52F, north wind 10-15.  Close to perfect running weather, just a little breezy.

Well, I won my first race.  It was an ok turnout, a bit over 100 people maybe.  Looking around at the starting line I didn't see any of the usual suspects that win these local events so I made sure to listen to the directions just in case.  Fortunately they did a great job of marking the course and had people out there directing.  They definitely needed that, as they had to cram 5000 meters of race into a pretty small area around the zoo.

I started out in 1st right away and just built a lead, maybe won by a minute or two.  Abilene isn't exactly a runner town, obviously, if I can win.  Also, I think maybe a fourth of the participants were running with dogs.  It really all just depends on who decides to show up to these things and no one did today.  It kinda sucked the last mile, because I could've used someone to push me a bit.  Don't get me wrong, I was winded but there was probably some coasting.  My last .05 miles was the same pace as the rest of the race.

I'm a little conflicted as to whether I call it a PR.  My splits on Garmin were 6:20, 6:20, 6:27, 0:17 for 3.05 miles, so it measured short.  My AP was 6:22 today per Garmin but 6:17 per Garmin on my PR in March.  However, the course had a ton of tight curves and hairpin turns that could've easily caused the Garmin to shortchange the distance, and the runner's club (that puts on the races) usually gets it right.  Here's what I'm talking about...

I'll stick with my old 19:41 as a PR as I just don't feel like Garmin would've been that far off, even with all the crazy turns.  The cool part about it all was winning anyway - I got a $25 gift card to Academy, a free 1-hour massage and a mug.  Fun morning, and I think it woke up my legs, finally.

Sweet! Nice job taking home some pretty good winners loot for a small race! Re distance, one really never knows, however I will tell you that on my 5k PR which had a lot of tree cover & a 180 turnaround, my watch Garmin recorded 3.01 ... I was a little conflicted too, until I talked to the race director and he told me the course distance was certified & it was laid out per certification. Two weeks later on another certified course, my Garmin read 3.09, and while my time was 23 seconds slower than my PR, I bonked at the 2 mile mark and took Mile 3 easy with a 6:48 split ... in other words, I did not run near as good as a race as it was much hillier, but I was only 23 seconds off my PR when I wasn't even at race effort for all of Mile 3. I can also tell you that on my 800's at the track the other day, my Garmin was recording a 5:38 pace, and I can pretty much guarantee you I was not running that fast! I ran them right on the inside of lane 1 & my 800 times were 2:57, which is more like a 6:00 pace. I find my Garmin to be pretty darn accurate in most instances, but in the end it is only a good guess, especially with a lot of tight turns involved. It really makes you sweat when you are relying on it for pace in a marathon, as I was dead on my avg pace at St. George & only qualified by 11 seconds ... my Garmin read 26.28 ... if it would have measured 100 meters shorter I would have missed my BQ as I was giving it everything I had. I attribute that more to luck than dead on Garmin accuracy!

Regardless, awesome race, you will go sub 19 in the fall!!

"Well, I won my first race." Look how humble you are. But I bet on the inside you are all excited. That's awesome! Great job.

Way to go Turbo-Joe...I knew you would do it! I think you should count it, besides you'll break that PR very soon!

From SlowJoe on Sat, May 14, 2011 at 23:21:32 from 184.79.24.255

Thanks April/Rob/DH

JG - you have me pretty much convinced. I also zoomed in on some of the curves and hairpins and it's obvious Garmin measured a shorter distance than I ran, but who knows by how much. But you're right, I hope to make it a moot point this fall.

Burt - thanks, it does feel good even if the fast guys weren't there

Dale & IJR - thanks guys!

Huge congratulations, that is fantastic. I think it will happen a lot more often soon, you are getting faster by the month.

Awesome job! Impressive first win. Don't shortchange yourself! A win's a win. And it's nice to take something home besides a medal!

From SlowJoe on Mon, May 16, 2011 at 11:07:21 from 131.59.200.82

Thanks Flat & Tracy - I almost left before the awards ceremony because the kids were whining, so I'm glad I stuck around.

From Tracy on Mon, May 16, 2011 at 11:11:59 from 209.175.177.37

How could they whine? Didn't they see their daddy win?

From SlowJoe on Mon, May 16, 2011 at 11:17:31 from 131.59.200.82

That joy lasted about 10 seconds. Actually, they were pretty good considering we were just sitting around mostly.

From Neil on Mon, May 16, 2011 at 16:31:31 from 207.170.240.150

Huge congrats on the win! BTW, Garmin isn't infallible. Just ask Sasha. :)
