Conditions for the race were mid 50s and windy.  I got to the race and the south wind is blowing down every sign or stand they put up.  I'd guesstimate 15-20 mph.  Thankfully, two-thirds of the race was east/west.

Warmed up a couple miles and started near the front.  Not a bad turnout for Abilene, probably a couple hundred people.  Mile 1 I started out in 6th, and worked my way up to 4th by the end of the mile.  Split was 6:14.  Mile 2 I moved into 3rd where I would stay the rest of the race - I just could not catch up to the 2 guys in front, but they were close (10-15 seconds ahead maybe).  Mile 2 split was 6:25.  The last mile was tough.  About halfway through, we hit a wall of wind.  I knew I wouldn't catch up at that point as my legs became silly putty.  Still, Mile 3 was 6:22.  The last bit was tailwind, and I did the 0.13 in 40 seconds (5:06 pace).

Big PR, way better than I thought would be possible.  I might just try and wear flats for the half next weekend if the lower calf/achilles (not sure which it is) soreness goes away.  I'm definitely not used to the shoes yet but getting there.

Totally awesome! Congrats on the PR!! Looking like it'll be a big PR for the 1/2 too!

Sweet! You should be in good shape for your half. Congrats.....

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! That is one heck of an awesome race time. I laugh that you call your legs silly putty AND you run in to the wind and still average a 6:22! AND LOOK AT THAT KICK AT THE END (yes, I am yelling)!!! AMAZING!

Nice job, see, I told you that your speed was way out of my league. You are SUPERMAN! NICE!!!!!

Is that enough explanation points for you to understand just how excited and impressed I am?

From SlowJoe on Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 18:26:01 from 184.79.24.255

Tracy - thanks, I'm definitely looking forward to that half.

Thanks Rye!

Thanks Kelli - I'm excited that you're excited! That last mile I watched my pace go from 6:05 to 6:22 after just 2 minutes or so into that wind but still it was mostly crosswind today, not too bad.

Yeah Joe! Holy cow! You totally just blasted the 20-minute barrier! I am sooo jealous! Send some of the superjoe speed this way! All your training is seriously paying off--I think things are lining up for a BIG pr in Oklahoma!

From flatlander on Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 23:00:50 from 76.31.26.153

This is an incredible time and a great finishing kick. Your flats will pay off big time, I promise. But work into them gradually, I know you are.

Oh My Gosh.....!!!!!! Now you HAVE to change your Blog name to TURBO JOE...!!! This is really cool, all the main guys I've been Blogging with are breaking PR's (Flatlander, Der Hammer, Fast Lindsey, and You)! I think I'm hanging in the right company. Now I can't wait to see how well you do in the Half Marathon next weekend!

Now go celebrate.......:-)

Geez Joe. Great job! I can't even break a 7 minute mile for any of my miles in a 5k. It's a curse.

IJR - stay away from me. I'm cursed.

Man Joe you killed that 5K....awesome race, great job!...Hooah...lol

From SlowJoe on Sun, Mar 13, 2011 at 12:03:49 from 184.79.24.255

Thanks April - I'm trying not to read TOO much into it since it's just a 5K, but it does get me thinking about the possibilities at OKC!

Thanks Flat - I love them, they are 5.4 ounces lighter than my 1140s. My legs seem to be doing fine today so I'm really considering taking them along for 13.1 next Saturday.

IJR - thanks, us Texans gotta stick together. I will celebrate by working all night tonight...booooo!

Burt - thanks, now if I could only run like this guy: http://burt-mccumber.fastrunningblog.com/blog--Time-23-40-8-03-pace-nbsp-new-re/10-30-2008.html Those old posts of yours are gold, pure gold.

PB - thanks man, not Army-strong yet but getting there.

Awesome job in windy conditions. Your training is paying off big time - keep it up!
