 2:58:50 or so.  Couldn't do the math.  Turned the corner and made a furious sprint.  I literally saw the finish line clock change from 2:59:59 to 3:00:00 and knew I had probably just missed it, based on where I was.  Crossed the line and yeah, I was about 10 sec slow by my watch.  3:00:08 officially.  6:51 AP on my watch, enough for sub-3, but oh, those pesky tangents, got me an extra tenth of a mile.

I don't know how to feel.  I mean my training was terrible.  It was the hardest course I've run.  But I still got a 1-minute PR.  After I crossed the finish line it was a mix of sadness, anger, happiness, disappointment, relief, and frusturation.  I can't even pick one.  Now that it's been a few hours, I'm just kinda "meh."  And if I had run 2:59:59, a completely arbitrary number as far as my body knows, I would probably be a lot happier.  Just to rub it in a little, I actually arrived back at home at 2:59pm, seriously.  But given all the circumstances, I will certainly take it.  It sucks that I will be a 3-hour marathoner for at least another 5 months, but just 1 month ago I could barely run an 8-minute pace so I guess I'm just glad I got back to normal.

Gonna take at least a week off and start ramping up (slowly) for Boston.  I need a gameplan.  I've kinda stalled out on my marathon progress at a most unfortunate place!

Thanks for reading everyone!

Congrats Joe!!! A 1-minute PR is awesome...and with the struggles a month ago with sickness, it's great to see you perform so well. Totally understand how much the 8 seconds sucks, but you'll get it next year. Really happy for you! :)

From Jason D on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 15:37:48 from 24.1.80.94

I watched your dot on my iPhone for the last few minutes, Joe. Before it readjusted it had you at 3:01-3:02, but then changed to the correct time. Your pacing is excellent as usual. You lost a bit of time at the end, but you didn't have any terrible miles from what I can see. Excellent work.

Sub-3 at Boston? Not a bad place to do it!

From Jake K on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 15:39:29 from 67.177.11.154

"I've all but completely let go of any thoughts of sub-3"

That's what you wrote only 3 weeks ago. This was a tough last month or so for you... but man, you hung in there, kept plugging along, and ran a heck of a marathon today. You were right there for sub 3. All of us who have been a few seconds over those arbitrary/round time benchmarks know how much it stinks... but then when you step away from it a bit and think about it... is there really any true difference in ability between 3:00:08 and 2:59:59? Nope. You know you are capable of it now, and I think you'll knock it out of the park in Boston next spring.

Congrats Joe - you should be really proud of this one.

From allie on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 16:10:30 from 71.213.51.40

congrats, joe! way to fight hard and run a strong race. your splits are solid all the way to the end. you really know how to pace yourself and you were right there today. it's going to happen -- and i agree with jason that boston is a great place for that first sub-3.

enjoy the recovery time.

From Bonnie on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 16:43:42 from 64.119.34.17

you were awesome Joe!! Now you will come back focused and a sub-3 will most definitely come. Congrats!

From SlowJoe on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 18:08:21 from 69.131.141.92

Andrea - thanks! whew, glad it tuned around finally.

Jason - yeah, I heard it was a pretty good app. I was glad they saved some downhill for the end.

Jake - hah, I'd forgotten I said that. I really meant it too, amazing how good the timing on the recovery worked out. thanks for your help along the way.

allie - is it too soon to start checking Boston forecasts? I gotta figure out how to make it with a little room to spare next time!

Bonnie - thanks, the mini-PR definitely give me some hope I'm going in the right direction anyway.

Great job, Joe! PR on a hilly course - that's awesome, man. Sounds like you run the tangents about like I do :)

From Daniel Brunson on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 19:32:06 from 68.14.174.169

You ran a great race today Joe! Starting off those first two miles with you really gave me the good vibes to run my best. Cheers!

From Burt on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 19:54:28 from 72.223.86.148

Way to go Joe!! Just think, if you'd run each mile 0.35 seconds faster, you would have been sub 3! Oh, that doesn't help, does it?

