AM:  68F, 90%.  7 @ 8:06 AP.  I think my t-shirts can go on vacation until October now.

I put together my running history over the last ~2 years, have a look:

It shows my mileage each month, converted to a weekly number, which makes more sense to me than a monthly amount.  Definitely clears up why my last couple marathons were not great.  At times over the past 2 years, I have been in better shape than the guy who ran 2:58 at Boston in 2013...it just has not come together for me at the right time.

Plan is to run high mileage for the next 6-8 months, continuing what I did last month, run a couple ultras, then a solid January to April marathon training block, and run 2:50-2:55 in a spring 2016 marathon.  If everything goes right and I still run a 3-hour marathon, I will retire to ultras or curling.

PM:  no way on free time today, but I ran the last mile kinda fast this morning...was hoping that would count for something

This is so interesting. Nothing beats miles, I guess. We are always trying to find alternatives, and we should keep trying for variety, but never get too far away from the basic lesson of your graph.

it's FRB reflection day. i love the visual history and i think your mileagejoe plan is the right move (now we've both been validated).

don't get into curling. it's full of liberals.

From Tom Slick on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 08:16:36 from 168.179.158.193

Nice chart. I think I'll try and so something like this.

From Jake K on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 08:27:41 from 159.212.71.17

This chart is equivalent to AT LEAST 2:48 on a flat course. The kind of stuff Al Gore had in mind when he invented computers.

From following you the past couple years (creepily) - I definitely agree that you've been in low 2:50s shape at times, you just haven't caught the right breaks with health/race weather/etc. So hopefully you are due for those things to line up eventually (ie. races not in 99% humidity or ice storms or both!).

From SlowJoe on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 08:30:03 from 107.77.80.117

Flat - ultimately I think mileage is king although you gotta change it up from time to time.

Allie - I love liberals (my entire family). If my plan doesn't work, I will curl and donate $10000 to Bill Maher.

TS - it's helpful to take a step back and figure out what's going on.

Thanks Jake - WWAGD?

I've seen you thrive adding that extra mileage to your already crazy running schedule; I think it's time to go out on a limb and see what I can do before I get too old!

From Andrea on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 08:52:28 from 108.171.130.164

I'd say that running low mileage for a month prior to a marathon isn't the best aaproach :)

How's the high mileage going so far?

From SlowJoe on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 08:55:45 from 12.182.148.249

Andrea, it has taken 8 weeks but I think I'm starting to adjust finally. I don't want to go much higher than this for now, so the idea is that I can run generally pretty easy through the summer and then put in some good speed at the same mileage levels when it's time to train for a marathon.

From Russ on Mon, May 04, 2015 at 18:14:10 from 24.72.196.205

Nice graph. I like charts, especially when there's words or pretty pictures. Yours has both. And mileage.

Love the experiment, will be interesting to see the results from afar. It's the circular reasoning of training: high mileage yields better results, but can the body sustain the high mileage which will yield better results? I'm pretty sure the answer for me is no, but it's an interesting conundrum. Plus that's just a cool word to use.

From SlowJoe on Tue, May 05, 2015 at 07:08:12 from 12.182.148.249

Russ, thanks. The other conundrum (great word) is that the more I run, the earlier I have to wake up. So I get less sleep when I need to be getting more, which lengthens recovery times. So far it seems ok though...doubles help.

From Tom Slick on Tue, May 05, 2015 at 08:56:45 from 168.179.158.193

IT WONT BE LONG AND YOU'LL BE GETTING UP AT 3:15AM TO DO YOUR RUNS. ON THE OTHER HAND YOU'LL HAVE TO GET TO BED BY 8:PM TO GET YOUR SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE, WHICH IS A CONUNDRUM...

From Matt Schreiber on Tue, May 05, 2015 at 21:43:52 from 66.17.112.31

Neat chart Joe. It's really cool (and obviously makes sense) how your HM and 5k PR's came from just plain old consistent mileage.
