39F, overcast.  Perfect morning for a runner.

Merry Christmas all.  This was my big Christmas run, the most grueling of the cycle.  8 easy, followed by 14 at GMP.

First 8 @ 7:37 AP.

Last 14 @ 6:53 AP.  Splts were pretty even - 6:54, 6:57, 6:56, 6:46, 6:51, 6:55, 6:56, 6:53, 6:54, 6:53, 6:53, 6:52, 6:52, 6:46.

22 miles total @ 7:09 AP.

Interestingly, this was the first run of this cycle where the limiting factor was my legs, not my lungs.  Even through the last mile it felt aerobically (pretty) comfortable, but I just couldn't seem to propel myself any faster when I tried in the last mile.  This run marks the end of a 74-mile week which is a lot for me, so I am hoping it is tired legs, and that with a good pre-race taper, the dead-leg thing will not be a factor.  I mean, I need to do an extra 12 miles at race pace on top of the 14 I did today!  Still very happy with the run, and even happier that it's done.  I do feel like I'm in shape for 3:05 but with very little room to spare.  Jan 15 should be an interesting day...

Nice! All that mileage would equal tired

legs for sure! Enjoy the rest of the day.

Great run, Merry Christmas Joe!

I'm getting really excited for your race. Sure seems things are lining out to be a great race for for you...!

I know exactly how you feel. In fact, in all my runs recently, even speedowork, I really feel that the limiting factor is my legs. Aerobically I can be doing just fine but my legs get tired and that is where it gets hard.

Rye/Bonnie/IJR - Thanks!

April - interesting, I usually have to slow down (like in a tempo or something) because I am just out of breath. Maybe a tired legs and/or fuel issue..

Woohoo! That is a sweet run! I think with rested legs & race adrenalin/fueling ... you can take that straight to the finish! Nice job, I am excited for you!!

Joe - you are definitely going to smash 3:05 - this run was better than any of my training runs, so I think you will do great.

My legs always go before my aerobic condition, esp. MGP runs since you are running in relative easy zone aerobically. It's all about endurance, strength, energy and the mental toughness to push through (my weakest part.)

From SlowJoe on Tue, Dec 27, 2011 at 11:09:41 from 132.3.53.68

Julie - thanks, I actually recovered well this time which has not always been the case.

JG - thanks, that is what I'm hoping!

dh - I definitely appreciate the vote of confidence from a guy who just threw down a negative-split 3:02, thanks. Maybe next time, I'll do more runs of 22+ miles to get more of that same sensation in the legs. Hopefully I can push through it on race day.
