Pretty good weather for this one - 60 degrees, almost no wind and overcast.  It was pretty humid and drizzling a bit but no impact to my race.

I lined up in the middle of my designated colored group - they did a good job keeping everyone with their own bib colors.  There were about 8,000 in the timed division, and the announcer said 20,000 runners/walkers overall which seemed unreal but maybe so.  My wife used the Garmin and I don't have a memory on my watch but the splits were mostly all easy to remember.

Mile 1 - 7:15.  The first 2.5 miles were very hilly, and generally uphill.  Bigger hills than I'm used to.  I thought I was taking it easy here but thought that was a pretty realistic pace.

Mile 2 - 6:45.  Whoops.  Another uphill mile and I was wondering why I was gassed already.  I couldn't believe I had 4 more miles based on the pain.  Then I saw the mile 2 marker and I was at 14:00 exactly - now it makes sense.  Garmin would've helped there, but I'm obviously WAY too dependent on it for pacing

Mile 3 - 7:45.  My worst mile, and the first part of it had a horrific uphill climb.  It barely felt like I was moving and people were passing me like crazy.  At this point I thought I had porked the whole race again and even thought of how I'd word this failure on the blog.  Still, when I hit the mile 3 marker at 21:45, I knew I was near the highest point on the course and was still on a great pace so I got kind of a second wind.

Mile 4 - 7:15.  Mostly a gentle downhill.  Started feeling good again, and hit the mile 4 marker at 29:00 exactly - see, easy to remember splits.

Mile 5 - 7:23.  Started to push too early because I knew I had a shot at 45.  Nope, not today.  I started really dying aerobically in the middle of this mile.

Mile 6 - 7:30-ish.  Making weird noises now.  It felt like when I was on the 7th grade swim team and it was Water Polo Friday and the 8th graders spent the whole game trying to dunk/drown us instead of scoring goals.  I was gasping for air just like that.  My brain was scrambled enough that I thought I just ran an 8:30 mile instead of 7:30.

Last bit - 1:30-ish.  I really really tried to sprint here but I felt like an old lady in the fast lane as people were whizzing by me on both sides.  My limbs were flailing, probably in a hilarous way to everyone but me.

Anyway, 45:25 is a great time for me.  Could I have run smarter?  Yeah, but I really can't argue with the results.  I'm really looking forward to this half marathon where we won't have the kids.  I love 'em but it'll be nice to be able to relax and get some good sleep and enjoy the time with my wife.  She was reduced to walking for a bit this time, after that big hill in mile 3 so no PR for her today but she's still in good spirits about the half.  It'll be the first for both of us - guaranteed PRs!

Great job Joe! You are looking good for the upcoming half marathon. I think you will nail it. Just don't start out too fast and you'll be good to go.

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 22:40:05 from 72.205.231.223

Really your splits are pretty even--no big death at the end although you felt like it! Great job and a great time! I agree with above, just go out easy on the half and you will be fine! It's always nice to have time with your spouse too--nice that she likes to run as well!

531 out of 8,000/20,000 runners/walkers is awesomely impressive! Great PR and your (guaranteed) PR at the Half will be a great time, I'm sure. You're rockin' dude!

Joe, you did great, I'm very excited for the race you had on a tough course, makes me want to go run one. There were a lot of fast runners in that race, but you were one of them, 531 out of 8,000 makes you a serious runner and you are only getting faster. Very soon now it will be necessary to change your name to something without "slow" in it. (Congratulations on not getting drowned, by the way.)

Vinh - thanks, that's easier said than done isn't it? They have a 1:45 pace group so I might blindly follow them depending on the winds.

April - thanks, and I guess that's true about the splits. Now I just gotta get to where I have that finishing kick that everyone else seems to have. I guess that means get in shape.

Bald - thanks man, there were a ton of people ahead of me but at least there were more people behind!

Flat - thanks - The first 2.5 or so were tough but it flattened out and went downhill after that. Definitely a good course, since the tough parts all came first while we still had energy.

Way to go Joe! You're a real American hero! Your hard work is paying off.

Thanks Burt!

OH, nothing like a guaranteed PR! I still remember my first half, my husband was waiting for me at the finish with a cup of water and I threw it at him when he gave it to me (he MADE me run the race, the most I had ever run was 7 miles). Then I threw myself on the ground and took off my socks and shoes, proceeded to sit and then step in something, moved my body away from the finish line and collapsed on the ground and waited for all of our friends to finish. I ran a marathon 5 weeks later, then I QUIT running for 8 months!!!

Anyway, back to you!!! Congrats on the race. I have only done 3 5k's, but they kick my butt every time. I have yet to beat 45 minutes. I still do not know how to run them smart. There I go talking about me again, I am self absorbed!

Way to power through the hills and not let them defeat you (my husbands favorite phrase about races). Hills are tough in a race, especially those shorter runs! Rest up for that half, get your legs back, you two will do great. And the vacation will be worth it!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 16:57:58 from 131.59.200.80

Thanks for the nice comments Kelli. Don't worry, I want to hear about stuff like that so I know I'm not the only one! I never would've thought running 13 miles would be a vacation but you're right, it is, and we are definitely getting excited. I can't imagine the anticipation y'all must be feeling this week!

From Tracy on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 17:25:31 from 209.175.177.37

Hey Joe! Congrats on the big race! That's a nice PR--wasn't your goal under 47? Totally awesome.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at your 1/2. 1:45 as your goal isn't lofty enough! I say 1:42ish.

From Kelli on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 20:05:01 from 71.219.92.128

I taught a lesson in my son's class today about ANXIETY and realized that is what I have!

From SlowJoe on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 20:47:48 from 184.79.24.255

Tracy - thanks, yeah my goal was 47 so a great result. I definitely appreciate you suggesting 1:42 is possible - maybe if that infamous OKC wind is quiet that day, who knows.

Kelli once that plane is on its takeoff roll for Boston, no more worrying I hope! Your hard work will be done (except for that little part where you run 26.2 miles).

From Burt on Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 20:56:36 from 206.19.214.144

Kelli - once you realized it did you excuse yourself and go out in the hallway and cry?

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:01:46 from 71.219.92.128

No, Burt, I waited until I got into the car!

From Burt on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:52:23 from 206.19.214.144

I'm glad you didn't have an episode in front of the kids.

What was this entry about? Oh yeah, great job on your race Joe!
