59F.  Today I did the 8 @ GMP workout that I postponed last week.

8 easy miles were about 7:57/mile.  One one isolated stretch I saw some kind of big cat (3-4 times the size of a large house cat) walking on the road ahead.  Some people have said they've seen cougar/mountain lion-looking animals around here, guess it's true.  Then some deer crossed the road right in front of me and hurdled a barbed wire fence.  One got tangled up a little and had to thrash around to get free.  He looked ok though as he sprinted off.

Next 8 were 6:52 AP (6:59, 6:54, 6:57, 6:56, 6:55, 6:55, 6:53, 6:25).  Popped off a 10K mile to finish it up, aided by some downhill.

7:25 AP for the 16 miles.

I'm usually disappointed with how GMP feels, and today was no exception.  Just means I have work to do I guess.  If I had to guess, I'm probably in 3:10 shape right now so I need another good improvement spurt sometime in the next 15 weeks to kill that last 5 minutes.  I definitely still have a cold, so hopefully that factored into the difficulty (can't blame it on the weather today).

Next weekend I'll run the Tyler half marathon and, taking a page from JG's playbook, will make it a MP run.

That's a solid 8 miles. Keeping them all in the 6s is no easy task. Well done.

Did you get the cougar's number for me?

From flatlander on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 18:00:54 from 75.220.242.19

Joe, good run. One thing that happens to me is that I don't get much faster immediately after the weather turns cool, I just start progressing when I wasn't before. So I think you have enough time to knock off some more minutes. I totally believe it was a cougar, I don't think there are any bobcats in that area.

Another good solid run Joe. I bet you can easily cut off several minutes as the weather gets cooler.

Very solid tempo run. It will feel easier soon. You seem to have a tendency to plateau for a while, then suddenly have an improvement explosion--I bet you will have one of those before January and this pace will start to feel very, very manageable!

Acorn - thanks

Burt - HEY-O!

Flat - I think the same thing happened to me last year, with the delayed benefit. I researched the big cat thing a little and it turns out there are indeed some cougars in the area. Both the cats, and the ones Burt likes that smoke like a chimney and hang out at Guitars and Cadillacs Bar.

IJR - thanks

April - that does seem to be the pattern with me - let's hope for one good explosion soon!

Joe, because you did not do a fall marathon, you never really got a taper, you have had 4 months of high mileage. Take a week to get over the cold & let the leg rest, and you can jump right back in the phitz plan without missing a beat. Overuse injuries creep up on us, rest up before it becomes an injury, you have a big ramp up,ahead of you.

JG - good advice, thanks - you are right that there is probably a cumulative effect of so many higher mileage weeks. I am still a new-ish runner and probably need time to adjust. I think after Sunday, I will do just what you said..
