66F.  Warmish, but pretty good racing weather for this time of year.

I have been looking forward to this race for awhile -- haven't raced in 3 months and wanted to see some progress from all the summer slogging.  Some mile repeats I did a few weeks back told me I'd be really close to breaking 40, but it was cooler when I did those so I had some doubts today.

The course was good in that it was as flat as you can get, and it was USATF Certified.  The bad news was that there were 31 90-degree turns and 4 turns that were closer to 180 degrees; a lot of course crammed into kind of a small space.

So the race started and it's me and red singlet running by ourselves for first.  Like Flatlander has said, we're not terribly fast in Texas.  Anyway, I stayed right behind him for about 4 miles.  He started to gap me in the 5th mile and I pathetically tried to stay close but it was not to be.  I could tell by the way he was thanking the course volunteers all along the way that he had some wind left that I did not.  So he ended up maybe 15-20 seconds ahead.

I should have turned off auto lap on Garmin because they had mile markers and I knew it would measure the course short with all the turns.  But, here are the garmin splits:

6:19, 6:25, 6:31, 6:33, 6:33, 6:27, 0:55.

Measured it at 6.15 miles, but like I said, USATF certified...I can definitely understand a 1% Garmin error with the maze of a course we ran through.

So, I think I'm right on track with the BQ goal.  I still have some improving to do to get there, but not an overwhelming amount.  With a good cycle, I think I'll be where I need to be come January.

finish line pictures...not only did we have to follow the golf cart guy for 40 minutes, he also got in the way of the shot!

Afterwards came the Kids' K

Great race! Sub 40 is no joke.

Great PR on a legit course! Definitely all your hard work is paying off. This has to feel good - congratulations!

Nice Job Joe! I knew you had it in you, those mile repeats you did were crazy fast! Congratulations, hop to join you in the sub 40 club one day soon! :)

I hope running at that smokin pace did not flare up any of the pain issues?

From derhammer on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 17:15:00 from 70.113.125.159

way to go, I knew you had it in you!

Wow! What a great race for you! Even if you still have that ugly shirt! Send me a private message with your address and I will send you a nice running RED SOX t shirt. That alone will help you run faster!

I knew you would bust out that sub-40! Love the pics--I had already checked them out on your wife's facebook! Great job Joe. I'm jealous!

Truly impressive!!! 2nd place overall and 1st in your division is really great. Thanks for the pictures. I didn't know golf carts could go that fast.

From TexasLindsey on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 11:04:21 from 71.153.27.31

Wow! Great job!! You are getting SUPER FAST!

From JG on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 11:55:22 from 71.59.27.33

Btw, nice pic mid stride, did you run most of the race above the curb? :-)

From SlowJoe on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 17:53:39 from 75.109.104.60

ACorn - thanks, kinda relieved to get it

CL - hey, nice to hear from you and thanks!

JG - see you in the club in 6 days!

DH - thanks!

Rye - ugh, I would have to kick my own @$$ if I wore that!

Thanks April - guessing you'll probably hit your first 10k split that fast next weekend!

IJR - I had to pay that guy to show up and clap.

Burt - you know, I usually buy most of my golf carts from him but I might re-think that now

DG - thanks - Harold makes a mean golf cart

Thanks Lindsey

JG - pretty obvious I need lessons from you on the finishing kick!

From Dan on Sun, Sep 25, 2011 at 21:58:12 from 24.209.83.20

Joe! Fantastic race man. Very well done, I think you need a red singlet now as well.

From JG on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 12:40:05 from 71.59.27.33

Thanks for the vote of confidence Joe, but it won't happen in 6 days ... but hopefully late fall or winter. My upcoming weekend races are just devoted to 19.3 miles of marathon pace running ... or maybe a little faster. Oh, and I like a strong finishing kick, but I don't think it would help racing you when you are pulling away in the first mile! Those are awesome consistent splits, I am totally psyched to see you race Houston!

From baldnspicy on Mon, Sep 26, 2011 at 16:56:40 from 72.77.67.247

Fantastic race, Joe! It's a good thing you TX guys aren't too fast or Harold's Golf Carts...er, wait...Cars(?) would have had to give up the pacing job to Harley Davidson. :-)