From derhammer on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 20:08:59 from 70.113.106.189

Incredible run especially with the hills. I think you will kill Boston. Wow - and you ran in your A5's. I was too afraid to even run my last 10k in mine. Again, congrats!

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 21:03:28 from 68.102.140.172

Awesome Joe. I was stalking, saw your time, couldn't imagine the feeling, mixed, I was sure. A massively incredible effort on a tough course, worth a sub-3 on a PR course. Hats off to you Joe, always impressive, and I appreciate the race report and the report on the feelings with that time. sub-3, it will taste that much sweeter. I have a feeling when u go sub-3, it will be well under the 3 hour mark.

From Ken Bess on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 23:14:44 from 174.52.148.34

That's awesome Joe! Congratulations!

Although you didn't officially crack that 3 hour mark, what's the difference between a few milliseconds? You gave it one hell of a run. Way to gut it out on the uphills at mile 23, that's not an easy thing to do. You deserve the week off after this performance.

From Kendall on Sun, Nov 18, 2012 at 23:41:38 from 208.54.4.212

Well done. "if only...." that's part of what makes you great. Keep pushing.

You're going to have to change the name of your blog if you keep this up.

From Dan on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 07:16:17 from 24.209.83.20

Fabulous race Joe! Thanks for the great report and inspiring me, something that hasn't been done in some time.

From Bret on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 07:33:03 from 64.128.133.66

Great race Joe - I feel your pain of getting close to sub 3 and loved your comment that your body doesn't know the difference regarding this arbitrary number you have set. Good report though - and congrats on the PR - give it some time to sink-in and then crush it again in Boston.

From Tom K on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 07:52:02 from 71.228.90.171

I agree with Kendall. "If only..." is a huge motivation. Great race, Joe!

From Bec on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 07:59:31 from 70.115.203.100

I really enjoyed reading your report. I think you did an AWESOME job! I guess the sub 3 will just have to be at Boston. To run a 6:51 pace is incredible, I can only dream about that.

Don't let this race get you down. It is a great way to start the upcoming new year and a kick start to your Boston training. Anyone that is in the 3 hour mark is an absolute talented runner in my book!

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 10:53:42 from 67.79.11.242

Sorry but I was excited when I saw the 3:00:08! I look at it this way...Now you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you can run a sub-3! When you're a couple of minutes off that seems like a daunting task but :08...nothing to it :-) Remember the journey is often more exciting than the destination!

Keep Running!

From Neil on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 11:01:08 from 164.165.24.5

Congrats on a great race Joe. I know this is relatively cold comfort but you should take heart in the fact that you competed right through the finish line. Anyone who's run the distance knows that is not a given. Those 8 seconds will keep you striving and that's a good thing. Regards.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Nov 19, 2012 at 12:00:01 from 155.219.241.11

Wow, thanks for all the great comments everyone. Some really good perspective in each one, which is why I like this blog so much. I appreciate them!

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, Nov 20, 2012 at 08:18:48 from 66.17.102.185

Nice race Joe! You ran a great race! Sounds like a tough course, especially with the hills. Just think, too, if you wouldn't have ran faster than you wanted to with Daniel those first couple miles you would have been even further away from 2:59:59 and not being as bummed about the time. You ran an awesome race and have more experience going into Boston. Nice job!!

From Rye on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 16:32:34 from 71.220.175.47

Congrats on the pr! Enjoy the time off with family and come back rejuvenated and ready for some more pr's! You are amazing!

From flatlander on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 11:03:13 from 76.31.26.153

Sorry I'm so late getting around to this, but congratulations on a great race. Ironically, Boston is a PR course compared to the one you just ran, and you will be in peak shape for that one.

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 20:48:49 from 12.162.141.2

I just noticed your Blog Title says "The 3-Hour Guy". Soon it will say "The -3 Hour Guy" !

Way to go Joe. No shame in your performance. It may be disappointing to you, but for us that have followed you from when you were "slow" to now, you're a true inspiration. Keep it up! I think you rock!

From JG on Sun, Dec 02, 2012 at 08:34:34 from 174.49.78.66

Congrats Joe, you rock! Looking forward to meeting you in Boston.
